“We’re talking Millennium Falcon” 😂😂😂😂 Gnats absolutely do suck! We laugh out loud so much watching you! You’re very entertaining. It would be a blast to go for a ride with you.
Thank you. Despite the gnats, that was a really fun ride. I just subscribed to your channel also. Keep putting those videos out! Looks like some fun places to visit.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, this was a really fun trip. Always wanted to do this-for about 18 years! I think I’m going to do it again. Maybe go down the western side of the state.
You’re Not Gonna Stop. Many years ago, as a racer, I had a small image of Bernard Hinault taped to my bars to remind me that racing is suffering, and would Hinault quit? Never. Now in my 60s I have a stem cap from Bikepacking and it says Pedal Further. Nice and easy, just keep pedaling. And of course those tailwind miles that push one to 20+ mph are always fun!!
I am following your route with RideWithGPS and Strava. Neither apps 'heat-map' show any southern bicycle use below where you were forced to turn around on Assateague Island. I wonder if a fat tire bike could make the trip at low tide? I suspect that such a trip would be in violation or the rules however given the sign which said 'no bikes'. Also, currently if you turn on Google Maps 'bicycle route feature', the dirt/unpaved trails end where you had to turn around so maybe they have now 'refreshed' their map. By the way, we had military members 'down range' who were using Strava as they exercised around locations which were secret. Bad guys used the 'heat map' feature of Strava to find their locations. The military has since banned the use of Strava when you are deployed 'down range'.
lol…well, I’m glad Google has been updated and, just for grins, I just searched and it appears that TripAdvisor has also been updated with “post has been removed at the authors request”. Perhaps the authors were just confused because two people had claimed to have ridden that mystery trail. The park ranger, on that fateful day, informed me that the islands have NEVER been connected so you would need a kayak to make it all the way. Long(er) story but I saw Strava used in an HR dispute years back. Made me think twice about sharing my daily runs. Anyways…back to the video: that was a great ride overall. Such beautiful weather and countryside. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this video, I live in Delaware and this is the first time I heard about the Great Delmarva Passage, I live in Newark. You have given me a new bike riding goal. chow
OMG, you crack me up!! I nearly peed my pants listening to "THE NATS"!! So, I guess I am adding THIS ride to my ever growing list!! Thanks again for another excellent video.
Lol. Yea, they were an ever-present challenge on this trip. I’ve never seen it this bad before. They were just everywhere. I already ordered a net to put over my helmet next year. Thanks for watching, Amy!
Yeah, I really enjoyed this trip. A lot more than I expected. I found the Virginia portion incredibly beautiful. I’m thinking of doing this again next year but coming back up the Chesapeake Bay side. With all of the “fingers”, I think it will take about twice as long coming back. Little Delaware has a lot to offer! 😉
On behalf of the residents of Leipsic, 😮😊. I just finished watching the first day. And the start of your trip reminds me to ponder why this State cannot make a traffic free trail connecting Markell with the C&D Canal trail. And the Gnats! Horrible that time of year! Can’t wait to watch the remainder.
Emotions? While riding a bicycle? ALWAYS!😃 Being “out there” clears the mind and one is enveloped by the beauty of the nature that surrounds them. It is at times very emotionally overwhelming in a very positive uplifting way. I’m fortunate that I live in Western Kent County DE. The majority of my rides are traffics free in agricultural/forested areas.
@@RideAlongAdventures ive only somewhat biketouring local area...since 2015. Only last year had my budget opened up more for better gear and little more for lodging costs. Still venturing further beyond DC and Pittsburgh...although mapped places you mention
I'm looking for a good tune-up ride for my new bike and was considering something in Florida. I was looking at the Adventure Cycling map and came across the Delmarva route. That led me to your ride last fall. I'm thinking I would take the train to Philly and ride the entire trail down to Currituck. I know that you mostly just stuck to the Delaware coast for your ride. Were you actually following the AC route or did you formulate your own? And might I suggest that you invest in a Buff for those gnats and neck sun protection?
