I can't stand how LGBT movies are almost never allowed to have a happy ending. It shows how society at large views us, like a caricature of pitiable "others" who are destined to live less fulfilling and tragic lives. Essentially it's heteronormative society saying it doesn't want to see us on screen unless it's to see how we are mistreated by them.
@@LangkeeLongkee no lgbt media is almost always white centric. Whenever theres a lgbt character of colour their love interest is white. Meanwhile there are plenty of non interracial white couples.
@@dominodomino1853 but... you realise that white people arent the only other race right??? You know many many different types of Asians exist right?? And indigenous women. And Arabic/Israeli/Desi women... They exist and sometimes date black women too... you DO know that right? You can have interracial wlw relationships that dont involve white women still...
@@LangkeeLongkee i think you’re reading it all wrong. that was never the intent of my comment. i said that because when it comes to lesbian relationships in the media there is almost ALWAYS a white woman involved. i hardly ever see two black women in a wlw relationship that is represented at all-unless it’s two side characters who barely get any screen time. don’t get me wrong, i’m not bashing interracial couples at all. ALL wlw relationships are beautiful and valid just as they are, regardless of race, and i have no problem with it. i just get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. the media constantly makes it seem like black wlw relationships don’t exist and they keep whitewashing lesbianism. if you go ANYWHERE (especially on social media) and search “lesbian” you have to dig and dig and DIG to find black lesbians. as i said before i have no problem with it, because wlw representation means so much, but you can’t just represent one side of lesbianism and completely disregard another side. i want a main story, where black women fall in love with each other, like a normal wlw relationship. i want the story to follow them and their traumas, the same way happiest season did, the same way bly manor did. i don’t want them to just showcase them in love for a couple of seconds like every show or movie or book does. i want their story too, because not everyone grows up in the same community, and as a black woman i know how hard it is to be LGBTQ+ in the black community. just a different perspective would be nice.
Honestly there's such a pervasive WHITENESS to movies for gay people in general? Like we got 2 different gay romcoms for the holiday and both had only white men at the center. I need casting directors and writers to realize that having one white lead with curly hair & one with straight or having white leads of different hair colors does not diversity make.
It's like a character has to be white, thin, conventionally attractive etc. to "make up" for the fact that they are LGBT+. The white cishets will just implode if a character portrays two or more identities that are marginalized.
@@chatnoir9038 seeing how they ripped and screamed at moonlight its safe to say they aren't ready. At this point its time been time to create other stories that they just won't get and the cis white hets just gonna have to get over it.
I'm just tired of the movies where the studs fall for the straight best friend and ultimately gets her heart broken. I want more movies with Black studs or POC that aren't crazy, toxic abusive into the streets.
UGHHHHH THANK YOU!! that's so real life too!! Im gay n a stud. Well the rumors at work states that I like her. WTF!! That hurts cause, first off, I dont!! I didn't kno, when u buy ur coworker lunch n here n there to help very strong hard working mom to give her a break.. would mean i like her!! Her schedule is very hectic n doesn't eat all day. 1st time eating of the day is at 8pm n she eats a cup of noodles soup. I can't let that happen. I can't and I won't. Her and I, felt comfortable enough to tell eachothers drama n problems. As coworkers we gotten close n more close cause I'd drop her home. Yes, her husband could of pick her up but I kno he needed his sleep. N when hubby picks her up, he brings thier 2 daughters with him.. meaning he has to wake em up like at midnight n ready to get to work by 1am. When I found that out. I just couldn't. So I told her, hey let your kids sleep.. and ill take you home n never even worry bout gas. Especially when the girls have school in the morning. When I do things, I do it all in the kindness of my heart n I never ask for gas money, ever. I don't expect anything in return!! I completely understand where they are coming cause that was me n my siblings. I get it . Before I had cut her off, everybody at work got into her head that I like her. damn, that hurts. Im being helpful in ways I can possibly help. I didn't ask her , I told her. Allow me to take you home n let your precious gems sleep (thats what she girls her girls). I'd give a hand to anyone and anybody. Im still hurt. Its like that quote "having a good heart, can put you in fucked up situation"
Yes. Fuck. PLEASE. Can we have trans stories played by trans people that aren't just tragedy-porn for cishet entertainment? Can we have trans stories that aren't just about our genitals? Can we be people please?
