Game, just wanted to say that you're an EXCELLENT teacher and the fact that you upload all of this incredible content for free absolutely blows my mind. I hope you never stop, because you are literally my FL Sensei. Thank you so much, from me and the rest of the internet.
Haha when you started with the cake line I was like "Where is he going with this" Nowhere, you went no where haha Still a really good help ! As are all your tutorials. Thank you for all that you do.
Rules: Always put soundgoodizer on the master fader add reverb to every track Put Fruity Distortion on if you want a hard feel Eq your kicks to be the hardest they could be yup, sounds good. But in all seriousness, a good mix does sound really good, but an interesting mix is much more entertaining and gives more feeling to a track. For a hard track, I would make the mix not as equal, almost harsh sounding, to give the track an unbalanced distorted feel. For a smoother track, maybe the whole track have a sidechain effect to it. Make the highs really stand out. Idk, just my thoughts.
OfficialEnman Pretty sure he was being sarcastic.. Never use soundgoodizer, that is the cheesiest plugin I have ever seen. It’s the equivilent of Beats By Dre headphones, except you get a dry/wet choice..
***** Soundgoodizer is a really cheap way of enhancing the sound overall. Here are some professional TIPS I picked up from mixing over the years: ** Mix on monitors (or at least some good monitoring headsets like the krk 8400s). That way you can hear each sound in their truest states without any form of coloration. ** Ensure that all your mix levels are balanced on each sound before you do anything else. Even after making adjustments like equalization and compression, always go back to check those volume levers to make sure the balance is still there. ** Always mix manually with eq and compression only on instruments that's need to sit better in the mix. ** Route your reverbs and delays through send tracks. ** Use less distortion if you wan't your mixes to sound professional on Soundcloud or when they get mastered out *** Simplicity is everything. Do only what's necessary from a technical stand point first and sparingly but creatively enhance with purpose later. ** The tools you use don't matter unless you know how to properly use them (including your DAW, plugins and equipment) ** Create headroom in your mix. This is important to do before mastering out. The master peak levels should be somewhere around -6db on the loudest parts of the song. The more headroom there is, the louder the track will likely be after it is mastered but also ensure that the master peaks at the song's loudest parts aren't below -10db. Most clippers and/or limiters won't have a gain that can go that high in the mastering process. Additionally, its better to turn each individual track down simultaneously rather than turn the master volume down in the mix to create more consistent and accurate db values when monitoring for headroom. ** Most importantly, LISTEN. Stop nodding along to the song and pay close attention to the details of what's happening in your mix. Bumping your head to the track while mixing might be the easiest way to get too attached to the song, making it harder to see things from a birds-eye-view (rather harder to hear the song from a wider perspective). * Side note: A great mix starts with great production. This means ensuring that all sounds are recorded/tracked properly to sound as good as possible and at adequate levels to avoid hitting the red (clipping). If your producing entirely inside the digital domain your already at an advantage. Often times your get sounds that are ready-made (already processed with eq and/or compression) and only require a small amount of additional processing (if any) to sit well in the mix. Its only a matter of carefully choosing the right sounds. A lot of this is common knowledge now but worth sharing nonetheless. Took me 5 years to figure all this out on my own so I'll pass it on to others so it takes them far less time.
"It's kinda like putting frosting on a cake without leaving.... you know.... any space for duhh....." 4:35 Lmao But anyway man, that was really helpful, so thanks... Especially about the Fruity Limiter
Man honestly this video & along with your other videos have really showed me a whole lot. I'm not just commenting to congratulate you on a good video but i want to thank you from a student point of view for sharing your vision & inside experience with your music with us. You inspire me to stand out & be extremely unique with my music; everything ive always had questions for you answered all of them & i want to thank you again for being a great online teacher to me. Hopefully i can use your information & teachings to take my music to the next level .... Thanks man your a great person with a nice soul; keep up the great work man ill always be a fan of your craft & teachings, god bless !
Ya know, I watch alot of tutorials for technical information and usually you get some guy who is talking above peoples' heads or too fast ect. This is how you make a tutorial people-and I just learned something I've needed to get a handle on for along time now-primarily, I couldnt figure out why my vocals never seemed to fit into the mix-I do alot of processing before I lay vocals-so from what I gather youre saying to lay everything and mix raw prior to processing? I dont have access to engineers so i do all of my editing myself which is crazy on time but-it is what it is lol. Thank you for this-i will be subscribing!
Proper tut man, you are telling the truth 100% I used to do just about everything listed as a mistake in this vid. Even in present day me and the limiter battle once the song is done, constantly going back and forth to EQing - then limiting, because of how it sounds. But the tips for people coming into production are very helpful.
