  • After my 5.5-year relationship ended, I'm living the single life in Queretaro, Mexico. Is it safe for a woman alone in Mexico or should I move back to the US?

Today I'm breaking out of my comfort zone and spending a day entirely by myself for the first time since the breakup. This is also my very first completely solo Mexico vlog after making almost 350 videos on this channel. Gulp.
It was really intimidating to go out and record a video by myself, but I braved ahead anyway. First, I got a delicious Mexican breakfast, then I drove to Mercado de las Flores for some pots and plants. After finding my new plant babies homes in my place, I got to working on a new hobby project of mine. Later, I drove to a crochet store for some more yarn, then wrapped it up with some tasty sushi.
So what do you think: Should I move back to the US or stay in Mexico?

Maddie, you are a strong, intelligent person and you would do great in whatever you do, including staying in Mexico and continuing with your own videos. When we first started following Tangerine Travels, my wife used to say that you “have an angel”, in Spanish; “Tiene angel”. This means that you are a charismatic person and will do great, no matter what.

Maddie: so proud of you! It's such a big step to get back into life after a tough breakup, and it takes time. But you're doing it, and inspiring all of us.
It can feel so tempting to return to your old haunts when going through a big life transition. But I hope you will hang tight a little while. We can only go forward, never back. Bless you!

In my experience, making a life changing decision such as moving after a breakup, is best put on the back burner until you settle into yourself. The US is always here for you, but I'm guessing that more life experiences await you there in Queretaro. Filling the empty hole with what you contain inside after a close relationship ends, takes time and is empowering, (no matter where you are). Wishing you well & I love the crafting. Your humor is coming through the mundane, and it is refreshing.

Agree with you Susanne. This is a huge shift in your life Maddie. You will know if and when the time is right to make the next move. I divorced after 34 years of marriage and spent the 1st year doing things on my own and getting to know me. You may be surprised as to what resurfaces. My vote - Settle in and do life for awhile. I think you are an inspiration to many in this chapter of your life and someone needs to hear it.

As an American woman who has lived in Mexico for almost a year, I find Mexico safe and the men much more respectful and helpful. Your Spanish is also better than mine. Also why should your dream be finished because you are alone. It is really easy to make friends with other ex-pats here and you have an advantage in having a car. You know not to go out alone at night and follow your instincts. I loved watching the video from a female point of view. Loved the yarn store, there are no other people doing any knitting or crocheting videos from Mexico in English and I have looked! Just follow your heart and listen to your head. Whatever you decide there are many people keeping you in their thoughts and sending out good vibes.

Also, as someone who did give up on her dreams, be careful if you go back without really wanting to go back-it’s much more likely that you’ll end-up tied down there in one way or another. Besides, you never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities may come your way provided you stay. It’s much more likely that you’ll end up with a life that aligns with your ideals and desires if you live where you want to & pursue what it is you are passionate about, wherever and whatever that is. Ultimately, I can tell you firsthand that regret is a terrible thing.

Yours was one of the sites I watched that gave me the confidence to move to Querétaro at this stage in my life. I am 69 years young and don’t have a support system here, yet. But gradually I am meeting people who I know I can count on in an emergency. I have never felt unsafe, even walking my dog after dark .I also have two cats- and gradually this is beginning to feel like home.

It is so weird feeling to be alone after being coupled up for so long but everything changes, including the weirdness and you'll find yourself, your passions and strength and will learn to enjoy your own company. After my divorce I started traveling the world on my own, including extensive travel in Mexico. I absolutely love it!! I don't say no to traveling with others and sometimes it would be nice to share a spectacular view or moment with a special person but overall I feel so incredibly free to do what I want, when I want, where I want. I so appreciate your vulnerability, breakups really are heart wrenching and head spinning and the fact that you're sharing really does resonate with so many people.

Hey Maddie! I actually really appreciated this video. I live in Querétaro too, and it's nice to see another woman taking about doing just regular everyday things here and what it's like for you. For example, I was thinking about taking up crocheting, but didn't know about that awesome store! Also, I love Mercado de las Flores too! It's just so nice to be inside there. But you're absolutely right, the pots are actually expensive! And I completely empathize on the driving issue. I find driving in Querétaro to be pretty darn confusing sometimes, especially the highways where you have the main road, a road going along beside it, and then many offs and ons, and also roads that go up above and down below. Not to mention people cutting in and doing whatever they want, stopping inside of the roundabouts, etc, etc. So different from the straightforward driving of the Midwest of the USA 😂 Great video. Take your time figuring out your next steps, don't rush! It will come to you.

@@susanaramirez1335 I agree it would be nice to know more women in the area. But I didn't want to be creepy or anything! I'm also in a bit of a different chapter of my life, I have a 3 month old baby and getting the hang of being a new mom. But I would for sure be open to the idea. Especially if she ever needed anything while she's here. I (along with my husband who knows more people in Mexico) would always be open to meeting and/or helping with anything.

By the way, the simple day to day things that you are including (like you crocheting) makes living in Mexico more relatable. Like knowing that there are very real ways an American can fit in and adapt. I like that you are sharing the down to earth activities you are dealing with. Living situations, shopping, cooking, cleaning, being lonely, even fears, and how to find help, churches, counseling, schools, libraries. All the things of real day to day life. Travel is nice but most don’t travel all the time so the nitty are gritty is helpful and refreshing.