There's a Brazilian film in Netflix, called Alice Junior, about a teen transgirl, and is supposed to be a romantic comedy(I haven't seen it though, so I don't know if it's good)
When I was 13 I bought a box set of Almodóvar's movies because they where in the art section and looked cool. I didn't read the description or anything. I watched a couple of movies about transexual women involved in sex work and lots of tragedy. Ever since I associate trans people with sadness and tragedy. I have since then watched a lot of trans people's channel's here in RUclips and it made me happy to realize that trans people lead healthy lives not a Greek tragedy.
I’m ready for big budget projects to discuss non-binary identities. Even small scale. Right now I’d die to see a character introduce their best friend to their family saying “hey, before skyler comes over I want you to know they use they/them pronouns” 2021: the year to stop caring if straight people understand.
you can't ignore the fact that if the movie i sbig budget then it also has to appeal to more than just the LGBT community . if a movie costs more thn 100 millions to make , foreign audiences will also be targeted , straight , foreign audiences .and that's where the issue lies . i don't know if you heard about that guy who attacked the netflix studio in Turkey because of a rumor that some turkish netflix show would have a gay character .allegedly ( not even confirmed) ,people literally got their forks and torches out, netflix had to cancel. without the international audience, a big budget LGBT movie has little chance of being made in Hollyood , wether the studio/director is pro lgbt or not
@@deadchannel7987 yes! Once I got past the first couple of episodes, I was able to follow it better. The storyline was hard to follow and it seemed like so many characters were introduced all at once in the beginning. I'm good now though😂
YES! Your quote about having space for content moving forward that straight people won’t necessarily understand reminds me of something I saw in passing on Twitter. Someone wrote that they missed the days when black content wasn’t made aiming to explain black culture to white people. Same energy. We can/should exist without always having to cater to/appeal to/explain ourselves to another audience. It’s not about exclusivity, but representation. I think this is one of the clearest explanations on the idea of representation I’ve seen in a while.
studios need to make money , and to make money with a movie one needs foreign audiences . and foreign audiences will not accept these movies(think Russia, think China , think Africa+ middle east ) . back in the 90's things were not as bad because movies didn't need LOADS of money to be made like now . tons of great LGBT movies were made back then and were a worldwide success . Nowadays however , movies are not original anymore ( only high budget remakes, superhero movies, ect are being made
I’m white just to explain my perspective, but you can still understand the point of the movie even if you don’t understand/can’t relate to some of the actions the character takes in everyday life. But you still get the point of the movie, so they should really stop making shows explaining blackness bc you can see it in proper shows. The same applies with LGBTQ+ films.
I hate it when the only LGBTQ representation is stereotypes, so I agree with your opinion on her! Also, I don’t want to be annoying but I’m trying to help a black-owned film production business. They’ve won lots of awards for their short films. If you’re at all interested in watching their short films on RUclips, they’re called Fokus Firm. Here’s a link if you wanna surprise or look at their short films. One is about racism (called Allergies) and is SO GOOD!!! m.ruclips.net/user/FokusFirm
The people that dislike this video probably think “ Room in Rome” or “ Blue is the Warmest Color” were probably the best LGBTQ+ movie they’ve ever seen smh . 🤦🏽♂️
My wife and I are always a little bummed that movies are never about the story line & the main characters just happen to be gay.... Its normally that the story line IS that they are non hetero. They can’t just have a healthy relationship, it’s always a hidden love affair, someone is married & unhappy so they basically “choose to be” non hetero as some sort of back up deal. 🤦🏻♀️🙄 Can we get a solid movie, with non hetero characters, that isn’t written strictly for hetero people, ANDDDD the characters sexual identity is not the whole plot of the movie. lol! Of course I am so grateful to see that there’s at least attempts at inclusivity being made, but there’s a LONG way to go with acknowledging the characters ethnicity, religion, region, outside of their sexual identity. I hope that made since. I’m not doing great “wording” today. lol! Jade really nailed this whole video right on the head with her critiques & offered alternative twist! She worded it exponentially better than I did though! 🤣
Agree. I mean I was married to a man before I came out as a lesbian at 26/27. And I'm over the coming out stories. When I met my gf i was not closeted and confused. I was out and confident and I would never want the rest of my life to centre on the first few traumatic years of my 20s
Star Trek Discovery has openly gay doctor and his engineering husband, along with a non-binary supporting actor in the later series. If you're into sci-fi it's really well done and the diversity is spot on IMO (plus the doc and his husband make a great couple). I was somewhat shocked with She-Ra remake though.. It seemed that every almost every main character was non-hetro, and this series is aimed at young kids?? I put it on for my daughter (remembering the old He-Man and She-Ra series), and couldn't get over the overtones, it was too much after a while. Don't get me wrong, I've got several friends who are bi, gay or have undergone gender reassignment surgery & totally support theirs and any other person's lifestyle choice in that regard. For a cartoon series aimed squarely at young kids though, I think it seriously skewed the real-world demographics in favour for some "inclusiveness" tick-in-the-box and was to the point where it I felt it was almost pushed in your face throughout the last season especially. Toned down and handled like ST: Discovery, it'd have been gold (at least for me).
