@@BlindSurfer I lost most of my sight 7 years ago just before my 55th birthday and had people from a local charity in the UK which has a mission statement that they “support and empower” people with visual impairment and from my first visit to a social club they ran they seemed to think I couldn’t even find a loo if they didn’t take me. I’d go solo 3 miles across town and find my way into their office and they’d doubt my ability to do the reverse journey 🤷‍♀️
Now I prefer to go for walks through the countryside and villages close to my home, rather than sitting around chatting at their social club to be asked as I’m leaving if I can manage to get home safely. One of these days my sarcasm is going to break loose and I’ll say “no I can’t travel safely I was killed trying to get here and this is my ghost 👻 Boo!”
I use my cane and my walking stick, walking solo, exploring and adding new sections to the routes I walk (because I hate walking a route until I get bored). I’m more nervous when travelling by train when I have to rely on staff assistance to help me catch the correct train than when I pick a new path to follow not knowing where I’ll end up.
My remaining sight is deteriorating and soon I’ll have to rely on voiceover rather than continuing to struggle to read smudged text onscreen. I’m finding that harder to accept than not being able to see my grandson across the table at a family meal. Seeing how you use voiceover to do your work has helped me to realise I need to embrace it as I’ve embraced the need for my mobility aids.
      Thank you Pete.

I am 70 years old. In the last year I have lost most of my vision. I can see big blurs in one eye. I was diagnosed with macular degeneration about 6 years ago. My vision stayed the same until about 2 months year ago. I woke up and could not see out of my right eye. The dr said either an eye stroke or from the degeneration. It didn’t matter to me how, the result was the same. Within a year the other eye just faded away. I am fairly active so this was a challenge. I decided I could either forge through or just wither away. I still get disoriented in stores, but still go. I really enjoy hearing your videos. Plz keep informing people.

This is awesome- Pete! I’ve been hooked on your YT short movies and watch them daily - so inspiring! You’ve been one of my biggest inspirations for losing over 70 lbs of body fat. I needed to be able to exercise, but was so out of shape. I had trouble even keeping my balance enough to walk, but I did it anyway. I started going to our local park everyday and walking for as long as I could. At first, it was slow and painful, but now I’m walking about 2 miles a day and at speeds I didn’t know I could walk - the other day my phone clocked me at walking 5.1 miles per hour. My usual fastest was 2.7, now I average about 3.9 mph. You’ve inspired me to keep going. Thank you so much! I still have more weight to lose but I feel better than I have in over 20 years!

    Amazing and well deserved!
Some people just have that natural determination and belief they can accomplish anything, regardless of their situation.
I unfortunately do not have this trait and have been told I am a failure by my own parents and struggle with life even as a full abled, talented smart person.
Just goes to show how important love and encouragement is as a child and also how debilitating trauma can be.
I am glad he found Josh as a teacher, and that he finally had someone that said yes to him without hesitation to helping him accomplish his dreams.

millions? I can barely get hundreds. Apparently, disabled people overcoming their disabilities to do fun stuff isn't really a hot or searchable topic on RUclips : ) I'm glad you found it though. thanks!

I was just diagnosed with this and I' am so scared I have PTSD and panic in crowds. I have fear of the dark. I have found this by trying to research the condition. The stories make me smile through my tears.

We need ppl like him right now, to inspire and give knowledge that we can push and raise the bar. Ppl judge too quickly...be stubborn and say no, this is what I can do and no one can say otherwise. At least try and maybe, just maybe you can find yourself again. Blind Surfer is AWESOME!

Truly inspirational Pete, I’ve been watching your videos for a while now but just seen the documentary today.
Not that this is comparable to you in any way but I would have minor vision issues specifically with depth perception which has caused issues with cycling, driving and even walking in a straight line some days 😅 so seeing you overcome much worse obstacles is always amazing.

Show my 5 yr old daughter your videos so that she knows the only limits are the ones we set on ourselves. Blindfolded her for 2 hours one day to give her a small idea as to what obstacles a blind person would face. She now wants to start surfing

Obviously not what you have been through but my son was born with one eye severely crossed and pointing up. At 6 months old we made the decision to try a surgery. While it did “fix” it we still have to patch him 4 hours a day to help strengthen those muscles even more. It breaks my heart and gets me fighting mad when I hear him say he can’t do xyz because everyone has told him he can’t do it with his eye sight. I have always told him he can do whatever he wants he will just have to try harder than everyone else to do it. That it just takes time, practice, detection and determination. He will be 7 next month. He has missed out on doing a lot of stuff because he is scared to try. However the other day he said he wants to try baseball again next year. I’m so glad I came across this video. Maybe I can show it to him and let him see just because he struggles and things might be a little harder for him doesn’t mean he can’t. He’s already a very strong willed kid we just have to figure out how to apply that to other things besides not wanting to clean his room or take out the trash 🤣🤣🤣

I just stumbled on this mini movie. Very inspiring even for a seeing person to simply “find a way”. Too often, I feel life gets in the way. I just have to find a way to navigate around that.
Thanks for all the great videos 😎🤙🏼
