Ill never forget the counter to this type of headlock that was taught to me by my wrestling coach. I drilled it and thankfully it worked in a scenario with a much bigger opponent in a street situation.
For this exact scenario you drop your level and punch your right arm clear through his legs, getting behind his left leg. As you are dropping you jam you left leg behind his right all while using your body to press him back. He will fall back and you immediately get perpendicular on whichever side works for you...then do what ya gotta do.

The first thing you should try is to get out of the headlock. This is actually a last resort method for when you can get out, but he can't take you down. As the person giving the headlock, your goal is to bring it to the ground and get the other guys back. The guy in the headlock is trying to not be in a headlock.
Also as the guy giving the headlock you should not be using an over hand grip, with your free arm. You should be lo king it is and pulling with your hooked arm because it is stronger and actually under tension. Pulling with you free arm does nothing basically as it doesn't know it's trying to squeeze a dude because it's just hanging around.

Realistic resistance and weight distribution from the attacker..once u got in a headlock of a Person who knows how to tuck his head away and use his shoulders and legs right, you're in a World of trouble.
Not talking about "Normal" guys that don't know what they're doing..but against a Person with say,a basic training and a good perception for weight distribution its quiet questionable. In that case you're better a Judo,BJJ,or traditional Jiu Jitsu practitioner.
Suprisingly Muay Thai has some exceptional throws and holds for stand up fighting too.

Escaping a headlock involves a few key steps:
Stay Calm: Don't panic; keep a clear head to assess the situation.Control the Arm: Use your hands to control the arm that's around your head. This will prevent your opponent from tightening their grip.Lower Your Center of Gravity: Bend your knees and lower your center of gravity to make it harder for your opponent to maintain control.Create Space: Use your free arm to push against your opponent's face or neck, creating space between your head and their body.Rotate Your Body: Turn your body towards the side where your opponent's arm is wrapped around your head.Counterattack: Once you've created enough space, swiftly counterattack by striking or grappling your opponent to regain control of the situation.
Practicing these steps with a partner or under the guidance of a qualified instructor is essential for mastering headlock escapes

Good tip, I say learning how to get out of any type of head locks should be one of the first things a person should learn about fighting. its super important because it's a very common submission move that almost everyone naturally uses in a fight and it is very effective and hard to get out of if you don't have any idea of how to escape it. so you definitely don't wanna fall prey to anyone who uses it on you especially if there really strong because if they put your lights out it's over for you especially in a street fight. And you don't wanna know what your opponent will do to you once your out cold like that, they could pretty much do anything to you at that point because you will be completely unconscious and thats no bueno for you gents.

From that position left arm around the waist, charge toward him to finish the clasp and use your footing to drive or even lift him.

I think most of hopkido is bs. But the arm bar role works great for leverage on the elbow. I've used it to get out of this situation and it actually worked great and I stayed on my feet doing it ( big deal in an Ally fight)This is the only thing I've found the arm bar roll is good for. Getting out of head locks.

I reach around and grab a fistful and squeeze. Don’t punch, crush. Believe me, they let go.

If they have you in a headlock you are basically done specially in a street fight where there are no rules. That’s why it’s called a headlock and not a head hold.

A real fight is nothing like this. Your opponent won't be still, soft, or easy to do moves on. Or even still to grab long enough. Then you have strength, anger, agility, size. Weapons.

And DO NOT go for a "hard dunk" when you take them down - I've seen more than one person knock themselves out *cold* trying to dump someone who had them in a headlock
