Best hour and twenty five minutes I have spent in a long time.....great speaker, great personality, and great stories!!!
Has flown so many fantastic machines and done so many interesting things... yet you could clearly see his biggest passion is air racing. What a cool gentleman
Some people are born with that perfect homeostasis that makes them go on to be driven and successful, and Hoot Gibson is one of those.
Perhaps America's geatest living, practising pilot. This was an absolutely fascinating talk, by a guy of immense talent, charm and humanity. The presentation of both the talk and the video are absolutely first rate, thank you Jarel and Betty Wheaton.
Robert 'Hoot' Gibson is one of the best.
Really enjoy these talks and learn so much.
These folks are really special and deserve our respect.
Some never make it back.
For their bravery and service to our country my thank you is never enough.
Thank You to all that served and are serving now.
Thank you for making these videos!!
I had the honor of escorting Capt. Gibson's wife, Dr Rhea Seddon, when she visited our school in the 1970s. She had been announced to fly on an upcoming Space Shuttle flight. Dr. Seddon had graduated High School there and later that school became a Middle School.
She was patient with our questions and delightful. It was a big deal to so many of us as 13 year olds. I believe a friend of mine worked with Capt Gibson at Southwest Airlines for several years before his retirement. Great guy.
I “know” of somebody who would have TOTALLY LOVED to hear this presentation - Antoine de Saint-Exupery!!!
Wonderfully competent all-rounder. Probably the most experienced aviator alive - I'm saddened that so few people have seen this video.
We owe a lot to the Wheatons for making these adventures available - thank you so much.
Roger from England.
I wish TV channels would regularly have programs like this. In 2020 it is like “enough is enough” of them treating their audiences like people are “challenged” or “slow”. We should celebrate widely what joys humans can produce and be.
Hoot Gibson is really something special..
What a joy of a talk! I caught myself laughing out loud by myself on lockdown and - imagine that! - clapping by myself on lockdown! But Hoot’s sense of humor and humanism was not the “only” things I enjoyed. The Social History, the struggles “against” mechanics, the urge and motivation to push on human experience of its wider environment... gorgeous!
THE VERY BEST EPISODE YET. Thank you.
Coolest dude in the world, period.
Thank you so much for posting these lectures. These talks deserve to be recorded: the history, the people and their stories. Its a shame more people dont watch these and I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate this channel. Again, Thank you
I was excited to hear his Dad worked in airfield management. I did that for 4 years in the Air Force. Fun job.
I would love him to write his biography.
What a guy !!!
Bragging-rights to die for, born into aviation and worked his way to space travel... and yet still a humble and down-to-Earth fellow.
A great presentation from a great Pilot! 👍 Thank you Betty!😃
What a guy!
Such a great talk, thank you so much for sharing all this with us Hoot, it was really a blast!
No way!!! You got Hoot?! Thank you.
He’s doing really well for 73 I’m amazed.. I would’ve guessed he was like 50 something.
Tears!!! Great stuff. Great Americans.
Watching Hoot on the Pylons at Reno was always a privilege. Hope somebody will give him a ride, if he still wants it.
Great video, thanks for posting.
Cindy have some Apollo guys on please. Hurry.
Another absolutely great presentation. Thank you very much for sharing this!
This was one of the best video on the channel. I did not know about anything about air races. The short technical description at P-51 Striga amazed me how over-stressed was the engine.
Hey What a great guy and pilot and astronaut Thanks for this presentation, By the way I am a pylon judge at the reno air races and yes he did fly a tight line to win in reno 2015, Wow Fantastic.
Hoot is one of the nicest real live people ever. Great presentation!
What a wonderful, charismatic speaker! Thank you!
Outstanding!
Wow! Thank you so much, Hoot, for sharing your vast experience for us to enjoy. What an incredible career and life!
Absolutely agree. What totally blows me away is his capacity of memory and the details that he remembers. Amazing man.

All your work is amazing PeninsulaSrsVideos keep updating and keep calling people like Mr Hoot Gibson and the rest of speakers you have already called
Very good episode. Thank you for putting these up. Always worthwhile viewing. 👍
Thanks for sharing his talk. One of my favorite pilots. You don't get much more accomplished than his resume and he still has a ways to go. He deserves to get a flight in an F-16 if he wants.
Really enjoyed this, thank you for your service and sharing your experiences Hoot!
Thank you very much for these presentations. I have watched many of them and enjoyed everyone. You are doing an amazing service to the preservation of history and remembering the sacrifices that men woman made in the service of their country.
A guy I know has flown everything from Mustangs to F35s and he said the Sabre is the best of the bunch to fly, just so balanced and direct on the controls, I guess the computer fly by wire planes just dont have the feel like the older aircraft
My favourite Shuttle,pilot.
Fantastic talk, thanks for upload :-)
Aviation lover 100%
This was an amazing lecture. Thanks for sharing!
1:19:42 Exactly right. NASA management didn't even try.
What an excellent talk.
Awesome!👍
great episode
I meant the X-31.
Can you bring someone to talk about the X-31?
Awesome lecture!
I sat next to Hoot Gibson at dinner one night. I asked him what the best part of being an astronaut was. He said it was lift off, but as the pilot he was so busy that he could not be in the moment. He said the return was really awesome too. To look out the window and see the orange glow of reenty and to witness that something man-made could withstand that heat was awe inspiring. He said the worse thing about being an astronaut was training to death. I also asked him if anyone has had sex in space yet. What was interesting is he took a minute to respond as I could tell he was thinking about his reply. He finally said, "no." He said he was the mission commander with a married couple on his team, but there was no privacy on the space station, so it never happened. He also said there where some women cosmonauts who went up in the sixties. and if anything would have happened, his cosmonaut friends would have said something during their bonding time over drinks.
I would think some missions over North Vietnam, or some night carrier landings in the F-4, or re-entry on that top secret shuttle mission would have been scariest.
Andrew 13579 why would shuttle re-entry be any more difficult or frightening if the mission was to deliver something top secret?
That has absolutely no effect on the mechanics of re-entry.
Wow what a great interview I would really love to meet in person and of course fly with them I remember seeing the air show in Oceania Virginia when he was flying the mig-21 and he put that are playing through the paces God bless her
Hoot your my idol
What fuel do they use in those Merlin engines at 120" MP? Do the use 100 LL in stock military P-51's, and up to what MP? And what did they use in WWII?
A quick Google search shows they use 180 octane fuel at Reno in the Unlimited races. When I was going through A&P school to become an aircraft mechanic I remember them referencing 130 octane purple avgas as being developed during and used in WWII. I don't have any idea how widespread it was during the war. From watching numerous YT videos about German WWII aircraft I know the Germans had much less access to fuels above 100 octane.
I think they had different power ratings and performance parameters based on what fuel they were using. I think they designed them at the time to use a range of octane ratings due to availability of fuel quality being limited depending on a lot of factors. I’m not speaking with any real knowledge, just speculating based on what I DO know.
Can you bring someone to talk about the X-35?
