I tried several times to update the firmware, and it always would fail and exit DFU mode just as the new firmware installation was completing. Now the LED flashes extremely dimly about once every 2-3 seconds, the unit does not respond to any button pushes at all, and when connected to a computer it disconnects and then reconnects every time the LED flashes, so there is no way to even enter DFU mode any longer.
