    I once kept a sourdough starter. Most people think bread, but I also made sourdough cakes. They were awesome.

    Hi Patrick and Autumn, bait cup lasting a surprisingly long time. Cool, another interesting experiment 🥳
    Yes, that certainly is a large amount of food. Guilt trip maybe 🤣
    Good to see you using your arm after your surgery. Hope the recovery is moving on nicely.
    Have fun, Mark : )

      Serious guilt trip with that feeding!! Thanks for the well wishes for my arm...still recovering slowly, but as expected. My next experiment should be fun in this bin as well...but I'll combine the results all into one video. Thanks so much for watching Mark!!🪱🪱🪱

    A lot of good pointers for outdoor worm bins. I have to get all my castings harvested down in the basement and new bins set up outside, will be using the compost I started a month ago for bedding when it begins to cool down, hopefully just one more turn.
    I was drilling holes in some of the birdhouse gourds I grew last year, each gourd probably had several hundred seeds, so I ground a bunch up for worm chow, worms went right through it.
    Glad to see you're back in action. Stay Well Patrick!!!

    Hmmm... sourdough bread. Yum! I bet the worms are gonna appreciate that 👍🏻

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 месяца назад +1

      That would be great if they do since I go through a lot of sourdough starter discard!! Sourdough bread tastes so good...I just wish it was a health food that helped me lose weight instead of doing the opposite!! I think I remember you adding a doughy pastry mix into one of your bins a little while ago...was that sourdough starter as well??!? Thanks for stopping by to watch AV!!🪱🪱🪱

    I also do sourdough, and the worms seem to love it! I tend to only put the bread in and reserve any discard for my compost tumbler. I dry it out in a sheet and powder it for that. Really seems to kick off some heat there, so I guess the microbes particularly enjoy it. When I don't dry and powder it, it turns into a bit of a mess... Maybe it'll be totally different since you got so many mouths to feed in there! Can't wait to see the next update on that!

      Oh wow, good to know!! I'll have to give that a try in my regular compost! Hopefully when I check on the bin they haven't eaten it all!! Thanks so much for watching Evelyn!!🪱🪱🪱

    Glad to see you’re back in the worm bins. Very nice feeding Patrick. I’m on about 7 months of making sourdough. Started just with flour and water. Never added any discard into worm bin but I have added it to my outdoor compost.

      Very cool!! I guess I cheated by getting some discard from my neighbor! I think there is a lot of overlap in folks with worm bins, sourdough, compost piles, yogurt making and kombucha...what am I missing? 😂 Thanks for dropping by Rick!!🪱🪱🪱

      Yes...as you predicted...never ending cranberries!!! We'll be heading up to Massachusetts to harvest more in Oct, so we'll see if there is any overlap like we see in pumpkin stems!🪱🪱🪱

    Hi Patrick and Autumn, that cup is definitely more resistant than the typical Starbucks cups I use for baiting. With moist food, I'm lucky to get a couple uses out of them. As you know, they leave behind a thin plastic sheet, so they don't compost entirely. I bet the worms are going to love the yeast in that starter and the bread! We are definitely using up our stale pantry items now that we're moving. The latest was some very old popcorn kernels! Did I see some long stringy bits in your bedding?
    ~ Sandra

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 месяца назад +1

      Ya, that cup was surprisingly sturdy for how much recycling jargon it had printed on it! It is meant to hold food & fries so I'm guessing it does have a thin plastic sheet surrounding it. The weakest parts were where I had poked holes in it so the worms & microbes must be getting to it from there. Yep, lots of pantry items after 30+ years in your home!! Are all the worms coming with you? Yep the very edges of my shredder seem to let through some strings...I need to clean it out in that area! Thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

      Ya, I was pretty surprised to see it that intact as well! In October we went up to Massachusetts & helped our daughter-in-law's family pick cranberries...those are the same cranberries from that trip!! Unbelievable how long they last!! Hi Patrick! This is my first summer with worms outside on the shaded patio. I’m nervous!😬. I checked the temps yesterday and the bin was below ambient by several degrees 👍🙏.
      One of my commenters had asked sourdough staeter (not the bread) to her bin and it heated up A LOT. You might want to check in a few times early on to make sure it’s doing ok. ❤

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 месяца назад +1

      Oh wow! Thanks for the heads up on the sourdough starter! As long as your bins are in the shade & are big enough for them to flee to cooler parts of the bins, you'll be in good shape with Red Wigglers or Blue worms. The huge bins I saw in one of your latests videos are perfect!!🪱🪱🪱
