- In today's video, I continue the preparation towards this new lawn by aerating it with a hollow tine aerator and levelling it with sand!

Ive got one of those cheap aerators but the tubes just clogged up too easily. So instead of buying the one in this video I took a mini disc cutter to it and cut the faces off the tubes. Works like a dream.
That’s a great shout!
How many bags and how big is the area?
Hi again great work all around , we have been following your work results and repeating some of your experience and results.
Since we started found what works and not for us . Similar to your results last year repeating more or less your process and experience
And we wanted to share our experience and results on our lawn and our also doing only one section in the back yard
( some times too well have to mow every 3 days )
* initial preparation a high quality top soil added , using the detacher to prepare and seed as your initial preparation of the back yard
* general drainage was done to make sure this part of the section is well drained
* general Sea weed and fertilizers and etc
* good lawn but also had some patchy areas, like your back bottom yard we do not have a dog yet :)
* some really wet areas despite the drainage all around
* some unwanted grass types - manually removing and reseeding in the wholes
* very often we had to use Iron Phosphate to kill moss which was showing constantly
* collecting all the time the clips from the grass - especially when only small cuts
* We tried to detach again and overseed - did not improve much if not made it worse - as we started from scratch last year we did not have tach just stressed additionally the grass and did not help in the overseed process
* adding fertilizers, sea weed , iron phosphate and other every month , did not improve over all by much just make everything grows faster ( looks a bit greener)
* aeration using a spike drum
* - Very surprisingly for us , we just added a surface vent/surface water collect at the beginning of the pipe on the top side of the drainage and all wet areas disappeared
* Stopped collecting the grass cuts , unless we left the grass over a few days and the cuts a too long. general rule if the cut is longer than an 1inch we collect
* tested the soil to find out that some of the additives we have been adding is making it Acid down to 5.5/6 over 9 Months , so we added Lime to increase the Ph
* and deep core Aeration and adding gypsum Clay braker and the rest of the additives at that time
* Also we did started reseeding with grass more resilient to clay Tall Fescue , we wanted Ray grass and short fescue, but we found that very difficult with the clay and may be one day
* reseeding in small wholes like the core holes is giving us much better result than just using the rake or detacher and surface cover with dirt
Aver all a nice grass is a lot of work , but rewarding
@palmlifeuk3553 thanks for the advise to rent core aerator is a mission and expensive , and our manual ones are clogging all the time
Awesome work, ive got all my bits ready to do! Damn the aerator kills you! Ive never worked so hard doing mine!
Cheers 👍🏻
I dread to think what it must be like aerating a big lawn 😅
Great content as usual mate. It certainly looks like you are doing all the best you can for the lawn. Hope it all comes good for you.
Cheers 👍🏻
Waiting for the next installment in a few weeks time.
You are doing the thing right, with your drainage.
Putting grass seed in the holes helps.
Why would it help to put grass seeds in the holes?
Use the “Garden Lawncare Guys” dark green seed mix. Best I ever used. It’s dwarf rye and Kentucky blue grass mix.
Great video dude
Cheers 👍🏻
I was waiting patiently for this video, this gives me the motivation to renovate my lawn despite the not so good weather,i literally not to long ordered a bulk bag of topsoil, hop to renovate mine this coming weekend
It’s a nightmare trying to time it with the weather. At the moment, if it’s not raining, it’s blowing a gale!
@NoviceGardener I know mate, but the weather looking alot better this weekend,so fingers cross it stays like that
Why are you waiting to overseed? I would have seeded on the top layer then put the sand down. Weather is good enough now.
Was gonna ask the same question!
The seed hasn’t arrived yet. Hoping it arrives this week 🤞
Also applied weed killer! You have to wait for it to wear off before seeding.
If overseed before sand then seed would fall into the holes and then you would waste good seed.
This is literally the exact sort of video I was looking for and you just dropped it lol what are the chances
Get some rubber bike grips in that Swardman. Mine was a nightmare with blisters in my hands until I installed some bike grips ! Back breaking. You did exceptionally well as I did my front yesterday and by back in killing !!
Alternatively, get a roll of handlebar tape (the type for road bikes) and wrap that around. Works brilliantly!
That’s not a bad shout!
So I need some clarification, so far I have cut and scarified my lawn and I am planning to aerate then put the sharp sand down. Do I lay the seed on top of the sand or before I lay sand? Plan to put a thin layer of compost over grass seed if thats right?
