"don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart" I fucking lost it oh my lord and then he couldn't hold his composure because he thought it was hilarious too hahhaha omg
It’s 2023 and this still has to be one of my all time favourite covers. Everything is just perfect from the lose yourself intro to the lion king. It all works so well.
I really love how he lets his accent shine through. I know he is british but as an Australian it really annoys me when I hear british/Australian etc singers put on an american accent in songs. It sounds so much more natural and ‘soulful’ idk how to explain it.
Well, most people actually don't have an accent when they're singing. Unless they have a very noticeable and heavy accent otherwise it often gets "drowned out" so to speak. In short "American" is a very easy and neutral accent to sing in, you just don't have to really think about what words you're saying since "generic American" can often be considered English without an accent, therefore it's also easier to pick up that accent when you aren't a native English speaker.
Paikea Kehlani Most people lose their accents while singing. Dan has a very strong accent and pronounces a lot of his vowels more strongly then others. People like Adele who sound American don’t have as strong of an accent or learned to sing through an ‘American accent’.
I know what you mean - I like when I can hear accents in singing. One very noticeable British accent is Yungblud!!! I love hearing his "fook" and his /f/ sound for his /th/ sounds! I also really appreciate that he says "mate" and "cheers luv for last night" in Ploygraph Eyes.
I literally was JUST saying this on.... shit, whatever video I was watching right before it led me to this one 😂 I said the exact same thing, that I love that he doesn't try to flatten his accent EVER and in fact tries to accentuate it more. It is one of those things you hear when your radio is turned down low but you still hear just that small characteristic and know EXACTLY who's on. 🥰
1:42 - The rest of Bastille is covering Miley Cyrus.....while the one guy on guitar decides to start playing 'I Just Can't Wait To Be King' from the Lion King (1994) 😂
Miley got her start with Disney as a youth, and the child of a star, and her public persona has projected a desire to become a star as soon as possible, I think that’s what it is alluding to
whoa did they just make it into a story between father and daughter cause "Only Dad can judge us" so "don't break his heart, his achy break heart" but "she can't stop and she won't stop." Wow.
Couldn't agree more!! The look he gave was because of the djs( I think it was Greg James) reaction, it was priceless his eyes nearly popped out of his head.
It actually is. They released this song around the time that Miley Cyrus was partying really hard. All of the lyrics are relating back to Billy Ray Cyrus, her dad and older country music star. "Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart, I just don't think he'll understand" is a riff off of Billy Ray's song from the '80s or '90s. Then with the lyrics changed from, "Remember only God can judge us" to "Remember only Dad can judge us". It was a pretty ballsy song to release at the time, bringing attention to the fact that she was doing some dangerous things and she has a father who loves her and would hate to lose her.
..."only dad can judge us(Billy ray Cyrus)"...."don't break his achy breaky heart" ( Billy's hit song) ..."she can't stop, she won't stop" (sorry Billy)... brilliant Bastille, brilliant
This is so freaking fantastic for a bunch of reasons: - quadruple mash-up :D (We can't stop, Lose yourself, I just can't wait to be king, achy breaky heart) - ladadida*DEY* we like to par*TEY* dancing with Mi*LEY* - everyone in line in the *BATH*room, queueing up to get into the *BATH*room - HELL NO 1:04 - the beautiful string entry at 1:31 - that accent - the lead singer's voice in general oml - they corrected the grammar in the lyrics - "remember only dad can judge us" lmao - the change of pronouns in the end is like a subtle nudge at Miley Cyrus?? - they're all silently chuckling at different points - cracking up at 3:07 - cuteness overload at 0:21, 0:53 I didn't really pay attention to Bastille before but damn, that video made me a fan. So creative and talented!
i love how there is actually so many songs in here. There's the background music that sounds like the eminem song? And there's the achy breaky heart bit. I swear to god I even heard a little guitar piece from a lion king song?
They also changed the parts that mention drugs. They say "dancing with Miley" instead of Molly! "Remember only *dad* can judge you" and the bathroom part too, I mean it's probably because of the show but I thought it was pretty funny.
years later and still the best version of this song ever performed. The way they changed it and mashed it and the meaning they are conveying is pure talent overload.
I disagree with those complaining about great artist making cover of a pop singer or whatever else, because the great idea behind R1LL, to me, is exactly reinventing mediocre songs into really good ones, proving that musicians MAKE the actual difference. Bastille can cover everything.
It's not turning a mediocre song into a good one. It's just changing the style. We Can't Stop is a perfectly good pop song and is fun to listen to. I wouldn't put this version on at a party or driving around like I would with the original. But I would guess that you (and most people here) like Bastille better than you like Miley Cyrus, so when you hear a song in Bastille's style you prefer it to Miley Cyrus' style.
BobBoican I am no a Bastille fan, you see. I do not mean to disrespect them, as long as I know them, they are amazing, but I barely know them. I am not familiar with their style. I'm just noticing a difference between attitudes. I largely prefer Bastille's. Then, of course, if yo judge music on easy-listening, Miley surely is. I tried and tried to listen to her performance. she has a good voice, but nothing in it. Simply some people search for something more. It's a personal choice. Id' prefer this version in every situation to the original one.
