I'm sure part of the reason this channel is so popular is because you show the struggle as well as the victories. In the end you always win. But yes, your a victim of your own success and folks need to realize your time is limited. Hang in there buddy.

      Yes Wyatt, I agree 100%
I went thru the same struggle and as a DIYer, I learned ther hard way. I thought I had botched something and was gonna have to replace the ball joints again. That camber adjustment sleeve had me by the gonads. Left the alignment shop and was scared to drive it. LOL

"Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be used" Use them however will get the job done, that's what I do. Guys cut these cup adapters apart, weld them together, stack them - just as long as you know you may run the risk of chowdering up an adapter or creating dangerous less and optimal adapter sandwich. Just give us a call after for a replacement when you shoot one into lower orbit.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  6 лет назад +11

Haha I should send you a picture of all the chowdered up ones I have....errrr I mean custom cups I have. Some of them you can smell the frustration steaming off them still. Did you notice the little adapter rings TTX sent with their ball joints? Could have a ton of different sizes of those for popular ball joints to fit just one bigger cup and cover a multitude of bj's. I am sure you are all ready on that though, or heck for all I know you make them for Mevotech haha

Ever since Eric has been using Astro tools, I've been slowly (as money allows) building a collection. You wouldn't believe how many guys at work have fallen in love with your stuff! As an aircraft mechanic, I abuse them every bit as much as this man does, and the stuff just doesn't break! The 4980 knocked out a 1 3/8" diameter horizontal stab pivot shaft tonight in fact, when a 9x rivet gun couldn't!

I know this might seem a little bad to say this but honestly I'm glad that Eric O tightened the ball joints out of sequence. Why? Because over the last 3 years of watching the SMA channel, I've been very attentive on take Eric O's recommendation on quality replacement parts. He has always highly recommended the ttx ball joints and to think that he might have gotten a defective set right out of the box would have been devastating to me. I also respect Eric O for always being honest in his video creations. He makes mistakes like we all do but unlike others he always comes clean about it. You can actually tell through the video how bad he felt about making that mistake. He actually feels bad BECAUSE he knows we all look up to him for his quality workmanship. Honesty, no mistake or error would cause me to think less of him because no one cares more about his customers than Eric O. For that he has set the gold standard for all of us to strive to achieve. Thank u Eric O.

I like watching your videos, even if I am not going to be working on that type of vehicle. I said it before, and I will say it again. You are too hard on your self! We all make little goofs! It's real easy when you have too much work, and not enough time. Take care of your self, and you make the best videos!!

1st off Mr. O', You did NOT "Screw Up", you were still in the Process of doing the Repair and realized something wasn't correct and reversed it until it was and were MAN enough to show it and not edit it out! (A Screw up would have been if you just kept going and finished the repair that way) But I guess that is what has made you the GREAT Mechanic/Technician you are today, striving for perfection, ALWAYS!
2nd, the "Suppose that's why I have Kids Today" comment, literally had me in TEARS.... Hahahahahahaha!!!!
As Always Mr. O', You Sir have the VERY BEST Channel on RUclips IMHO! THANK YOU!!!!!

Great job Eric......I know how you feel, easy to get a bit stressed when things don't quite go to plan but hey, that's what makes the videos even more interesting. Just after your closing piece to camera I imagined you pressing the stop button & having a right good rant off camera, I'd maybe even throwing a spanner somewhere!
Anyway, great job as always & you keep me entertained whilst I'm out on the road with my job - back in the South Island at the moment, in sunny Nelson. Fly home tonight, easy day tomorrow then away again for the weekend.
Take care. Until next time. Andy

The Brooks hammer is beautiful. I just ordered a 4 pound example. I'm sure the donation to you was very inexpensive and effective advertising. Good job on the F*rd ball joints. They can be a real pain in the ass. You are a good mechanic and an honest guy. If you were anywhere near me, I'd probably cut back a lot on fixing my own cars even though I have a ton of tools and two lifts at home. Stay safe Eric O. :)

Yep. Still burnt out. The Snappy ball joint press is worth every penny. I have also been saving wheel bearing races for years. They have pressed a lot of oddball ball joints and installed a lot of seals. Never throw away a perfect circle.