@@TomTom-tp3qc you seem well-intentioned, so i'm not chewing you out lol, but i'm just curious ab why you consider cishet characters and storylines more kid-friendly than lgbtqa+ ones? a lot of lgbtqa+ kids exist and would love to see themselves represented on-screen; they shouldn't have to wait a decade or more to get that, and only be exposed to cishet media until then. the idea that lgbtqa+ media is inherently 18+ is unfortunately very ingrained - i'd urge you to examine your logic here.
@@sorchalenagh2260 Oh I'm not saying don't have it on screen, I'm just saying that the way it was portrayed made it look like it was the only choice. Whereas ST: Discovery (not 18+ at all - rated TV-14) came across as more inclusive, in a more natural way (as opposed to an almost mirror opposite demographic portrayed in She-Ra) which seems it got a bit carried away with the theme to the point where the characters sexuality and dealing with relationships kinda made the narrative less focussed on battling and overcoming oppression and the forces of evil, and more about who loves who and the ups and downs of their relationships.
@@sorchalenagh2260 I agree with both you and Little Tom. There's nothing wrong with lgbtq+ characters in a kid's show, but I do believe that the mainstream media doesn't showcase representation for the right reasons most of the time. I just feel like sometimes whether it's a show or movie, they just make everything lgbtq+ because it's like a trend and makes them seem "inclusive". It doesn't seem real, and it's like their sexuality is used as a crutch and too "in your face" instead of putting any depth or soul into the character. It just seems fake. That's always been a little bit offensive to me. Like some other commenters said, there are a few shows and things with good representation, but there are so few.
When you said : "I am that demographic that this movie is for", it rang a bell. Cause I feel like this is where we're maybe wrong. Happiest Season felt to me like it was made for a straight audience, in the sense that it was made to be appreciated and liked mainly by straight people. Any thoughts?
Exactly what I thought. I mean I watched about 25 min of the movie and I couldn't continue cos I felt like I was wasting my time. It was weird, it was unfunny, the main character being in the closet as the primary theme of the movie, really? In 2021? I don't think they expected us LGBT+ community to find it funny as we struggle with it our whole lives and we also make jokes about it our whole lives. But ours are funny. Theirs aren't. The jokes, the plot and the characters weren't made for our appreciation. It's for straight audiences, so that they can feel nice and comfy, so they can then go and tell us "BUT THERE IS LGBT REPRESENTATION!!!1", so they can think they know LGBT+ people but simultaneously not feel threatened by anything new or unfamiliar.
I agree. There need to be more LGBT+ movies that tell different stories and don’t cater to straight cis white people. They have to make people think. (E.g. I recommend Moonlight).
It was like even the directors and producers sadly went, straight people (the majority who make movies money) sadly won't watch it because they can't relate to anything about lgbtq ppl other than coming out. Someone on twitter/Tumblr said it best straight people are really only affected or included in gayness through coming out. Anything else and they have zero relatability to our/the community. Which is kind of sad.