Can't believe this happened 6 yrs ago! I remember when this vid came out, i watched it so many times! and it was only like two months before my first Bastille concert, it got me so excited! Now I'm gonna see them again this summer, they're actually coming to my hometown and playing at Malakoff Rockfestival in july! Best summer ever!😍
What a fun cover. Changing the lyrics from "only god can judge us" to "only dad can judge us" then later referencing this by using "achey breaky heart" was a clever choice. also clever was the use of the lion king's "just can't wait to be king" as a musical cue to miley cyrus's disney background. tying the song with eminem's 'lose yourself' was a smart way to start.
It's a musical commentary on her life. They were so smart to include all those references into just one cover. Even at the end with SHE can't stop. Brilliant.
Perfectly summed up. Good catch on the Lion King reference. I knew it sounded familiar but couldn't place it. A fun little party song that suddenly turns into a tragic commentary on her antics. This is one of the reasons I like the Live Lounge covers.
Beginning Riff: "Lose Yourself" by Eminem Fills: "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" from the Lion King (The "Disney" Irony) lol End: Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley's Dad) lol Overall Song: We Can't Stop = Amazing Cover!
Still holds up as the best cover/mash-up of all time. Lose Yourself We Can't Stop I Just Can't Wait to be King Achy Breaky Heart all seamlessly connected.
Brilliant composition and performance, but I can't help but feel that his vocals were a bit weak during this track. His transition from head and chest voice into his falsetto is shaky.
I dont often listen to bastille but when i do i appreciate their music, dan smith has a beautiful voice and sharp features which elevates his whole style
anyone notice bastille swapping a word for "dad" ahhaha "only dad can judge ya" ahahh pretty significant considering her dad did judge her hahah #disowningdaughters
whoever thought of combining eminem's lose yourself, bastille, and some good song lyrics. freaking genius. i dont' mind the song now, i actually sorta love it.
Only Bastille is capable of mixing Miley Eminem Billy Ray and even Lion King All the while making it sound amazing and adding their own style. Well done, fellas.
[Verse 1] Red cups and sweaty bodies everywhere Hands in the air like we don’t care Cause we came to have so much fun now Got somebody here, might get some now If you’re not ready to go home Can I get a "hell no"? Cause we gonna go all night Till we see the sunlight, alright [Pre-Chorus] So "la da di da di" We like to party Dancing with molly And doing whatever we want This is our house These are our rules [Chorus] And we can’t stop And we won’t stop Can’t you see it’s we who own the night? Can’t you see it we who 'bout that life? And we can’t stop And we won’t stop We run things, things don’t run we Don’t take nothing from nobody, yeah yeah [Verse 2] To my homegirls here with the big butts Shaking it like we at a strip club Remember, only Dad can judge us Forget the haters cause somebody loves ya And everyone in line in the bathroom Trying to get a line in the bathroom We all so turnt up here Getting turnt up, yeah, yeah [Pre-Chorus] So "la da da di", we like to party Dancing with molly And doing whatever we want This is our house These are our rules [Chorus] And we can’t stop And we won’t stop Can’t you see it’s we who own the night? Can’t you see it we who 'bout that life? And we can’t stop And we won’t stop We run things, things don’t run we Don’t take nothing from nobody [Bridge] Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart I just don't think he'll understand Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart I just don't think he'll understand, oh oh oh Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart I just don't think he'll understand, oh oh oh Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart I just don't think he'll understand [Chorus] And she can't stop And she won't stop Can't you see it's she who owns the night? Can't you see it's she who's 'bout that life? And she can't stop And she won't stop She runs things, things don't run she Don't take nothing from nobody, yeah yeah
I love how the mashups have thematic meaning. Miley has 'lost herself'. At the same time she 'can't wait to be king' (i.e. Inherit and outgrow her father's musical legacy) but her lifestyle means she's breaking his heart. I also love the transition from 'we can't stop' to 'she can't stop' in the lyrics. It represents the transition her fans underwent - from joining in with and thereby facilitating Miley's party girl persona, to abandoning her and watching her self-destructive cycle from afar.
ewandougie Bastille, when covering a song, uses a LOT of different elements. Like, they did a cover a No Scrubs, added together with Angels, with Shine Bright Like Diamond in the chorus. :)
ewandougie It is deliberately. It says Miley is losing herself. the lion king part means that she got well known through disney and achy breaky heart is a song from her father.. I think this makes the song much cooler to listen to if you know the idea behind.
Decade check in ✅
Didn’t realise till I saw this comment.
For a completely meaningless song, Dan kinda had me catching feelings towards the end of it
It's not a meaningless song..
it is like Mega Minx
Lol how is it meaningless? Lol its about partying, enjoying life, and having fun
MeiLinEakin by Dan you mean bastille right?
Nicole Ballon yeah, i hope... :/
it’s a decade and i STILL love this cover, they really don’t know the impact they were making 😭😭
"don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart" I fucking lost it oh my lord and then he couldn't hold his composure because he thought it was hilarious too hahhaha omg

