Sad British high street disaster. Where are the butchers? Where are independent bakeries? I live in Brussels and in a 10 minute walking radius there are restaurants, chemists, several bakeries & patisseries, bike repair, butchers, the best chocolate shop in Belgium😊, several bars with terraces that are packed as soon as a ray of sunshine appears, several clinics, small supermarkets and a local market every Wednesday. Now , if they can do it here what the hell is wrong with the same thing happening in the UK? When I visit family in the UK all I see is bleeding greggs everywhere, and get this…it is not a joke, I saw a store selling clothes with GREGGS written all over the clothes 😂 🤮

I'm old enough to remember when Gregg's were the hated face of national scale capitalism, forcing local bakeries out of business by the score. Now people defend them because they're British and at least they're not global scale capitalism which will eventually do them all in until everything is owned by Starbucks.

Belgium has quite a lot of legislation to help small (family owned) businesses. For example, all shops must close one day a week, even if it is part of a large chain capable of keeping the shop open seven days per week. These kind of regulations help level the playing field. Even so, there is still an increase in the number of global brands on the high street, but not as much as in the UK.

    Two things...
    1) the irony of a Subway ad on the hoarding in the background given their business model of opening franchises in every other high street shop, and
    2) Pret were handy for cheap coffee: London pre-Lurgy, take away filter coffee in a reusable cup was 49p, up to about a quid back in January this year. HOWEVER I was told they are withdrawing the filter coffee because no one ever used to buy it. Mainly because they didn't advertise it. So I won't be back cos the black muck they pass as coffee is shite.
But another lovely story. Even if I am now traumatised for life at the thought of Captain Birdseye's dick end...
