Osu Street Performers' Festival in October features a reenactment of a oiran - high-ranking courtesans - passing through streets. Three amateurs dressed in full outfit and accompanied by bodyguards and entourage pass through the Osu shopping streets.
Oiran dochu is not a parade of geisha, but of - hence the name - oiran. Oiran were courtesans, geisha were not. They also look very different from each other.

A courtesan is, bluntly said, a prostitute. However, courtesans are not just offering customers sex: their skills are much broader and usually involve the mastering of several forms of art. Courtesans were common in a lot of countries around the globe, but I only know a bit about the oiran of Japan and do not really know anything about the others. The Greek had their hetaere, the Koreans had kisaeng etc.
well said, Oiran is the head courtesan, they were completely different from Geisha
Rex Shim just to clarify, the head of oiran is still the tayu
The geisha are actually just performers, only skilled in song, dance and playing instruments, they dress simplistically, their obi belts are tied at the back and they wear socks. The oiran, specifically the tayu, they dress in colorful kimonos and extravagant hair accessories, their obi belts are tied at the front, their feet are bare and they are skilled in all forms of art, from singing, dancing and playing instruments to ikebana, calligraphy and poetry.
@@AThousandTales You're right! A courtesan is a prostitute. Geisha are not courtesans :D they're performers. Low end geisha establishments before WWI allowed double registered geisha, which is while a geisha is not permitted to sleep with customers or give sexual favors for money - A yujo is. So one half of their day they were geisha- mere performing artists, and then they'd act as yujo to some of their customers. Another term for them is "geigi" which is what the retired geiko Komomo stated.
It's a privilege to see this and thank you to all involved for keeping this alive, soon we will only see this kind of thing on video, only 5 Oiran now how many in 20 years???
I love how they called this Oiran Dochu geisha parade when it is Oiran it has nothing to do with Geisha lol

NOT Geisha. OIRAN
It's oiran/tayū , not geisha.
These arent geisha. These are OIRAN. Oiran are a different profession entirely , a geisha can't be an oiran and an oiran can't be a geisha. These women are just re-enactors. Oiran no longer exist as a profession- and haven't since the taisho era.
I love the costume but they really need to get a professional makeup artist to smooth over the hairline of that wig.
Oiran, not Geisha. Oiran has obi tied in front, and different hair styles and charms. Kimono is also much more elaborate. Also, Geisha are not barefoot. Oiran were part of the Yujyo, along with Tayu.
Was this suppose to be a 'walk' orig? This was just a bunch of elaborately dressed women in wigs with kimono! I thought I would be seeing an Oiran parade/walk, instead I saw... Never mind. It was fortunately less than 4mins in time. Thanx
This is held at OHSU shopping arcaid area in Nagoya city .
