    So amazingly cozy. In my humble opinion, the only way to improve this studio would be in the corner where there is a basket, I would put a dog bed and the goodest girl could be next to me while I doodle and paint away. ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for the tour!

      Ha ha! Years ago I had a very functional and unaesthetic workspace, but gradually I started collecting furniture and storage that really appealed to me (I've had to do it very slowly) because my surroundings really seem to impact how I feel. I'm so thankful to have this space to work in; it makes me feel inspired. :)

      @notesinthemargin 3 года назад +7

      Hi 👋 Natasha’s fiancé Dominic here,
      I’m a big fan of the view too, and I’m glad you like the floorboards!
      If you’re interested, we stained the floor with ‘Clay’ from Mylands Earth Stain range of wood stains.
      We were so pleased with how the floor turned out that I used it again when we decorated the Breakfast Room (which looks out over the same view) and I’m planning on using it in a few more rooms in the house too!
      The only downside is it does smell quite strongly when one first applies it, so something to do in warm weather when you can leave all the windows open!
      Otherwise I really recommend it!
      It’s really lightfast, made with natural pigments, and gives a room such a tranquil feel, and no, I’m not sponsored by Mylands! 😄

      I honestly would have had the main desk by the window if the radiator wasn't there! I look out at that view so often. It's great to just stand there with a cup of tea and watch the birds (and sometimes the squirrels climbing the trees!).

    Thank you for sharing your studio and storage. I’ve found out when I could afford to grow my art supplies, trying to find comfortable with easy access grew more difficult. I found pots, like you use, to be my favorite way to store my brushes on my desk. I need them where I can see them so I don’t reorder before I need them. If you like something once, you will like it again… probably every time you see it! (My kitchen pot is red) Thank you for the butchers tray way to store the brushes you are using most. I’m now using my butchers tray to my desktop to hold the brushes I’m using. I’ve been trying to find a safe way to store my brushes while they’re drying. Now, they can live there too! I do love the rolling carts, they’re awesome and I decided they are better in multiples. Congratulations on the new FlexiSpot Standing Desk! That should help you a great deal. It’s so easy to get caught in work we forget to get up and move around. Your space is wonderful and cheerful, a perfect setting to create your beautiful works of art!

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! The butcher's tray was something I bought recently from Jackson's with the intention of using it to mix large quantities of acrylic paint, but I've found that it's more useful to me on the desk at the moment. I love that it can store the brushes I'm using without having them rolling all over the desk, and I can use it as extra mixing space if needed! I've found that I can never have too much storage space in the studio - it really helps me to keep things organised. When I didn't have enough, there was just so much stuff everywhere and I'd lose things etc. I really couldn't be without the art carts either!

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Alyona! I think artists' workspaces often reflect their work and colour palette - and even their dress sense sometimes! I can imagine that it's difficult to do everything on one small desk. My old desk/table will be used in a small room adjacent to my studio that will become the room where I pack all of my orders and do admin/computer work etc. I am finding it difficult to do everything in one room - it quickly becomes a chaotic mess at times like that. By the way, I cleaned, tidied and reorganised this room for THREE DAYS before I filmed this video - that's how bad it was!

    The studio looks really amazing with all the changes. I'm so glad you can see how much will benefit your well being. I love Arnold the Armadillo!!!so cute!!! ,love the idea of a studio mascot!!! I like too that you have some crystals on your desk too,I have crystals around my studio too. the new art cart for all your watercolour palettes is a great addition too. The colours you have painted the walls really works too almost lke defining different areas of the studio. My studio space is compact too, so it's lovely to see how you have arranged yours.The book case is a beautiful piece of furniture it has the look of driftwood. I have a few old trunks in my studio space too. I wonder if the Flexi spot desk might be an option for me with my new physicality,especially after recent spinal surgery.,the fact it has the potential to transform how you work I think struck a chord with me because I can see it could do this for me as well,I stand at my easel,but don't actually have a desk in my studio. I love the view you have from the studio with the verdigris coloured roof. Such a lovely gift to get a glimpse behind the scenes so to speak and to haer the reasons for how you have configured the studio so it works in the best way for you,really insightful. It will sound strange but the aesthetic of your studio space does reflect in your work,the light in your studio is realy fantastic and this makes itself visible in your work,sorry not finding the words very well,but hope you can see what I meant.
    Art carts are he way to go for sure!!. The bin in my studio is actually a ceramic bread bin, in that famous blue and white striped (devonware? or cornish blue?),I smashed the lid years ago,but loved the bin so much I kept it and it became my bin.
    It's great to haer that you and Dominic are doing more things together as well. I think the desk as wel as helping your overall well being will also really boost your creative well being too. I hope the newly configured studio really fuels your inspiration on your new creative journey. (matt)

