Gorillaz is a virtual band. The main musician Damon and an artist Jamie. The "band" consists of 4 animated members and Damon Albarn is the only permanent musician - they have a lot of guest musicians and contributors. We saw them live and it was so weird because the musicians and band were all shadows behind a screen and the show was performed with a large screen over it that projected clips and almost like a mini movie with musical backing. Very cool but different. The albums and videos are very cool and do follow a couple of specific story lines.

Gorillaz has taken influence on lots of music styles and made them work together, along with the visuals. They band members have even aged and evolved through out the years. This is one of their first videos, as the one for Feel Good Inc., and if you get to see any of their newest videos you'll see that the music will feel different and so will the visuals, but keeping that same good vibe.

i went to a motionless in white concert (one of the heaviest metal concerts i’ve been too) and they played this song before they came on stage and EVERYONE in the crowd was singing this at the top of our lungs, i was surprised to see sooo many metalheads knowing every word to it

The rapper is Del the Funky Homosapien! Absolute legend and also the founder of a west coast group called hieroglyphics that were amazing in the early 90’s and are still releasing stuff! Eminem said they are one of his biggest inspirations. Del did a rap album with his producer dan the automater called Deltron 3030 which has some great tracks with 3030 being one of many and Damon Albarn who is the main guy in the gorillas helped out on that album too!
I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but this was their first single. It came out on the alternative stations (this is what their albums are usually classified as) and it basically exploded overnight. "Rap/Metal" bands like Limp Bizket were really popular then, but Gorillaz was and still is truly unique, and people recognized that right off the bat. It came out when I was in high school and everyone was talking about it no matter what genre of music you liked because almost everyone liked something about the song, whether it was the mellow alternative rock aspect or the rap section, or the mix of the two. People just liked it and they never really stopped liking it.

Remember seeing Blur in a 4 day festival back in 1999 here in Greece (along with others like Placebo, Prodigy, Patty Smith, Garbage, Manowar and many many others). Οne of their most famous songs back then and i think theyr first really succesful song (girls and boys) had the following line in the lyrics "following the herd down to Greece" and i think they were the headliners that day mostly because of that song. I remember a few people in the audiance waiting to hear the word Greece to cheer (well... obviously since the concert was here in Greece) and i remember that when the line came, Damon said "following the herd... down to SPAIN" (emphasizing the word Spain looking at us with wide open eyes) only to get some cold faces from some people in the audiance for a few seconds and laughter from most of the others. One thing that took me by surprise back then was the fact that after this and after they saw that the audiance took this well (it was like an experiment or something) their performance after that was something to remember and it was like watching a hardcode punk band performing the songs the hardest way they could (dissapointing some chicks but pleasing most of us). To be honest, never thought that the singer of that band with those "simple" and easily "digestible" songs back then that seemed to me like some punkheads trapped in a mediocre (sorry about that) band with a commercial image, would later bacome the mastermind behind a brilliant band like Gorillaz.. (sorry for my English)
I was a guitarist for a DC go-go band called Mambo Sauce for a very short period of time. That was my first introduction to Go-go and it was so new & compelling to me. A different machine.

They work with hip-hop producer (one of my favs) Dan the Automator as well as Danger Mouse. They have features such as Del the Funkee Homosapian (Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030), De La Soul, Shaun Ryder, Bobby Womack, Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Mos Def, Vince Staples, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Miho Hatori (Cibbo Matto), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and a ton of other musicians.
The dudes rapping on Feel Good Inc are De La Soul if I'm not mistaken, they do a lot of collaborating with the Gorillaz. Oh and the Gorillaz are always only represented by these cartoon characters. Even live. I'm from DC too, I'm guessing you must be well aware of one of the all-time greatest DC gogo bands, Trouble Funk. TFunk and Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers were my intro to the DC gogo scene, albeit via the DC punk rock scene. Trouble Funk used to bill with bands like the DC punk band Government Issue, in punk-funk billed shows, some of the best times of my life, to go from groovin' to TFunk and then the shift to stage diving and thrashing to GIs lol. @FAQX _ I didn't really know Blur was that big in the UK. Song 2 got a ton of radio play on rock stations in the US, but you're right that other than that they never really gained much traction in the states.
The singer, Damon Albarn, used to be in a band called Blur, which was huge in the UK in the 90s. He wanted to experiment with music more and was interested in hip hop and fusion and the idea of a virtual band. Check out a blur song called Coffee and TV. although they are probably best known for Song 2, as it gets payed at sporting events endlessly ( its the one that goes "Wooooooohoo! ")
One of the coolest things about Gorillaz is that supposedly the drummer is *possessed* by his dearly departed friends who all perished in a drive-by that he survived and when 'he' starts rapping it's not actually him. There's a part in this where Del says, "Ya'll can see me now cause you don't see with your eyes, you perceive with your mind" that throws into sharp relief that what you're seeing and hearing is actually a ghost. Whether they're *rock* or not, that's a hard one to answer. They're sort of all over the place in the best way.

