    Perhaps America's geatest living, practising pilot. This was an absolutely fascinating talk, by a guy of immense talent, charm and humanity. The presentation of both the talk and the video are absolutely first rate, thank you Jarel and Betty Wheaton.

    I had the honor of escorting Capt. Gibson's wife, Dr Rhea Seddon, when she visited our school in the 1970s. She had been announced to fly on an upcoming Space Shuttle flight. Dr. Seddon had graduated High School there and later that school became a Middle School.
    She was patient with our questions and delightful. It was a big deal to so many of us as 13 year olds. I believe a friend of mine worked with Capt Gibson at Southwest Airlines for several years before his retirement. Great guy.

    Wonderfully competent all-rounder. Probably the most experienced aviator alive - I'm saddened that so few people have seen this video.
    We owe a lot to the Wheatons for making these adventures available - thank you so much.

    I wish TV channels would regularly have programs like this. In 2020 it is like “enough is enough” of them treating their audiences like people are “challenged” or “slow”. We should celebrate widely what joys humans can produce and be.

    What a joy of a talk! I caught myself laughing out loud by myself on lockdown and - imagine that! - clapping by myself on lockdown! But Hoot’s sense of humor and humanism was not the “only” things I enjoyed. The Social History, the struggles “against” mechanics, the urge and motivation to push on human experience of its wider environment... gorgeous!

    I sat next to Hoot Gibson at dinner one night. I asked him what the best part of being an astronaut was. He said it was lift off, but as the pilot he was so busy that he could not be in the moment. He said the return was really awesome too. To look out the window and see the orange glow of reenty and to witness that something man-made could withstand that heat was awe inspiring. He said the worse thing about being an astronaut was training to death. I also asked him if anyone has had sex in space yet. What was interesting is he took a minute to respond as I could tell he was thinking about his reply. He finally said, "no." He said he was the mission commander with a married couple on his team, but there was no privacy on the space station, so it never happened. He also said there where some women cosmonauts who went up in the sixties. and if anything would have happened, his cosmonaut friends would have said something during their bonding time over drinks.

    I would think some missions over North Vietnam, or some night carrier landings in the F-4, or re-entry on that top secret shuttle mission would have been scariest.

    • @vtwinbuilder3129
      @vtwinbuilder3129 4 года назад

      Andrew 13579 why would shuttle re-entry be any more difficult or frightening if the mission was to deliver something top secret?
      That has absolutely no effect on the mechanics of re-entry.

    What fuel do they use in those Merlin engines at 120" MP? Do the use 100 LL in stock military P-51's, and up to what MP? And what did they use in WWII?

    • @tscottme
      @tscottme 4 года назад

      A quick Google search shows they use 180 octane fuel at Reno in the Unlimited races. When I was going through A&P school to become an aircraft mechanic I remember them referencing 130 octane purple avgas as being developed during and used in WWII. I don't have any idea how widespread it was during the war. From watching numerous YT videos about German WWII aircraft I know the Germans had much less access to fuels above 100 octane.

    • @vtwinbuilder3129
      @vtwinbuilder3129 4 года назад

      I think they had different power ratings and performance parameters based on what fuel they were using. I think they designed them at the time to use a range of octane ratings due to availability of fuel quality being limited depending on a lot of factors. I’m not speaking with any real knowledge, just speculating based on what I DO know.