      Isn't Arnold adorable?! I bought him from an Etsy seller earlier this year. I just fell in love with him, and I felt like the studio needed a mascot! The desk is incredible - I would highly recommend it. They're so well-built - very heavy and sturdy. I can't get over how easily and smoothly it goes up and down, and I love the fact that it remembers your favourite sitting and standing heights. I'm looking forward to not spending as much time sitting as I think it's causing me so many health issues. I hope that you're continuing to recover well - I'm sending lots of good thoughts and good vibes your way! :)

      @@NatashaNewtonArt I think once I have fully recovered and recovered from my spinal surgery,a stansing daesk might actually be good for me in the future,sitting for long periods of time does Impact your spine and posture ,I have had simmilar back and neck problems to you all my life, so once I can have the cage/brace and metal rods reomved from my torso,I think a stnding desk like this one would be good, as standing stetches and strengthens the spine. A few artists I follow here on yoytube have invested in this desk and all say how much it has benefited them. I will talk to my partner Craig about his and go from there but something tells me it would be an investment in my own long term future and welbeing/creative wellbeing. Arnold is definitly Adorable!!! my studio mascot is one of my Lego minifigures from my hige collection of them, it's of an artist with a brush and a palette to and paint splats on his clothes.

    The Collins pocket guild to the sea shore is both beautiful and a good way to get a accurate ID on organisms. It style of identical is known as a key, it has a statement on a feature and you follow through depending on the organisms has till you get to a identification. I’m a marine biologist and the main book we use for lab id (Handbook of the Marine Fauna of North-West Europe , edited by Peter Hayward and John S. Ryland) used the same system. The Collins book may use the old names for things, the ranges will be wrong and it is missing so newer stuff but it is so far the only book I can find which has a keyed approach to flora (plants) in the U.K. waters and have success identified so very weird sea plant with it (I did a Google to check the naming and get a photo to verify but that was just to prove to someone else)

    In addition to the sit/stand desk, have you considered a small desktop easle for you smaller drawings etc? I do digital work and it makes such a difference to have my drawing surface elevated and angled so I am not hunched over my table. I think attaching the paper to a drawing board and setting it on a small tabletop easle would make a huge difference for you.

      I have one! It's tucked under the desk behind the photo board that looks like a marble table top! I don't use it all the time, but it really does help and it's going to be even better to be able to use it while standing now. :)

    I’m sorry to hear about the pain and the migraines. ☹️ Those are awful.
    Can you do a tour of your books? I’m particularly curious about the looks-like-a-series, on the upper left shelf of your desk? I have a friend who gets to know people by looking at their bookshelves, and from the looks of yours I think we’d get along just fine. 😊 May I recommend “Bright Earth” by Phillip Ball, if you haven’t read it already? It’s a history of color, paint, ink, and related.

    Loving your studio tour! The way our house is, I have my workspaces in 3 different smaller spaces. It's not good for consistency and keeping on task. Some definite changes are overdue for me.
    As you may know, Jackson's is such a great art supplier and is so popular in the U.S. that they now have a U.S. website but the merch still has to come from the U.K. I've never ordered anything from them, and of course, the shipping is a good bit higher to ship over here. BUT I've heard people say that because they have such good prices, that they believe that offsets the higher shipping costs to the U..S.😊 I've browsed around the Jackson's site before, so I'm sure to find some tempting buys there and order from them one of these days.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад

      Hi Nancy! I can imagine that it's difficult to have your workspace in several smaller spaces. It's definitely beneficial to have everything I need to be able to work efficiently around me and within arm's reach. And yes, Jackson's have so many products at great prices. Their own brand range of art supplies is very good too. :)

    I have a question, why do all my succulents die ? I have an aloe I have had for years. It's the only one out of close to 20 succulents that has lived over the years. The rest die with in a month. Yours look so healthy

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад +1

      I've had my succulents for a few years now and the most important thing is to give them enough light (some varieties need more than others) and don't overwater them! They HATE being overwatered; if anything you need to neglect them a bit. I'm going to repot one of them today as we realised that he's standing in water (I had thought he wasn't getting enough, so I over-compensated and accidentally gave him too much) and although he looks good right now, his roots will rot if I leave him. I also have another one that suffered badly when I moved him as he wasn't getting enough light, so he's now back in his favourite place on the windowsill! They're fussy little critters. They also need proper succulent compost and good drainage in their pot (I put stones in the bottom). I hope that helps you a bit!

    Could you do a video explaining the use and advantages of gouache vs. acrylic gouache? I have found that using gouache muddies my watercolors, so I tend to use for highlights only. How does acrylic gouache differ from acrylic paint? I swatched a new palette of handmade watercolors using a little landscape inspired by your work, so your name is now in my "book". I too find joy in simply being in my creative space and find it less stressful to start if I have everything around me ready to go. Your videos bring such joy. Thank you for sharing your work.🐑