great video. I've made some of these mistakes before not taking my mixes so serious as to watch out for things like this. definitely made some good points about clipping and about leaving "headroom" before sending it off to a mastering engineer. I'm taking your advice. thanks for the video.
Both are valid. Just leave enough room for the artist if you plan to have them on a track and don't over mix by squashing your song to death with a limiter.
wow watching this i feel way much better i though i was doing bad job with my music but out of the 5 steps only 1 i was doing. Thanks Game for your awesome tips
It's like putting the frosting on the cake, *before putting in the filling. It is really hard to put the filling in the cake after the frosting is already on there.
if i want to know how to do stuff i always look for your videos cos you are always on the money. i know you dont do mastering videos which i am sure you are capable of but all your fans would love a taste of that cos we dont all wanna be professional just get a decent sound. i personally only do music for my personal satisfaction and am not prepared to spend money on mastering by a producer as i have more needy prorities. thanks for all your videos they definitely are the best and i would recommend them to everyone using digital audio
good advice, thanks very helpful. would I be better off not using compression on tracks and just on the stereo track? also what about maximizer and tape saturation? better on or off separate tracks?
about the part where people put limiters and make a "sausage" kind of song, you can't do that much about it when you produce very hard dubstep -.- i try my best but yeah, still kinda looks like a sasuage
yo my man, i been watching your vids for some time and i love them, i just started making beats....i got a noob question that i cant seem to find an answer to....im not much into making 1 type of beats, im heading into making all....but....selecting the right tempo is my biggest task for some reason, can u shine some light on this? it'd be greatly appreciated
Also don't forget to set your bands on the channels too the nobs are always set to 120hz mids are always set around 1500k and the third nob is always on 8000k you should move each nob on the individual tracks and also on the master track because all your sounds can't share the same frequency
darron woodberry It happened all the time in the 70's and they got great sounding mixes with just 3 band fully parametric EQ, single band analog limiter and compressors and no automation. And only 24 tracks with simple spring analog plate reverb/delay.
Well, let's say starters make probably SOME of these 5 mistakes. Most producers don't make these mistakes let alone all five of them. Apart from that, good tutorial for those who didn't think about these issues yet.
Question 1. When i quantize it never works , the length of the notes or timing is always off so i have to adjust it every time and by that time i lose interest in finishing the project, is there a way of fixing that ? So everything falls in to place or its just the way FL STUDIO is ? 2. When i play notes from my computers keyboard the volume is set to a certain level but when i play it with my keyboard its always higher in volume, how can i set that up so its not so high? 3. Isn't adjusting the volume in each insert the the mixer the same thing as just turning down each sound in where you do your drums and stuff (what ever its called)
To answer your 1st question, try clicking the magnet icon in the top left of your piano roll and select something like 1/4 or 1/8. The bigger the fraction, the less precise your quantizing will be. Also, try using quick quantize in the main drop down of your piano roll.
You've heard of Replay Gain, universal normalization in music streaming and satellite radio; and heavy compression in radio right? The irony here is a super hyped loud track will sound the same volume as a CD made in 1985. In fact the loud track will sound worse with Replay Gain. You give great advice but it is mixers like you that is the reason everything is STILL SO DAMN LOUD.
When I make a piano quieter for example to get rid of the clipping or when I make the head room, my beats loose the feel and don't have as much drive :/ then I try to make drums even quieter than the piano and beat over all is good on the monitor but it is too quiet
Mirko TRAPHIX I just went on FL and figured out everything :P Now my beat sounds very full and professional , magic stuff ... I made it stay perfectly on -8 db at all times and -8db and higher is the head room . Wow I'm amazed with the quality change ;o
I want to have a great pack of plugins for eq-ing, compression, limiting, tapesaturation, maximizing, distortion, reverb etc.. Is Ozone 6 a wise choice? I am really curious what you think.. Thanks for the great videos
jihuiguv gkbikgb they offer a good affordable bundle. Your DAW should come with mixing plugins , I like the stereo imager, limiter, and EQ from izotope
They're both just as good but for different situations really. If a mixer track has multiple instruments, and you want to adjust all of them then use the mixer. If you want to adjust only one channel, or if you might possible add other channels to a track, then you could use the knob instead. Using the mixer it's easier to see where your levels are at though.
EVERY producer makes these mistakes? And the very first thing you start it with is “forgetting to remove the fruity limiter” LOL dude, barely no professional producers use flstudio.. Unless you’re lex luger. And the mix is not about the loudness, the master is.

