To share another heartbreaking story, when Denzel was awarded the AFI lifetime achievement award, one of the speakers was Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa the Black Panther. Though it was not known at the time, he was noticeably thin due to cancer, but stood to thank Denzel for inspiring a generation of black actors, like himself, and for literally paying for many of their college tuitions… including himself. As Chadwick said, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”

The two lessons to remember from this movies are; 1; What a person is doesn't matter, it is what a person does that matters, THAT is who a person truly is. It doesn't matter what you are; Black, White, Gay, Male, Female or Transgender, all that matters is how you treat others. Herman Boone saw everyone as the same & treated them the same so they in turn saw each other as the same, with the odd exemption. And 2; A battle is never lost until you give up fighting. Gerry Bertier is a perfect example of this, he could have been a victim of that car crash & given up but instead he saw it as a new challenge & became a survivor & an Olympic Gold winner.

Amazing reaction Addie. This is one of my favorite sports movies, it's powerful, sad and the comedic parts hit right when they need to. Denzel Washington commands the screen like few others can.

There still is a lot to overcome. People can be no darn good when they live in ignorance and embrace hate. This is a wonderful story/movie. (And it's shocking that this is your first Denzel film. The Hurricane is another that would probably make you cry. Antwone Fisher as well. The list is crazy long. I would strongly recommend that you continue viewing his work.)

The things they don't talk about. The REAL Coach Herman Boone got fired after players came forward that he had physically assaulted them in practice, the locker room as well as mentally broke their spirit. Also the coaches made sure that there were no racist players on the team prior to the first game.

I grew up in this area - my high school (Loudoun) is mentioned in it. Never understood the strong southern accents. This is the mid-Atlantic region - not the deep south. Those thick accents are few and far between here.

I knew of Denzel Washington from his stint on St. Elsewhere, but didn't really follow his career much after that. This is a great movie. Very emotional too. My younger brother had me watch this when I was visiting him many years ago. I'd never heard of it. Suffice to say I've never forgotten it since. He also exposed me to Saving Private Ryan. Two for two Bro.