I feel like it’s the same thing with Love, Simon where it’s made for lgbtq people to watch with their str8 friends and relatives so they will “understand.” I think while they’re not necessarily made for straight people *exclusively*, they’re made to at least be “digestible” for the str8s
"But I'm a Cheerleader" is a satire LGBT+ movie made in 2000 Available free with ads on RUclips so go form your own opinions (TW: it's not so PC, so the *F* word is used a bit) I think it's the closest movie to being *just for the gays* (I mean it's got RuPaul playing a "reformed gay") Natasha Lyonne stars. Pssst: There's even one girl at the reform camp who's actually straight but I'll let you laugh at my favorite scene in LGBT cinema history on your own 😂😭😂😂😂😂
Ok but wait I saw that three times and the one person who was straight I thought was an aim at trans representation?? Idk maybe I'm reaching but that's what leapt out at me
On the PC side, the F slur (to my memory) is portrayed as being insidiously used by the homophobic camp runners. So while I don't blame anyone who feels triggered hearing it, its usage wasn't portrayed positively.
love this! people don’t talk about representation in regards to being responsible. being gay isn’t a personality trait and I can’t wait for more movies that portray lgbtqia people with much more depth.
Some straight people can only deal with LGBT characters if the characters are made to suffer for the straights' entertainment. It's like we have to "earn" the respect of the cishets through suffering. For a long time already, lgbt characters have been written with tragic endings, kinda like POCs. I'm tired. Dorian Electra has a song that deals with this trope somewhat, it's called Live By the Sword.
You think you are saying something profound, but you literally make no sense. They people that work on and produce these movies are as progressive as you get. Literally no one working on such movies want to see lgbt people siffer. Oh wait! Its almost as if, in any decent storywriting, the main character goes through a STRUGGLE in order to grow and be dynamic!
@@amityFinder2099 you are obviously convoluting the point. My problem is not with LGBT characters going through regular struggles that cishet protagonists go through, my problem is that their identity of being LGBT is always made into a struggle. Two very different things. Also, you do not get to dictate what is "good enough" representation for us. You just don't. Your attitude comes of really "well they made a movie for you gays, just be happy about that". Naaah. [Verse 2] It's cold like the ocean, cold like the rain Show your devotion, show me the pain Show me the blood, show me you tried Show me the tears coming down from your eyes [Pre-Chorus] Live by the sword, you die by the sword, oh-oh ’Cause I'll get what's mine, baby You'll get what's yours
@@chatnoir9038 The problem i have is you thinking that the progressives making such movies are making LGBT characters go through struggle due to their identity (which they do) for their own pleasure. But no one should really have any expectations for modern movies and shows IMO, they're all shit.
"Cuz they're written by straight" It's true, if you don't believe me you can read some books that actually written by lgbtq writers and straight writers. You can see the difference.
But if we ask for there to be more LGBTQ directors, writers, and actors they get all huffy and harp on about how now "we're the ones discriminating" even though the community just wants meaningful representation.

Fun fact I am a aspiring film writer my focus my whole life has been movies about black who LGBT community and like foster children also scary movies wait on it 🤫
6:00 I totally agree. What makes it harder imo is that there are a lot of people in the LGBT community (lesbians and bi women especially) who WILL take whatever they can get, and praise big media companies for doing so little. It’s so frustrating, like... have better standards please.
True, and ive had my head bitten off for saying it. Saying this as a black person, if black people had the standard for representation that some LGBT ppl have, we would still have blackface on network television.
I been waiting for this one...cuz Happiest Season was underwhelming 😖 But I've seen nothing but write ups about how it's so amazing and ground breaking. It just wasn't that for me. I love the best friend , Jane, and Riley
it’s all about opportunities too like there’s small lgbt writers like myself with good ideas for movies or series but we aren’t in the bizz so they will never be heard ☹️
This is a discussion that came at a perfect time. I was just talking about this with my friend yesterday. Can't wait to see your opinions on the topic :)
I never noticed before how good you are at talking with your hands. Im not sure if you do this on purpose or if you just do it naturally. Love your videos!
"there's room in 2021 and beyond for LGBT projects that straight people won't understand." Abso-fucking-lutely Also, thank you for knowledging that the L Word is garbage. I came out later in life so the L Word was not my emotional support through my teenage years. I watched it during the pandemic and didn't even make it to the third season.