Cool, Jeff! Full transparency: no, at the time, I didn’t know Adventure Cycling even had a map. I just sort of did my own thing but the detail looks pretty similar. It’s really beautiful countryside. I wanted to keep going. It was hard to stop. The trick is getting over/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. You need to contact the authorities to arrange transport (and I’ve heard conflicting reports: one is that they have discontinued official service!) or try to arrange an Uber. Regardless, there’s no bike lane. On my ride, I backtracked up the road and talked to a truck driver who was willing to take me across but then I got worried about getting stuck on the VA side. Lol…yeah, I bought a helmet mosquito net first thing after getting home. 😂 my gosh that was incredible. I’ve ridden that road (Rt 9) a dozen times and never had issues like that. Wet swampy weather. Stay in touch. Depending on the dates, maybe we could meet up for some of it. I’m headed back to Florida in the fall to do some other routes. Coast to coast trail for sure. bryanwehmeyer@ridealongadventures.com
@@RideAlongAdventures I was just re-watching this video as I plan my route and Google does have the trail marked on Assateague and if you click Cycle it does show that you can go that way. The reality is that it's a hiking trail with a bunch of camping sites all along the way. I have really gotten away from using Google for biking directions and now lean more on RideWithGPS. Maybe I will use Streetview on Google Maps but not when the route is a complete unknown. BTW, yours is the only video I can find on cycling the Delmarva so cheers to that.
@@JeffRevell lol…yeah, that google route is comical. I actually email them to correct it but no response and, yes, it still shows as a viable route. The ranger said the islands don’t even connect!! She asked if i had a canoe in my panniers. 😂 I’ve heard mixed reports that it used to connect before some severe storms blew through but others have said it never connected.
Thank you for sharing your trip. Watched this one after the GAP one. Along the lines of emotion, I haven’t bike packed, but have had a few moments where I choked up at the end of a ride. One would be my one and only century. 2nd would be finishing a 27 mile ride one year after breaking my hip 11 miles into a 54 miler where my post op course was complicated and I’d didn’t even walk for three months. I think it’s because we love what we do and know what it takes to get it done. Then that small part in your brain that says I don’t want this to ever end.
Thanks, Jen. Wow, your second example must have been so tough. Maybe there’s tears of relief that we can do what our bodies sometime say we can’t. We are WAY stronger than we think. I’m happy for you that you got back out there! I think part of it, for me, is that I’ve been flying over this country, for work, for almost 30 years and now I’m finally seeing it at the ground level. And it’s amazingly beautiful.
That’s a great perspective as well. People rush from place to place and never see what’s around them. It’s great to just slow down and take it all in. Can’t wait to see what other adventures you share! Be safe out there!
Hey, thanks! I’ll take that as an extra huge compliment because I LOVE your channel. I thought about you guys last weekend because I finally got to ride a little more of the Montour Trail in Pgh and I wondered if the two of you have done that. The next time I do the GAP, I’m going to go the other way from downtown and add a day to the trip for this trail.
Virginia Beach sign...cool...only 24 miles. I want to make my way from Exmore area to Virginia Beach & Williamsburg. From Williamsburg ride the 50 mile trail to Richmond. Then make way to Washington DC.
Now you’re talking!! I’m with you. Actually, I’ve got this dream to start in Cincinnati, take the OTET to Cleveland, catch the Erie to Pgh trail (whatever condition that’s in), then the GAP C&O to DC, on to Richmond, then to Williamsburg. I started mapping it out…then I got back to my job. 😉
Yeah, apparently it was never an actual trail which is highly weird given that google routed people based on “activity”. At one point it is simply a series of small islands that are disconnected. The park ranger was having a laugh asking me if I had a canoe in my bike bags. 😂 there’s a funny follow up story but I shouldn’t share it here. If you’re interested, email me: bryan@ridealongadventures.com
when I get emotional is when I first leave on a tour I wanna go but at the same time I wanna stay. I get like that anytime I travel. But to tell you the truth a bicycle tourist has the best seat in the house we get see more experience more than anybody around cause we don't have that steel cage around us with a gas engine propelling us way to fast and not slowing down to smell the roses. and don't get to meet folks like us bicyclist do. 10 mph and loving it.
Great adventure, Bryan! Now I know what Delaweather means. Sorry about the nats... that would be a deal breaker for me. Nats in the mouth and all over the body is not an adventure... it's an adwrencher. Same with bad directions that come with the caveat... "We saw you coming a mile away..."🙈💨🧨 The tears happen when someone puts their finger right on the tender spot of your heart when you least expect it... That's when you know you are not alone.🙏🙊🙉 Gord
In a word - yes. To all the emotions you can feel, especially those - when you don't stop 🚴♀

my rides take me to a peaceful place, sometimes miles go by too quick and i slow down
My one chief goal for ‘23 is just that: slow down and take it all in.
Did they ever fix it where you can ride on or near the beach? Or, do you just not go that way😮😮