Nice video buddy. What type of sand did you use?
Hope this works for you pal 🙏🏻. My lawn is so soggy atm and is also on a bed of clay. Will be interested to see results 👍🏻
Some serious graft in this video. 💪 but it will soon payoff.
Hi mate, great video. Love your channel.
If you’re levelling lawn using 70/30 topsoil. How heavy can you go? I’ve got parts of the grass that are much lower than the edge of the pavement and I want to make it even. Can you smother existing grass with top soil?
Cheers 👍🏻
I wouldn’t go too heavy with 70/30 with it having quite a lot of sand. You can smother the old lawn, but it will likely kill it off and you’ll have to reseed those patches. Could always bring the level up over a few seasons rather than in one go.
@@NoviceGardener absolute legend. Thanks for your thoughts. Will space it out!
What’s the brand/ width of the landscaping rake you were using. Is if recommended?
It’s just from Screwfix (or Toolstation - I forget which). It’s on one of the websites as a landscaping rake. Had it for about 3 years now, brilliant tool 👍🏻
Ive turfed over my soil with a fork, can i add the 70/30 top soil then seed or is that not the right top soil to use
Yep, that should be fine 👍🏻
Hey mate, looking good! How many 25kg bags did you use and whats your sqm? Wanting to do something similar next weekend (12sqm)- weather dependent!!
Nice one 👍🏻
Only about 45sqm. I think I used around 10 bags(ish). You shouldn’t need much for 12sqm. My front lawn is about that and I’m hoping to only use about 3 next week 🤞
How long should you leave between killing off and reseeding? Thanks.
Between 2 and 3 weeks is usually enough
Surely you need to dig out some of that clay soil? Ok the top surface will drain but it's still going to sit on the clay once it's got through that?
I would have thought that sand in clay would turn into a concrete cake?
I have ordered from A1, still waiting for seed to arrive 2 weeks later - have you heard of problems with them?
I think they have moved from Scotland to England
I’ve not heard of any issues. I do know there was something on their website recently about some delays over the Easter period. Everyone must order at a similar time.
I had the same issue,I gave them a call and they posted straight away.
This comment has nothing to do with this video but I wanted to comment on a recent video to get a response lol with your retaining wall what’s the difference with putting the upright timbers behind the wall rather than infront of the wall like you have?
Must have missed that one - sorry about that!
If the posts are behind the sleepers, the pressure from behind the wall will be reliant on the strength of the screws, meaning your posts will be less effective at bearing the weight. With the posts being in front, it means that the pressure from behind is reliant on the posts rather than the screws. Both will do the job, but the posts being at the front results in a stronger wall (especially in the long term).
@@NoviceGardener see I don’t want the uprights at the front of the wall for aesthetic reasons and I would have to get rid of some block paving 🤦🏼♂️ would you recommend getting solid screws and punching a load in and still using uprights at the back?
Would love to get similar 70/30 top dressing but the delivery costs are too costly for me from one of the online companies, and sadly can’t any find a local supplier that does them.
Same! I've got some bags of top soil from Wikes and sand and making my own mix! With a little less sand. 10m² my lawn so £25 for top mix and £25 delivery own mix £15
Agrigem are pretty reasonable for the mix but ordering over 6 bags the delivery charge goes up.
Should have used a garden lute to level the lawn.
thank you for sharing the helpful tips! Awesome work! (do you cooperate with brands to review tools? X-Sense is home safety brand and is very interested in cooperating with you but fail to find your contact method)
I dont think it will work as the clay subsoil needs digging out completely.... probably 8 tonne then replacing with good soil
Is this just sharp sand folks?
@@waynewilloughby7929 cheers for the confirmation, I thought as much.
@@waynewilloughby7929 I've used topsoil with seeds mixed in before but I'll give that a go this year. Cheers
Couldn’t you have hired a petrol aerator for the day?
How much easier would just buying turf and laying it be ????😂😂😂
I came to that realisation recently
Why cook when you get ready meals? Why make a cuppa when you can go cotsa?
It's the enjoyment of doing it.
Also, laying turf will fix it for a year or so. But if he continues to improve the lawn eventually it might be able maintain with minimal intervention compared to this or laying turf
Turf is full of weeds these days. Even the good stuff. With seed you know what you are putting down.
Hes working the soil, that actually has little to do with the actual turf.