This movie was such a waste of time... I expected something lighthearted, not that deep but with the right amount of drama and a happy ending. But that was not drama that was outright ABUSE. I could not root for the characters I was just angry an bitter. Also this ending with the "everyone had a secret actually" and the fact that the family accepts Harper's lesbianism with no struggle is just downplaying homophobia and making it like it was all in her head
Everything is about making straight white people comfortable consuming and I'm over it. LGBTQIA+ characters and plots shouldn't be written with the overlying rule that it has to be palpable for Janet and John from suburbia. They can consume their stuff that makes them feel comfy. I want to see people just like me enjoying life just like everyone else because that's NORMAL and not "othered" by straight white society. Closest I've come to feeling adequately represented was with Noah's Arc and that show was out when I was in high school! I'm 32 now and pulling references from that show like a code book and it's sad because we need more shows like that.
"there's room in 2021 and beyond for LGBT projects that straight people won't understand" is my favorite line from this one! I feel like that is actually one of the big problems - usually predominantly by (or funded by) straight people. Young LGBTQ folks end up seeing those stories, characters, and dynamics and thinking that that is what the LGBTQ communities are all about. For me, coming from NYC where I was a gay pup, Pose and Saturday Church would have been fantastic to see as they more closely represented most of my peer group. Love seeing them now, but there was no such shows and films when I was a kid!
yes i just want a movie where it isn't a taboo to be gay 🤔 like its just a story and the characters are gay and it's not some big thing they are what they are
That’s why I like Thai BLs lmao. The only that really sucks though is the majority of the targeted audience is fujoshis and that kind of reflects in the comment section🤢 “wHos ToP???” But i just avoid those comments and it’s all fine.
Season of Love is an LGBTQ film that came out late 2019. It was a way better holiday film than Happiest Season. Was released on Tello Films which didn’t help with people knowing about it. Liked that the characters were all adults in their mid to late 20s.
Do you know what grinds my gears? Seeing wlw relationships getting fetishized AND seeing the girls (or at least one of them) cheating and being toxic to one and another. It would be nice if wlw films don't have those problematic types. I just wanted to see more healthier wlw relationship. Also I'd love to see more POC wlw representation.
i have seen happiest season.... 13 times. not because i like it, simply because it was gay....... and im disappointed every time i start the shit up again 🙃
Haunting of Bly Manor has been one of the most surprising satisfactory watch till now. The subtle wlw romantic storyline which wasn't the main storyline yet unfolded in parallel way showed the relationship as normal occurence rather than sensationalising it. Very balance portrayal imo.❤️
I was talking to someone about movies in the UK feeling like black stories need some type of proximity to whiteness to be valued or needs to be framed in a way the average white person would understand. This video really expanded on some of that discussion for me. Bad movies are allowed, as a straight person I know we make mediocre/shit stuff all the time. But still I wonder if the production of the movie was as diverse as the cast. I wonder sometimes if the target audience for these things are actually marginalised groups or in fact straight people. These movies can feel performative at times with the praise associated with making something like this overshadowing critique but I think you are right that there is no way one film targeted at a marginalised group can represent everyone..
I recommend everyone watch the heat on Apple TV. It’s an episode on Steven Spielberg’s amazing stories. It’s about teen lesbians and they’re both black! It was really good!
I remember watching the movie uncle Frank recently and I saw a lot of critics complain about it being cliche. I was lowkey mad because I'm like I'd rather have a movie with a cheesy happy ending then the typical violent, traumatic, or lackluster ending.
You should watch the movie Someone Great! While the main story line is around a straight couple, there's a major lesbian storyline that felt super authentic, the characters are in their late 20s, and the cast is really diverse - and it's a big budget film from netflix
As a straight white woman I can learn quite a lot from movies about groups I'm not apart of, and I'm sure many others are the same. I'd appreciate if they represented these communities respectfully so that people don't build up harmful stereotypes of people they've never met
OH MY GATO! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I loathed all the abuse present in Happiest Season and how normalized it was. I've been needing someone to articulate this.
I fully agree with your point that there are a lot of small changes this movie could have made, with keeping the same plot, that would have made it so much better.
