It's pretty easy to replace a save battery. I could point you to some credible information if you wanted, as it preserves the game for a long time if you do it. Especially if the battery is 20+ years old, things will die.
I still have the original blue cartridge with my brothers save. He passed when I was 2 and I found the gameboy and learned it was his. He was a squirtle guy. He never finished the game. I set out to complete the Pokédex for him. Last year I finished it for him.

I hadn't named my trainer yet when I looked away to check something on my computer. When I looked back at my GBC, I was looking at the opening scene with a brownish palette, as though I was playing an original Game Boy game.
The battery is used for your save file. Even with a dead battery, the game will play but you wont be able to save. Its common after so long that the batteries go dead. So a common thing, is to remove the old battery, and replace it with a new one. I did that for my Pokemon Silver version.
A sad story: When i played Pokémon crystal I didn’t have suicune because I wasn’t prepared with 3 pokeballs But i got raiko when I was searching ditto👍👍👍 and it was a beast

I'm guessing he could transfer the Pokémon from Crystal to Gold or Silver version, then boot it up onto a Super Game Boy (Because only Gold & Silver are backwards compatible with the original Game Boy), and use a Professor SF/Game Doctor to save backup data on a floppy disk.
Soulless Critter Not officially but if you look around there is a way you can back up the save file to a PC with a third party accessory and then swap the save files on the Virtual Console version.
Funfact: Pokemon was ment to end with the Gen 2 games. Since long term and multi series games weren't all that popular or common back then, so Nentendo went all out with Gold, Sliver, and Crystal.

I was about 10 or 11 I played that game boy for hours, we didn't have back or front lit screens so at night I would have to use a flash light ha ha ! it was so fun though especially when gold, silver and crystal came out. we got to see all our favorite pokemon in color and they actually moved when thrown into battle on crystal version.. the pokemon red and blue games weren't colored so it was all blue or all red.. I remember on summer days riding my bike through the neighborhood with my gameboy and link cable to meet other kids and battle and trade pokemon.. it was so different back then but I wouldn't change anything lol

You can take the cartridges in to certain shops and they will swap the batteries out for you!! It won't recover the save unfortunately, but it'll make the game playable again. Though I'd recommend just getting the 3DS versions since you'll never have to worry about the data on your file getting wiped.

Hey dude, you can change the batteries of your games, you have a margin of more or less 1 minute before the memory gets cleaned in the absense of the battery, which is enough to keep the saved file changing the battery super fast. (anyway check for that time cuz it's something I remember we did with my dad, changing the battery, but I'm not that sure)

Ah yes, back when game cartridges ran on batteries and are Weirdly huge then us just having to download it or buy a very tiny card that has the potential of getting lost or eaten.
After losing my old copy of Crystal years and years ago, I bought copies of Gold and Silver to replace it, since I'd never woned those versions........ somehow, they still work. Probably because they were both unplayed when I bought them, so the batteries hadn't been keeping track of time. What's even more amazing though, is that my copy of Pokemon Blue, which was played a LOT when I was a kid, and even a little since then........ still works. The battery is STILL not dead on that thing, and it's about 22 years old now. WOW.
I remember as a kid when my silver battery died and not knowing what happened, but knowing that I couldn’t save so I stopped playing it. Now I’ve changed my save batteries in all my old games
In Gen 2 I always taught my Typhlosion Flamethrower, Thunder Punch, Earthquake, and a fighting move (forget which one off the top of my head). Typhlosion is such a great Pokémon and has decent coverage in its move pool

You can repair the battery generally easily, you may get told to use soldering but nah some electrical tape works just fine

How did you turn off the clock feature? I think that’s why your game is still working?
I have absolutely no idea how it turned off, but it could be a possibility of why!
You can reset the time by inputting a password and until you play the game again it's does not have the time active
Look for the master password system for the clock, it allows you to turn it off by following a certain process.

Maybe replacing all the batteries in the old cartridges would be a useful video and make good use of them
Hey dude, you can change the batteries of your games, you have a margin of more or less 1 minute before the memory gets cleaned in the absense of the battery, which is enough to keep the saved file changing the battery super fast. (anyway check for that time cuz it's something I remember we did with my dad, changing the battery, but I'm not that sure)

Ah yes, back when game cartridges ran on batteries and are Weirdly huge then us just having to download it or buy a very tiny card that has the potential of getting lost or eaten.

2054: Exploring 60 year old Emerald save!
After losing my old copy of Crystal years and years ago, I bought copies of Gold and Silver to replace it, since I'd never woned those versions........ somehow, they still work. Probably because they were both unplayed when I bought them, so the batteries hadn't been keeping track of time.
What's even more amazing though, is that my copy of Pokemon Blue, which was played a LOT when I was a kid, and even a little since then........ still works. The battery is STILL not dead on that thing, and it's about 22 years old now. WOW.
I actually still have a working copy of Blue and Crystal, it's fun going through it every so often

I remember as a kid when my silver battery died and not knowing what happened, but knowing that I couldn’t save so I stopped playing it. Now I’ve changed my save batteries in all my old games

In Gen 2 I always taught my Typhlosion Flamethrower, Thunder Punch, Earthquake, and a fighting move (forget which one off the top of my head).
Typhlosion is such a great Pokémon and has decent coverage in its move pool