Great video, and completely understand about the phone calls, it's the same working on small engines people call all the time asking how they can do this or that and explaining to them how to do something over the phone takes time away from working on something your getting paid for, your not getting paid to talk on the phone. Keep up the great video Eric love them.

I appreciate your honesty with things. most would clip out the portion where they made a mistake, but you take it with stride. It's why I still watch the channel. As a suggestion with moving through mistakes though, maybe leave a note at the beginning of the video saying to pay attention because you made a mistake and corrected it, for those who are following along, pausing, and following along again. just in case they follow to that point and then bolt on a tire and drive away :D

For the upper ball joint, you can remove it by unthreading the rod completely from the press then thread it again from the lower ball joint hole. Learned from another youtuber years ago. :D

I remember calling you to let you know that I got the scan tool I won working and I talked lifts with you for a minute. Wasn't even fix my car related, but I still felt bad for taking up your time. Didn't feel bad talking to you when I was there though, you were very hospitable :)

Glad you talked about 'memory steer' . I've been burned by several Moog joints that weren't installed and tightened just so, that had the knuckle just a bit too tight for steering return. Good tip, Eric!

Hey there Eric... At time index 4:23 where you were seeing if the press bolt would run along side, What you actually do is run the press bolt through the hole of the lower ball joint to press in the upper ball joint first.

Ah, the short C clamp when removing/installing a ball joint dilemma..... I almost shot coffee out of my nose when watching this when you said you've dropped the pieces a million times. I did just on one stupid ball joint on my '64 C10 this past weekend. Ah.....colorful metaphors such as Golly, gee and gosh darn. You should teach auto shop. But then we'd have to attend as they may not let you make video's. Thanks for the links for tools you use (and Astro) I may find some tools to get from Astro, such as a longer C clamp perhaps??? HONEY! I updated my list!

Yeah, I don't know how you keep up with owning a small business, having a wife and children and doing all these awesome YT videos. You must be busier than a one-legged man in a three-legged race, but the number of calls you get reflect just how desperate people are for good information and just how bad most of the other shops are. I'm glad I found your channel and sure wished you lived within a few hundred miles of me. I'd gladly make the trip for repairs. Thanks Eric and hang in there bud!! :>)

I don't see that as a mistake, I see that as a well thought out way to show people if you did do it wrong, this is what happens. Am I right or am I right? Because of you, I am going broke buying all these wonderful tools. When I called Astro about ordering some stuff and mentioned SMA, OMG, they are very familiar with you. Thank you so much for being you.

Just found myself yelling at the screen..... Thread the forcing screw through the lower ball joint hole while pressing out the upper it's way easier. Those TTX Terrain Tuff ball joints are bad assed, Only ball joints we've found that stand up to plowing duty on those trucks for more than a couple years. Got some some pushing five years now in a couple trucks that are still as tight as the day they went in.

I still can't figure out why people call you all day. Can they not see you are trying to run a business? If you charged for the phone calls maybe, but you cannot feed your kids giving out free advice. Keep up the good work and thanks for the entertainment. I suspect Mrs O might not have been so happy with your rubber glove how you have children comment. Nearly snorted diet coke out my nose.

I like watching other pros do it after I've done it to see if they're doing it right. Been doing lots of F250 front ends lately. Not a bad gig. They're 2 hours a piece. The slap on ball joint press is amazing. Air hammer them out, press them in.

I made a very similar mistake on the tightening sequence on my truck's Dana 44 when I did ball joints. As soon as you mentioned it was tighter than you liked I knew exactly where you went wrong.
I took it all apart because I was it was steering like garbage

I can honestly say I never made that mistake! But then again I never did ball joints on a truck. Haha! by the way.. i never throw out bearing races and i pull the balls out of timing belt tensioner and idler bearings and i throw those races in the hydraulic press tools bin.. some of them go in the ball joint press box. you never know when one is going to be just right for what you are pressing. i also keep giant flat washers... 1 1/4" ID thru 3" id just a few of each size.. i also use moly graphite wheel bearing grease on my ball joint press threads.. just a little.

Everyone makes mistakes, it's what you do afterwards that matters.
RUclipsrs should not ring you up, they should search/watch your earlier vids for similar vehicle faults.