Very interesting point of view. What are your thoughts on Portrait of a Lady on Fire? Personnally I think that movie has this complexity a depth you're talking about. (Specially bc it's not from the US so the approach is different + the directrice and cast and production are part of the community)

Also I'd really like a movie with a aromantic character that isn't portrayed as like wishing they felt love or whatever like I would love for a movie to show someone who was like me that didnt hate who they were like just a background character would be nice ya know. I know aro isn't the most like know identity but I just feel unsee and kinda sucks.
Most movies with two women in a relationship are dreadful. Every time my expectations go down to the point where I just watch to watch, I get what I can get... which is not good! Settling for less is not ok!
The half of it is pretty nice I gotta say, and book smart is a funny one. If you're down for subtitles anne+ is one of best things have ever seen. But ya we're still shedding the "we take the scraps and say thank you" thing.
As a lesbian, I found Duck Butter more relatable than Happiest Season, even though it was pretty cringy to watch at some scenes because who hasn't tried dating a hot femme party girl who was a mess just because she was good in bed and was also a mess themselves. Love the Living single reference. I feel the same!
4the car scene change you mentioned really made a huuge different!! honestly, the movie felt super unsatisfying to me. i was expecting in to be way lighter and good-feel and came out feeling dreadful and completely heartbroken even though i found some the comedic relief characters actually kinda funny. it was just mortifying ??
If anyone wants a good show to watch I want to recommend Raising Dion. It's on Netflix. The main focus is a kid with superhero powers and his single mom trying to cope with this without seeming crazy. But they do feature a black w|w couple in the show. I hope it gets renewed
Even race in this movie wasn’t handled well. The two black kids being antagonists, the black husband cheating. It’s a campy movie and achieves its goals but it’s disappointing to see these issues permeate this movie as well
Literally everyone in that show had a sad ending. If we're going to critique shows as a community, the criticism should be valid. The tragedy in that show was showered on everyone, for once it wasn't the lgbt characters that were singled out.
@@katara2021 true. Although the ending was painful, the relationship between Dani and Jamie was very healthy. No third party drama, no coming out drama, no mention about their sexuality. Just two women in love
@@sieekakhan6761 Yeah. It was so refreshing to be honest. There is one other piece of lgbt relationship that gives me the same emotion theirs did. It was in a korean drama and it was quite unexpected to be honest. There was really old writer who had the rights to his now dead friend's photography. A museum wanted to showcase them as they were unreleased pieces but the writer didn't want to. The two curators who visit him stay the night at the house the writer and photographer both had lived in and he overhears their conversation about a self photograph that the photographer had taken. It was a public piece. The female curator breaks down the photos concept with a lit of care and correctly states her theory, that the photographer is looking at someone and saying hello not goodbye. The Korean word for hello and goodbye is the same. But after his death others had incorrectly titled the photo goodbye. The writer is moved by this and shows them the room where all the unreleased photos are kept. They are all photos of the writer. And you can just tell how much the person who took them loved him. There were so many and he told them that he had known the photographer loved him and he had loved him too but the photographer was held back from confessing because of his father who was a military man. The writer regretted that he never told him that he loved him. Even though they lived together for so long and spent most of their life together. The woman tells him that the photographer knew. Anyone who looked at these photos can tell that you love the person behind the camera. Anyway they do end up doing the exhibition. I know that it's a sad story but for the country it's based in and because of the direction and dialogue and atmosphere of the whole episode I can't help but adore it. It was so raw and sweet and handled with so much care. Anyway sorry for the long comment. I just wanted to share it.
@@sieekakhan6761 It wasn't a big part unfortunately. It was like 20 minutes of an episode. It's from a romance drama so there is a fair amount of romantic tension between the two leads too during the episode. If you wanna watch it you should. I love the drama itself. It got a bit too melodramatic at the end but it had one of the sweetest, most supportive, non toxic straight relationship I had ever seen in media. They actually communicate. The novelty. Anyway if you wanna check it out it's called Her Private Life. If you wanna check out the story I mentioned it's in episode 5 after about 47 minute mark. The drama had the most amount of lgbt support I had seen. Korean is still very conservative about all this unfortunately. The main character actually misunderstood the female lead and her best friend as a lesbian couple. And he tries to protect their secret and support them, which was very sweet. The misunderstanding wasn't done in a malicious way or to make fun of lgbt people. The lead thanks him for trying to help her and says whatever your reason maybe. And I really loved his response. He said - I didn't do it out of pity. It's nothing to pity anyway. This conversation actually happens when they are in the writer's house I think. Try the show out if you get the chance.