Knew all this already but great info man!
Could you possibly make a tutorial on baking a cake with frosting please?
NewGenerationSoundz 😂
Knew most of these already but a refresher was needed! Thanks man, wish I knew about your channel sooner, lots of great stuff here!

Damien thomas true
For the limiter, you can just take a template that is totaly empty.
This was very helpful, and makes a lot of sense, thank you!
Proper tut man, you are telling the truth 100% I used to do just about everything listed as a mistake in this vid.
Even in present day me and the limiter battle once the song is done, constantly going back and forth to EQing - then limiting, because of how it sounds.

parametric eq on master channel can also make everything louder but in the end you always have to handle volume levels manually for best results.
Thanks a lot for these tutorials. They have helped me a lot. Keep spreading knowledge.

Whats the best headroom -3 db or - 6 db for EDM?
Both are valid. Just leave enough room for the artist if you plan to have them on a track and don't over mix by squashing your song to death with a limiter.
Thank so much man!

melvin shaw We show these videos at BusyWorksBeats.com for Premium Members
4:33 you made my day with that explanation :P
Man, I really liked this jazz beat you've done to show the second mistake. Do you have the flp of this track?
So for the headroom thing. Do you mean I should always have the volume of my beat below -3 ?
can you make us a tutorial on how you structure the beat on the playlist like how you lay it down
Can you do a video on mastering after vocals have been recorded?
good advice, thanks very helpful. would I be better off not using compression on tracks and just on the stereo track? also what about maximizer and tape saturation? better on or off separate tracks?
Damnnn that jazz track tho !!
I took the limiter off the master, but now my track is clipping [not the individual mixer channels itself, just in the master]. How can I fix this?
Hi, I was just wondering, for headroom could you make a submix for master and turn that down instead of lowering all the knobs individually?
Thanks for the help brother
Where did U get the sounds from U used in this video??? This is dope
Hello, I wanted ask for somethin, how to delete a track from the mixer after have selected it on it?
Just remove all the individual plugins or just move the track to a different mixer :)
George Bennett Thanks ! :)
Thank you, that really helped.
this is very helpful, thank you
Is the piano your using is a sound kit in the first part because let me know if its free to download from.
kontakt
Thanks this just helped me
what about the vst you use. should you not mess with the volume level as well
dope, thanks!
wait why you not producing for top artist in this world? I learned so much from you.
its like putting frosting on the cake before its baked
i laughed too hard when you said the cake comment
RESPECT.
Much appreciated!
can you show us how to make a jazz beat like the one in this video??? please
Great video!
Is this beat complete ?
.... without leaving space for the candles
It's like frosting the cake, but the cake wasn't baked completely. Or something.
about the part where people put limiters and make a "sausage" kind of song, you can't do that much about it when you produce very hard dubstep -.- i try my best but yeah, still kinda looks like a sasuage
Its kinda like putting frosting on the cake and not leaving any room for the cake pan top.
Its like putting frosting on a cake without leaving.. any space for the.. hum.... that didnt make sense.. xD man u just made my day
Frost in a cake what?
frosting on a cake
yo my man, i been watching your vids for some time and i love them, i just started making beats....i got a noob question that i cant seem to find an answer to....im not much into making 1 type of beats, im heading into making all....but....selecting the right tempo is my biggest task for some reason, can u shine some light on this? it'd be greatly appreciated

Hi boss i like the drums could u link me up with some nice drum samples.
Also don't forget to set your bands on the channels too the nobs are always set to 120hz mids are always set around 1500k and the third nob is always on 8000k you should move each nob on the individual tracks and also on the master track because all your sounds can't share the same frequency

about the headroom, so if I'm just a beatmaker and I wanna give the beat to an artist, do I master it to 0 db or below that
had the same question... I play cashmoneyAP and they all hit at 0db
gracias amigo

hey man just wondering what piano you use on most of these videos?
+callmedeno I like Alicia's keys from Kontakt 5 by Native Instruments
Alicias Keys are my absolute favorite piano of all times for natural piano scores.
+jihuiguv gkbikgb FabFilter Plugins are the best choice I made!
I swear I changed the settings on the limiter and it didn't effect the dinamics. It just acted as a limiter not a compressor
Question in fl studio is it better to turn down the volume using the knob on da instruments you using or on the mixer
Works both ways.
They're both just as good but for different situations really. If a mixer track has multiple instruments, and you want to adjust all of them then use the mixer. If you want to adjust only one channel, or if you might possible add other channels to a track, then you could use the knob instead. thankyou
Good Stuff
Lemme peep your soundcloud
I do all these mistakes. -_- Thanks for this.
so basically your saying go by ear how loud the inserts should be the numbers is whats confusing
Lmao, @4:42 bahaha
Good information though.
And all this time I wondered if having the Master's limiter on was the right thing to do... smh
Wow I forgot about fl limiter thanks!
What the hell kind of beat is that
Its like mowing your lawn and...
Dope
that cake analogy tho lol
*It's like putting frosting on a cake*
*Without leaving..*
*Any space for the.. you know.*
*that diden't make sense.*
These comments have me really anticipating the cake analogy
I was not disappointed
Spence Mills 😂
so basically just keep fruity limiter off and make sure the sound stays below headspace got it
4:40 lmao
helpful vid, ty maine
4:34
*EVERY?* Why not just say "most" or "amateur"?
EVERY producer makes these mistakes? And the very first thing you start it with is “forgetting to remove the fruity limiter” LOL dude, barely no professional producers use flstudio.. Unless you’re lex luger. And the mix is not about the loudness, the master is.
very sexy song
My favorite part was when you said master/fader ...NOW that's funny
lmao
What a bullshit, You need the limiter otherwise your project will get to much difference in volume
"A limiter makes your song flat and quieter"
How is this guy having 200k+ subs exactly? xD
Yonabrother, hater spotted...
"that didnt make sense" lmaoo
lolololololololololol i thought i was the only one lololol
@4:42 I was dead.. U had me thinking along with u haha!! good vid tho!!
