Lake Trout on Fort Peck

Ice fishing lake trout on Montana’s Fort Peck Reservoir. Tayler Michels joins Lars Sorenson on Fort Peck in the Dry Arm Region. Fort Peck has a ridiculous lake trout population and is often regarded as one of the top lake trout destinations in the lower 48. Safe ice conditions came later this winter on Fort Peck but much of the Dry Arm now has 11 to 13 inches of ice.
Top strategy was finding deep points and humps in 60-80 feet of water next to deeper water. The first ten to fifteen minutes on a spot was typically the best. Important to keep moving and hitting fresh spots. Aggressively jigging the Super Leech Flutter Spoon caught most of the fish. Set lines with dead baits were slow this particular trip although set lines can work well on Fort Peck at times.

I just spent 6 days out on Peck. Lakers are my favorite fish to target. Most averaged around 10 lbs but was about to get one just under 18 lbs. clam leach is da bomb out there.
In two different occasions I was able to see lakers destroying a bait ball of
Cisco’s on my livescope. Pretty amazing to watch.

no one ever hooks a king through the ice while chasing lakers, why is that? are they main basin by the dam?

It happens once in a while but it is rare. Would love to catch one through the ice. They do seem to stay by the dam and most people who hook into one never see it because they have so much horsepower.
