  • In 1937 the state of Tennessee passed a law that forbade marriage for anyone under the age of 16, without their parents' permission. The first case brought under that new law involved 32 year-old Homer Peels, who married Geneva Hamby, who was 11 years old, in Monroe County.
    Today we tell that story.

With a mother like Annie I imagine Geneva saw things a child her age should never see; so sad to say she may not have been a virgin when she got married. For her to not be fearful of Homer or marital expectations tells me she’s aware of what happens behind closed doors. For her, having stability, a safe home and meals was probably a dream come true. Just a horrible life for a child, but there are stories that are worse. There are archives stating children as young as 9 were working in Brothels. Sick world.