Maddie, I completely enjoyed your video! You have such a soothing voice and you’re a pro at filming (even when you’re dropping sushi)! I think you’re very happy in Mexico, but your emotions are all over the place due to the breakup. Wait a while, don’t make any big decisions now. I’ve read that when one goes through a trauma (such as death, breakup, etc.), you should wait a good while before big decisions, I know you don’t want to be lonely, I understand, but give yourself time to adjust. Also, when you’re filming, be aware of your surroundings. I notice that you love the camera (and it loves you) but don’t let it keep you from being cognizant of what’s around you. You are so much better than you think you are. I’ll be honest and say that I really like that you can talk freely without being interrupted and you can express your own opinions more freely. Just give it time before deciding anything, keep your chin up and you’ll be fine. You’re a lovely and charming young woman; you can do anything you set your mind to. Best wishes!!!

I have been watching your videos for a while now. I have always been impressed with how take charge and independent you are even within your relationship. You always came across to me as being fearless. You moved to Mexico, drove around the country and along the way fearlessly opened up and shared many things others would not have had the courage to share. After so many years doing things together you need practice being single. You should stay or go depending on what you want, but make the decision from strength. I have complete confidence you will be fine regardless of where you end up.

Great job Maddie! It is not easy being single anywhere when you haven't been so for many years. Give yourself a minimum of six months before making any decisions to move. Keep pushing yourself to go out like you did in this video and it will get easier. Maybe join a class or activity of some kind to give you the opportunity to meet new people. I enjoyed seeing the plants you chose and the pots. I also enjoyed seeing the yarn store (I would go crazy in there too 😉). It is nice to see the different types of stores and the prices. All I can say is keep it up, I will be supporting you!

Hi Maddie, Yes no one seems to understand why after 34 yrs with my best friend, I find it difficult to venture into the world solo. You are really doing great my friend. Don't go back. You have us to bounce ideas off of and I do believe as so many others do here that you can start a single women's touring group or teach english, etc. So many possibilities...I KNOW it's hard, keep moving forward one step at a time. Maddie…I love that you’ve included us in your new life. You are so precious and I love that you are taking us on this journey with you. I think you should remain where you are in Mexico but please find an expat group to align with. Hopefully you will find your “new tribe” to give you the social outlet you need. You are absolutely adorable and I think there are expats who would “line up” to have you as a part of their group. This will give you the feeling of connectedness you’ll need as you settle into your new reality. Love the crafts but want to encourage you to not let that become your escape. You are beautiful…young and free to design whatever reality you wish. Do not settle for anything/anyone who does not share your vision. Warmest wishes and loads of hugs to you…Carol

I agree, that's what I was going to suggest, enroll in a short course in the local university, or take lessons of something, perhaps teach english in a school so you begin to meet new people. I suggest checking out Berlitz language schools, I used to teach there and you meet a lot of other expats and students. It's a very nice environment.
Also, it would be better if you don't visit certain areas if you're by yourself, and I'd remove the jewelry if I'm out by myself. I'm Mexican and used to live in Mexico, I left because of the social problems which, you are right, are not so bad in Queretaro, but stil...
Looking forward to more videos, although I have to admit the videos I like the most are those with the two of you, it's a good dynamic you guys have together as presenters of the local culture.

Girl, enjoy your single days by yourself! I am 32 and most of my adult life I have been myself. It wasn't always easy, there was a period of time( like many women) where it felt lonely and wanted a male companion, to do things with.
I am now at a place in my life and have made several poor choices in men, the last thing I want is a relationship. I love going out to eat, shopping, errands by myself. The thought of bringing someone else into my lifestyle at this point truly doesn't seem desireable. ONe day, yes. For now, I'm enjoying being me.
I am considering traveling around Mexico next summer, I already went to Mexico city by myself for Spring break. This channel motivated me to want to go back and travel more.

I went from living at home, to a three year army enlistment, to a five year marriage. At age 28, the marriage ended. I had never lived alone before that. I will never forget that first time, sitting down to dinner at a restaurant, truly alone for the first time in my life. It was such a deeply strange, sad, disorienting feeling. I didn't know what to do with myself. I felt numb, life was in black and white. But you know what? Now, I wouldn’t change that experience for anything. Over the next couple of years I had more personal growth and learned more about myself, other people and the world than I ever would have otherwise. I have now traveled solo to 35 countries, and I can hardly express how rich, powerful and rewarding the experiences have been. Of course you must make your own decisions, but there is truly something to be said for continuing your life in Mexico. All the best to you!

As a woman who’s been solo almost a year now, I totally understand how you’re feeling! I live in the US and I hated doing things by myself at first even though things are made very convenient here. You’ve been in Mexico a long time! If you decide to stay, I’m sure you’ll continue to gain confidence… but if you go back, I would completely get it. You’ve got my support either way! If you’d like a change of scenery in the US, feel free to look me up in Florida. There are endless opportunities here!

I think loneliness and overthinking has no borders. Wherever I go I take me with me. I entered and have lived in Mexico as a single woman for almost 8 years and have watched the safety the the states decline so rapidly that I feel that the USA can not any longer provide me better security than Mexico can at this time. Location means everything and both countries have bad places to live for single woman, and fantastic safe places too. I am back in the US for medical reasons now and I can honestly say that the low moments feel exactly as low here as they do there. It’s simply up to me to change my attitude and improvements will instantly happen. Slowly but surely. I just need to find my passion again. That’s the key for me. Might not be in the U.S. and maybe not even Mexico again. I’m not sure at this moment. Time will tell.

Wanda and Sue are absolutely right! This break up is a wonderful opportunity for you to grow and find out who you are on your own. You can always go back to what you know, but there are so many wonderful adventures and learning experiences ahead of you if you stay. I have lived as a single woman in Puerto Vallarta and Ajijic for 17 years. I've travelled by car around other parts of Mexico, sometimes alone, sometimes with a companion. And, I've always been safe, even after running out of gas or experiencing a mechanical problem. I've always felt safe. People are very helpful here. I also have many single women friends of all ages who live here in Mexico. If you love Mexico, stay and grow and learn more about it and about yourself. You can always go back. But, be where your heart is.