Everything you're saying is true. Even having LGBT people DIRECTING or writing for the movie does not always help. lol Sometimes it's just about having someone who is able to tell a good story that HAPPENS to have LGBT people in the lead. They are simply trying to force a relationship rather than write a story featuring two people who just happen to be the same gender. Unfortunately, I blame ourselves because we are so quick to celebrate any form of representation so they give the bare minimum.
It’s the exact same with some Tyler perry movies. Like since we don’t have a lot it’s like “here’s the bare minimum, be grateful that u got something” ... Uh.. no .. 🗑..Ex .. Fall from grace .. I actually enjoyed it viewing it as a Dramedy

Wow. Painfully true.
It’s a holdover from the Hayes code where Hollywood literally made this a requirement 🙃
Yes! Similarly to how Black films tend to win Oscars if it’s connected to Slavery or some kind of trauma. Smh.
@@heyjavonnejay Exactly! It's like some sort of fucked up entertainment fetish for these people.
We need to earn the straights', cis', white peoples' respect through performing suffering for their entertainment.
can we please add more black wlw relationships that aren’t interracial😃
I feel you but the wording comes across as "okay we've had enough interracial couples give us people sticking to their race"
@@LangkeeLongkee thats what i said. No?
Honestly there's such a pervasive WHITENESS to movies for gay people in general? Like we got 2 different gay romcoms for the holiday and both had only white men at the center. I need casting directors and writers to realize that having one white lead with curly hair & one with straight or having white leads of different hair colors does not diversity make.
Yeah only white people are allowed to be gay apparently
It's like a character has to be white, thin, conventionally attractive etc. to "make up" for the fact that they are LGBT+. The white cishets will just implode if a character portrays two or more identities that are marginalized.
it honestly feels like they copy past the characters in those movies 😐 the style, the skin, the everythinggg

Yes!!! Not all movies need to be made for the cishet white audience
Absolutely
studios need to make money , and to make money with a movie one needs foreign audiences . and foreign audiences will not accept these movies(think Russia, think China , think Africa+ middle east ) . back in the 90's things were not as bad because movies didn't need LOADS of money to be made like now . tons of great LGBT movies were made back then and were a worldwide success . Nowadays however , movies are not original anymore ( only high budget remakes, superhero movies, ect are being made
YES YES YES YES!!! Sorry lol I just heavily agree
I think Brooklyn nine-nine wrote Rosa (a bisexual woman) in a fantastic way, without playing on the typical tropes.
Yeah she comes out later in the series and its a very well-handled and kinda wholesome storyline

Carol on Netflix is really good tho. Imo shows that you can feel a emotion connection more so than a sexual one is top tier.
A portrait of a lady on fire is also really good!!

I fricking LOVE that movie!! One of the best lesbian movies out there lol 😂❤️
I'm tired. @@amityFinder2099 you are obviously convoluting the point. My problem is not with LGBT characters going through regular struggles that cishet protagonists go through, my problem is that their identity of being LGBT is always made into a struggle. Two very different things.

I'd love for you to do a video on the struggles of dating & being a lesbian black woman in the LGBTQIA+ community. I am one & I have so many.

I low key wanted Abby to runaway from the beginning of the movie like the entire ordeal was just traumatizing.
I recommend everyone watch the heat on Apple TV. It’s an episode on Steven Spielberg’s amazing stories. It’s about teen lesbians and they’re both black! It was really good!
One funny thought in my head through this was “how did Jade relate to Broke Back Mountain?”
I remember watching the movie uncle Frank recently and I saw a lot of critics complain about it being cliche. I was lowkey mad because I'm like I'd rather have a movie with a cheesy happy ending then the typical violent, traumatic, or lackluster ending.
im getting sick of only watching shows that represent me that have no healthy relationships and the whole plot is coming out
I would never allow anyone to make me hide myself like that
You should watch the movie Someone Great! While the main story line is around a straight couple, there's a major lesbian storyline that felt super authentic, the characters are in their late 20s, and the cast is really diverse - and it's a big budget film from netflix
Also, can we get more ace characters? Please??? Now that Bojack is over we've got basically nothing.