It’s just experimental music there’s no specific genre for this. They’ve come out and stated this themselves,well Dave has. Originally this was just suppose to be a side project so he could me as creative as possible with no limitations and then boom this happened the project blew the fuck up and it became a legendary band in the world of music.
you never see the artists irl as there are only 1/2 people who are on every track- all the musicians are constantly changing which is one of the reasons why people love the band so much- the sound evolves with the people they take on- the original creators of the band are Damon Albarn (part of Blur) and Jamie Hewlett(who made the characters). everyone else is changing, although the characters (eg 2-D) stay the same and are the ones performing on stage- its really cool to see. hope this helped! The Gorillaz came into the scene in 1998. There’s only 2 official members of the band (the singer and the person who created the visuals). The rest of the people are not apart of the band. The Gorillaz are also the only band that all their songs/albums are created by multiple outside musicians creating the songs.

I don't much but I've always liked this song, especially the "finally someone ley me outta my cage" part, but the catchy I'm happy part is infectious as well! You are fun stay chilly!
If you remember or have ever seen the english group Blur and their videoclip for Song 2 (yes that's what it is called) Which was a little later used with scenes from the original Starship Troopers movie.

They’re not a real group. It’s a bunch of musicians and artists collaborating to make a virtual group. It was created by Damon Albarn from Blur (he sings on most tracks) and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. They work with hip-hop producer (one of my favs) Dan the Automator as well as Danger Mouse. They have features such as Del the Funkee Homosapian (Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030), De La Soul, Shaun Ryder, Bobby Womack, Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Mos Def, Vince Staples, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Miho Hatori (Cibbo Matto), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and a ton of other musicians.
The dudes rapping on Feel Good Inc are De La Soul if I'm not mistaken, they do a lot of collaborating with the Gorillaz. Oh and the Gorillaz are always only represented by these cartoon characters. Even live.
I'm from DC too, I'm guessing you must be well aware of one of the all-time greatest DC gogo bands, Trouble Funk. TFunk and Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers were my intro to the DC gogo scene, albeit via the DC punk rock scene. Trouble Funk used to bill with bands like the DC punk band Government Issue, in punk-funk billed shows, some of the best times of my life, to go from groovin' to TFunk and then the shift to stage diving and thrashing to GIs lol. Such amazing shows, those. Anyway, nice reaction vids, keep it up!
Gorillaz is a "project", and while it as a Rock 'n Hip style, it takes from many influences, like Blues, Jazz, Rap, Electro, Groove etc.
Their songs are rarely ever 2 times the same, and each album is very eclectic.
The "band" made up of 4 virtual members, has his own story and each character has a background and personality, its like an ongoing saga from album to album, and its pretty crazy in most cases.

@FAQX _ I didn't really know Blur was that big in the UK. Song 2 got a ton of radio play on rock stations in the US, but you're right that other than that they never really gained much traction in the states.

@FAQX _ Yeah, before Song2, the Parklife slbum was a minor hit in the US, but was huge in the UK.
The singer, Damon Albarn, used to be in a band called Blur, which was huge in the UK in the 90s. He wanted to experiment with music more and was interested in hip hop and fusion and the idea of a virtual band.
Check out a blur song called Coffee and TV. although they are probably best known for Song 2, as it gets payed at sporting events endlessly ( its the one that goes "Wooooooohoo! ")

One of the coolest things about Gorillaz is that supposedly the drummer is *possessed* by his dearly departed friends who all perished in a drive-by that he survived and when 'he' starts rapping it's not actually him.
There's a part in this where Del says, "Ya'll can see me now cause you don't see with your eyes, you perceive with your mind" that throws into sharp relief that what you're seeing and hearing is actually a ghost. Whether they're *rock* or not, that's a hard one to answer. They're sort of all over the place in the best way.
So cool seeing people get into Gorillaz.

This song is definitely Rock. The lead singer Damon Albarn is also the lead singer of the band Blur from the UK. They were pretty big back in the 90's.
It’s just experimental music there’s no specific genre for this. They’ve come out and stated this themselves,well Dave has. Originally this was just suppose to be a side project so he could me as creative as possible with no limitations and then boom this happened the project blew the fuck up and it became a legendary band in the world of music.
you never see the artists irl as there are only 1/2 people who are on every track- all the musicians are constantly changing which is one of the reasons why people love the band so much- the sound evolves with the people they take on- the original creators of the band are Damon Albarn (part of Blur) and Jamie Hewlett(who made the characters). everyone else is changing, although the characters (eg 2-D) stay the same and are the ones performing on stage- its really cool to see. hope this helped!

Look up the awesome video for Stylo. It's got Bruce Willis! Also they brought Bobby Womack out of retirement and gave his late career a second wind. Check out live Gorillaz performances as well to see the actual band and how they do this in concert.

The Gorillaz came into the scene in 1998. There’s only 2 official members of the band (the singer and the person who created the visuals). The rest of the people are not apart of the band. The Gorillaz are also the only band that all their songs/albums are created by multiple outside musicians creating the songs.

Del the Funky Homosapien is Ice Cube’s cousin. He worked with Wu- Tang with their special release album some years ago. I think it was in 2000. Chill funky beats with an old school hip hop vibe. Great tracks. He got me with Mrdopalina

I am about a half a day behind everyone else. Many have already told you that Del The Funky Homosapien was the rapper on this one. What none of them told you was that Del did an interview about his connection to this song. Del is a comic book geek! He recognized the original art for the band as being drawn by the same dude that draws the Tank Girl comics. As for his verses, he said that he wrote them based on a book he had read about writing a hit song. Go figure?!? Around the time that he was recording Deltronic, his buddies were coming up to him in the streets and telling him that he was getting radio play. When he asked what song, they all said Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz! 🌈⭐ The more you know!
