    Polyneuropathy (B/L): diffuse dysfunction of peripheral nerves
    - presentaiton:
    -- Somatosensory: of the B/L distal limbs (longest nerves): introduce the most common syndromes: numbness ascends from toes to feet
    --- progression:
    ---- 1. numbness starts from toes and begins to ascend
    ---- 2. numbness ascends to knees, and starts from finger tips
    -- LMN: proximal limb (shoulders/thighs) weakness or loss of muscle stretch reflexes
    -- Autonomic: orthostatic hypotension
    - pathophysiology:
    -- demyelinating: myelination is being removed
    -- de-axonating: peripheral nerve axons are being injured
    -- both:
    - causes: genetic, idiopathic, autoimmune, metabolic, toxic
    -- genetic: Charcot-marie-tooth syndrome: (some mutations cause demyelination, others axonal loss)
    -- autoimmune: guillain-barree syndrome: demyelinating:
    -- metabolic: diabetes melitus: blood

      Excellent video content! Apologies for butting in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Taparton Sturdy Nerves Takeover (probably on Google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for Getting rid of Neuropathy without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my close friend Aubrey finally got astronomical results with it.

    The difference between upper and lower motor neuron?

    • @natoyle
      @natoyle 3 года назад

      Basically the location. Upper motor neuro involves neurons within the brain which travel down to a certain point in the spinal cord and do not innverate the periphery (arms, leg, organs- apart from brain). Lower motor neurons exist in the spinal cord too but leave to innervate the peripheral system. You can sometimes differentiate whether you think its an UMN or LMN lesion.

    is it possible that it will start under the knee?

    • @MatthewBJensen
      @MatthewBJensen  5 лет назад +2

      The symptoms of most cases of polyneuropathy start at the end of the longest nerves, so usually starting in the feet.

    What purpose does this serve if there isn't any possible remedies provided ?

      I think this is intended as background for medical students? If you have symptoms, you should see a doctor. Some neuropathies can be cured. Some can be improved. Some are incurable.

      Neurologists don't really understand it enough to cure it. Many times it's an unknown cause, so if they don't know what is causing it they can't treat it except with drugs like gabapentin and lyrica. I really think when they don't know they should run a genetic test and they might find the answer. Been begging for one for 3 years after one neurologist diagnosed me with cmt. The new neurologist at the university hospital stopped looking for a diagnosis after a skin biopsy showed small fiber. They blame it on high cholesterol even though most of my problems started when I lowered my cholesterol.
