    Awesome shop Shawn. We are a hydraulic cylinder repair shop in Australia. We recently modernized our setup but have kept some of the older gear as it’s just heavier and better made. Also make a lot of our own tooling and equipment.
    Appreciate the content. Cheers

    Great video! Shawn, what is the typical grit for polishing and honing rods and tubes? I’ve been looking for ideas on how to build a repair table, this was a big help.

    • @ShawnMcCulloch-pe4yk
      @ShawnMcCulloch-pe4yk Год назад +3

      For polishing rods I recommend 240 grit belt, it should give you a surface finish between 2-8ra which will be suitable for a standard lip rod seal.
      For the hone we use 45 aluminum oxide stones first, then we just use 220 grit sand paper on high rpm slow stroke. Gives use a 8ish ra, if we have a Teflon piston seal we will just run the hone longer with that grit and then switch to Scotch Brite (red) to get a finer finish.

    Could you have Shawn explain how to bleed a hydraulic cylinder? We’ve had a Liebherr 946 “cook” seals repeatedly on the stick cylinder and his explanation of dieseling has me wondering

    • @ShawnMcCulloch-pe4yk
      @ShawnMcCulloch-pe4yk Год назад +5

      Hi, if the seals that come out of the cylinder are chewed up then I would say it would be air in the cylinder. And we can do a video to explain the best way to install and bleed a cylinder for you!
      But, it could be a number of things that can contribute to early failure.
      1. Bad oil, but that would result to many failures. Not just the stick.
      2. Extrusion gaps are out of spec, this would result in the seal looking stretched out. I know liebherr's run high psi so the extrusion gaps are very critical on these cylinders.
      3. In correct Rod surface finish and barrel surface finish. Liebherr's typically have Teflon seals and they would require a finer surface finish 2-4 RA I believe.
      If you would like you can send us your old seals or photos of your old seals that have failed and I could do a visual analysis on them. I would be able to help a lot more with that.
      Let me know and thanks for the comment!
