2:03 There's a certain satisfaction when I hear the glass make that clear and loud TING when it cracks. Makes you wonder who came up with this idea to open a bottle of wine this way.
To look through the bottle when you're pouring. Inside the bottle there is sediment floating around, by being able to see it through the bottle you can leave it behind and not pour it out.
If you notice he used kind of a filter when transfering the whine to another bottle, its unlikely any shard will fall, because this process works more like melting than breaking anything, its a clean cut, either way, when transfering the Port if there is any impurity from the cork or even a shard from the glass, it should stay in the filter. This is a legit and safe process
I I know it is cleanly cracked, although that last step I’d do that not only for sediment; but just for my piece of mind to make sure there is no glass. I know my parents wouldn’t drink it if I don’t do that, but what a great trick.
I now Know That the candle is to help you see when the sediment reaces the neck when pouring the bottle so you can leave it in the bottle, Thanks Alexander Armstrong!
Supposedly your supposed to use the light of the candle to look for sediment through the bottle as you are pouring the wine. But since he's using a cheese cloth to catch the sediment it is rather a redundant step.
Amazing trick and super elegant presentation! I need to get a tong like that and a big feather. Do you think this trick can be transferred to other bottles of wine. I am not a port fan but this is a neat party trick, too. But as far as I could see from the video, the candle was not really needed this time.
No. Some people don't filter their wine. You place your bottle between you and the candle as you pour it into the decanter and the light will show sediment gathering at the neck. You are pouring it in a way to not get the sediment in the decanter by trapping it where the neck opens and the candle let's you see it.
it's strange to me that yeast sediment in port is so thoroughly removed while in bottle fermenting beer it's often swished around to incorporate into the beer, or savored at the very end
When tour gonna filter it through a piece of toiletpaper, anywa, you can just as well punch the corck through, and skip on the heated pincers? Anyway im a beer drinker-knuckledragger, what do i know
It's a bit overdone, but hey, rule of cool. Now I'm just trying to decide which is more impressive; this or sabrage. Also, I'd thought one would use the quill end of the feather. Guess not.
1: after using the port tongs please put it away or put it inside a glass of cold water 2: after you successfully cracked the bottle, please wipe it before you pour the wine into the glass. Imagine there’s a crumble of the material of the glass and you drink it.
Yes, let's just taste test this freshly opened bottle of port by pouring a little into a glass without filtering it first to make sure there are no slivers of glass in it from fracturing the bottle neck. ;-)
I can't believe he was that careless to have a taste of the Port before pouring it through the muslin, so many people have had micro shards of glass in their system from stuff like this & using a sword to open a bottle. When are people going to exercise logic?

Outstanding.
0:38 You had me interested with the word "Kit" there Ronan.
Reminds me about Knightrider, and of course "Gucci kit".Very good.
I love the ending. So professional! An inspiration.
Amazing idea, l would never dreamed of something like this. Thanks for sharing! !
This was awesome
Well, I'll be darned. That is just too cool!
why do candle?
it's not really the heated tongs and the feather...it's the candle that did it all!!!!!
show business...

To see the sediments that’s start gathering around the neck
Thank you!
What about shards of glass falling into the bottle? Is this not dangerous???
If you notice he used kind of a filter when transfering the whine to another bottle, its unlikely any shard will fall, because this process works more like melting than breaking anything, its a clean cut, either way, when transfering the Port if there is any impurity from the cork or even a shard from the glass, it should stay in the filter.

awesome well done
That was cool, thank you!!

And the black candle??
I now Know That the candle is to help you see when the sediment reaces the neck when pouring the bottle so you can leave it in the bottle, Thanks Alexander Armstrong!
Because they had run out of white candles
why did you light the candle?
Supposedly your supposed to use the light of the candle to look for sediment through the bottle as you are pouring the wine. But since he's using a cheese cloth to catch the sediment it is rather a redundant step.

Thanks for your explanation for the need of a light source,
Once decanted how long will the port stay good with a glass stopper?
Whats the point of lighting the candle?
It's not just feather. You can clearly see you can not do that without another tool and a heater.
Whats the song?
Mistaa Quick Darude - Sandstorm
The candel ? For what?
Is the candle symbolic?
No. Some people don't filter their wine. You place your bottle between you and the candle as you pour it into the decanter and the light will show sediment gathering at the neck. You are pouring it in a way to not get the sediment in the decanter by trapping it where the neck opens and the candle let's you see it.
What is the song called ? :)
How to open a bottle of Vintage Port with a feather AND metal tongs AND fire.
Bummer when you're banned from using metal tongs.
Does anyone know the name of the intro song?
it's strange to me that yeast sediment in port is so thoroughly removed while in bottle fermenting beer it's often swished around to incorporate into the beer, or savored at the very end
if you are using muslin while decanting bits from the cork shouldn't be a worry..neither candle needed
Achei que ele ia fazer cócegas na garrafa até ela espirrar a rolha, kkkkk
that's the job
Ill be over for a glass of port some evening
Do boy. Just bring a bottle of port, a port tongs and a feather. I'll sort out the glass of iced water.
Seem to have misplaced my port thongs..
Hvad enhver levemand bør vide.

Anyway im a beer drinker-knuckledragger, what do i know
who is to say a tiny piece of glass didn't break into the bottle.
Your Funnel is not fancy.. Sad...
Physics is fun.
It's a bit overdone, but hey, rule of cool. Now I'm just trying to decide which is more impressive; this or sabrage. Also, I'd thought one would use the quill end of the feather. Guess not.
He use the candle to see the sediment remaining in the bottle, and to make sure he's not pouring it into the decanter.
No kidding
Reminds me of and old joke! "Open your Port with a feather?" Oh wait..that's not how it goes. LOL!
You absolutely cannot open a bottle of Vintage Port with a feather - without a black candle.
hahahaha
THIS WAS FUCKING COOL
I have a 1952 Ferreira Port I wanna open but I don't have those tongs....anyone got any???
..meet me at my house hahaha
I'll buy the tongs and meet you there, lol, as long we can make a youtube video about opening it!! 🤓
Those tongs weren't red hot.
He forgot to approach the bottle to the candle while serving.....
candle ?!?!
you mean how to open a bottle of wine with a red hot piece of metal
OK, he didn't open the bottle with a feather. He opened the bottle with a pair of burning hot tongs and ice water. The feather was irrelevant.
How to open a bottle of Port with a feather and some red hot tongs and some ice cold water
The bottle needs to be open on a totally different place, otherwise you are just drinking glass.
it is more "how to open a bottle of port whit cold water and heat"
Please don’t use a plastic funnel
Try something handmade from a craftsman
It says you really care and value the experience
1: after using the port tongs please put it away or put it inside a glass of cold water
2: after you successfully cracked the bottle, please wipe it before you pour the wine into the glass. Imagine there’s a crumble of the material of the glass and you drink it.
tickle the bottle
Microscopic peices of glass in wine and u drink that
No hassle

Специалист
So don't uncork it because cork might crumble into bottle yet I'm going to strain it anyway...ah the bullshit is every where.
Misleading title, port tongs and a furnace also needed!!!!!
Do you even need the candle when you have a dollar tree funnel and some coffee filters?!
Great video, horrible music at the beginning.
This is filtering
I feel unworthy to watch this video.......😉
Scam
Or you could just open the lid?
Am I the only person who likes drinking down the sediment? Seems a waste to filter it out, just consume it with all the delicious liquid!