As a straight white woman I can learn quite a lot from movies about groups I'm not apart of, and I'm sure many others are the same. I'd appreciate if they represented these communities respectfully so that people don't build up harmful stereotypes of people they've never met
I like the way you think!!
I'm so down for Think Piece Thursdays!
OH MY GATO! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I loathed all the abuse present in Happiest Season and how normalized it was. I've been needing someone to articulate this.
I fully agree with your point that there are a lot of small changes this movie could have made, with keeping the same plot, that would have made it so much better.
lmao i liked the gay tease that Kristen was giving me though :(
Very interesting point of view. What are your thoughts on Portrait of a Lady on Fire? Personnally I think that movie has this complexity a depth you're talking about. (Specially bc it's not from the US so the approach is different + the directrice and cast and production are part of the community)
where can you watch it?
@@iamjadefox I think it's on amazon prime but I watched it on streamcloud :/
Why that dad comment have to hit so hard though!!!
Love you Jade but omg girl the 1 white fuzz on your sweater.... I can’t stop staring at it🤣🤣
I never thought about representation like that, that we choose
About happiest season...could be better but we had worse
Jade I literally pause every two minutes in your videos because I have to take a moment to wheeze in between jokes
Jade is one of the few people who can make me laugh that hard lmao.
I’ve seen more serious indie lgbtq+ movies instead of the ones that go to theaters
Agree. Duck Better had some wild and cringy scenes but it was an interesting story and pretty well done.
I feel so conflicted about duck butter, it was insane and made me really sad, but it also has human moments that i really appreciated
i thought they were both relatable, but in different ways. both had exaggerated elements that obviously weren’t relatable.
tasha and alice definitely had some conflicts in their relationship when it came to her being black.....
Would love to know your opinion on The Watermelon Woman ! (1996 film)
also this video is great, i love your channel, thank you
Your suggestion of Abi making the choice of going to Harper’s is a such alternative! :)
Jade make us a movie
If anyone wants a good show to watch I want to recommend Raising Dion. It's on Netflix. The main focus is a kid with superhero powers and his single mom trying to cope with this without seeming crazy. But they do feature a black w|w couple in the show. I hope it gets renewed
This video made me subscribe without even looking at the rest of your content. So much truth.
Even race in this movie wasn’t handled well. The two black kids being antagonists, the black husband cheating. It’s a campy movie and achieves its goals but it’s disappointing to see these issues permeate this movie as well
I too, relate to living single rather than anything else that is supposed to be for me
I love The Haunting of Bly Manor cuz they didnt dwell with the whole "wlw coming out" storyline HOWEVER it has a sad ending which im so tired of
Literally everyone in that show had a sad ending.
@@katara2021 wait what Korean drama is that??? I want to watch
"Lgbtq+ movies that straight people won't understand" WOW yes. This is exactly what we need
Here to feed the algorithm
Been watching you for years!! Love your content :)
*quietly inserts a recommendation for Black Sails and slips away*
No one had a happy ending in that.
It’s the exact same with some Tyler perry movies. Like since we don’t have a lot it’s like “here’s the bare minimum, be grateful that u got something” ...
Uh.. no .. 🗑..Ex .. Fall from grace ..
I actually enjoyed it viewing it as a Dramedy
i'm sick of the "straight girl with a husband until she discovers she likes another woman trope" like that's still cheating, and i've seen SO many movies like this
Besides the content, which is top notch: I love your setup. It’s so grey these days where I live, I love the bright light and your decor and colorful sweater.
You should do a movie review on the half of it, it's on Netflix
Can anyone who has watched The Half of It on Netflix tell me what you thought of it. Because honestly I really liked it but I sometimes push myself to ignore flaws and just blindly love the gayness that I see.
U should write a coming out show or movie. The way u said that about how Abby could've made her own choice really made a lot of sense 2 me. #waiting4jadefoxproductions
On the topic of "representation", I personally would rather have NO representation than BAD representation on film.
Who remembers 'High Art'? I loved that movie.
This reminds me of that film coming out about representation, think it's called Love To Bait Me or Love Me Bait Me, something like that.