at the beginning the song sounded like Eminem's lose yourself

Nope its 8 mile Imean no talent!!!

The name of the movie is 8 Mile. It's the name of the road in Detroit. Dumbasses.
I like it how this lad doesn't lose his accent when he's singing
I’ve never heard somebody say the word ‘bathroom’ so enthusiastically

Best cover ever
I've only found it recently and can not get enough of it

The way he laughe at the end of ‘his Achy breaky heart’ was absolutely adorable

Achy Breaky Heart is actually a small verse from Billy Ray Cyrus' 1992 hit
I thought it was only god can judge us

Bastille does the best covers. They can take a pop song and make it heartbreaking just by slowing it down and adding emotion.
Jessamine Manchester they can make the shittiest pop songs sound epic. ❤️
Yes! My favorite one is their cover of "No Scrubs" by TLC. The original is just a fun pop song, but somehow Bastille made it sound so beautiful!
Jessamine Manchester Achy breaky heartbreaking?
This isn't really a sad version tho.......
It actually is. They released this song around the time that Miley Cyrus was partying really hard. All of the lyrics are relating back to Billy Ray Cyrus, her dad and older country music star. absolutely
Totally agreed
Listening to the arrangement, I thought I was listening to Eminem's Lose Yourself.
was about to comment exactly the same thing
same 😀😀
+Ian Kevin DAMNIT I came down here to comment "mom's spaghetti".
+Ian Kevin They did it intentionally, implying Miley's 'losing herself' (at least thats my interpretation, I could be wrong)
Cassie Elizabeth I think they saw the opportunity to join the two since they had very similar compositions.
Talent. They took Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and put Miley's lyrics to it. Kinda genius in it's execution.
And so it is if consider the meaning of the songs...
its been nearly 8 years and I still think about this video quite a lot

9 years later and wow im so amazed by this cover. I saw them live a couple weeks ago and now I wished I saw them perform this!? Incredible
I love how they started laughing a little during 'dont break his heart'
This is so freaking fantastic for a bunch of reasons:
- quadruple mash-up :D (We can't stop, Lose yourself, I just can't wait to be king, achy breaky heart)
- ladadida*DEY* we like to par*TEY* dancing with Mi*LEY*
- everyone in line in the *BATH*room, queueing up to get into the *BATH*room
- HELL NO 1:04
- the beautiful string entry at 1:31
- that accent
- the lead singer's voice in general oml
- they corrected the grammar in the lyrics
- "remember only dad can judge us" lmao
- the change of pronouns in the end is like a subtle nudge at Miley Cyrus??
- they're all silently chuckling at different points
- cracking up at 3:07
- cuteness overload at 0:21, 0:53
I didn't really pay attention to Bastille before but damn, that video made me a fan. So creative and talented!
amazing!
plus dan is literal perfection
YES, yes, all the yes. The strings especially are great.
amazing performance but I can't ignore his accent😂😂😂
hilarious :)

"Only dad can judge ya" is fucking genius.

Haha that's what I was thinking, wait, is this a remix with lose yourself? :p
suebidou
Yeah they added a little bit of the background music from lose yourself into the song.
I was thinking both things!
I love the fact that he changed it to try and make it more grammatically correct.
Just noticed this
They also changed the parts that mention drugs. They say "dancing with Miley" instead of Molly! "Remember only *dad* can judge you" and the bathroom part too, I mean it's probably because of the show but I thought it was pretty funny.

It would be hard to sing most of these lines and not laugh
Yeah it is a funny line though.

Aww... so adorable
Bastille's rustic deep voice just suits this song so well. Way better than any other cover or dare I say it, the original.
I love that he appropriates his accent and is not afraid of showing it.
Dan can't even take himself seriously, he was laughing during the "Achy Breaky Heart" part.
He was also laughing at the beginning, at 'Hands in the air..'
This cover is brilliant. Seriously: I think listening to this it's actually good for health.
A decade later and still an incredible cover.

Best live lounge cover ever. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. ❤❤
anyone notice bastille swapping a word for "dad" ahhaha "only dad can judge ya" ahahh pretty significant considering her dad did judge her hahah #disowningdaughters

I think the actual song blushed at the amount of talent that covered it.

Played this for my first dance at my wedding!!
The keys, the talented musicians and his vocals. Miley is proud.
whoever thought of combining eminem's lose yourself, bastille, and some good song lyrics. freaking genius. i dont' mind the song now, i actually sorta love it.

Oh how I love this - 8 years on, I wonder how many times I’ve watched ?!
Only Bastille is capable of mixing
Miley
Eminem
Billy Ray
and even Lion King
All the while making it sound amazing and adding their own style.
Well done, fellas.
I WILL NEVER GET OVER THIS
[Verse 1]
Red cups and sweaty bodies everywhere
Hands in the air like we don’t care
Cause we came to have so much fun now
Got somebody here, might get some now
If you’re not ready to go home
Can I get a "hell no"?
Cause we gonna go all night
Till we see the sunlight, alright
[Pre-Chorus]
So "la da di da di"
We like to party
Dancing with molly
And doing whatever we want
This is our house
These are our rules
[Chorus]
And we can’t stop
And we won’t stop
Can’t you see it’s we who own the night?
Can’t you see it we who 'bout that life?
And we can’t stop
And we won’t stop
We run things, things don’t run we
Don’t take nothing from nobody, yeah yeah
[Verse 2]
To my homegirls here with the big butts
Shaking it like we at a strip club
Remember, only Dad can judge us
Forget the haters cause somebody loves ya
And everyone in line in the bathroom
Trying to get a line in the bathroom
We all so turnt up here
Getting turnt up, yeah, yeah
[Pre-Chorus]
So "la da da di", we like to party
Dancing with molly
And doing whatever we want
This is our house
These are our rules
[Chorus]
And we can’t stop
And we won’t stop
Can’t you see it’s we who own the night?
Can’t you see it we who 'bout that life?
And we can’t stop
And we won’t stop
We run things, things don’t run we
Don’t take nothing from nobody
[Bridge]
Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart
I just don't think he'll understand
Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart
I just don't think he'll understand, oh oh oh
Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart
I just don't think he'll understand, oh oh oh
Don't break his heart, his achy breaky heart
I just don't think he'll understand
[Chorus]
And she can't stop
And she won't stop
Can't you see it's she who owns the night?
Can't you see it's she who's 'bout that life?
And she can't stop
And she won't stop
She runs things, things don't run she
Don't take nothing from nobody, yeah yeah
Who's Molly?

I love how the mashups have thematic meaning. Miley has 'lost herself'. At the same time she 'can't wait to be king' (i.e. Inherit and outgrow her father's musical legacy) but her lifestyle means she's breaking his heart. I also love the transition from 'we can't stop' to 'she can't stop' in the lyrics. It represents the transition her fans underwent - from joining in with and thereby facilitating Miley's party girl persona, to abandoning her and watching her self-destructive cycle from afar.
you're trying to hard
Bastille vocals: GREAT
Eminem background music: GREAT
Lion King: GREAT
Miley song: EWWWW
Still equals awesomeness, though.
I thought it was 'Lose yourself' by Eminem at the start.
Its almost like they used the Riff deliberately
ewandougie They do use the Riff
ewandougie Bastille, when covering a song, uses a LOT of different elements. Like, they did a cover a No Scrubs, added together with Angels, with Shine Bright Like Diamond in the chorus. :)
ewandougie It is deliberately. It says Miley is losing herself. the lion king part means that she got well known through disney and achy breaky heart is a song from her father.. I think this makes the song much cooler to listen to if you know the idea behind.
oh my god YES seriously!
