  • To repel raccoons, avoid interaction with them, as they are very social creatures who will learn to come back for food, never leave out pet food in the yard and even sprinkle hot spices around the yard to discourage them from exploring. Repel raccoons in a humane way with advice from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening.

After you put the cayenne pepper around the plant, you still have to water it, which will cause the pepper to seep into the soil around the plant. Are there any harmful effects to the plant from the spice you're using?

ok, I have bird feeders but I've also noticed squirrels, now raccoons at night and one bunny. I figured out how to keep squirrels out of the feeder by dumping cayenne pepper in it, now to get rid of the raccoons because they look for the food on the ground the the birds drop the food; so the cayenne pepper is going on the ground, and I'm going to sprinkle some on my fence. But I don't mind the bunny though. Will the pepper hurt the bunny? I don't want to hurt the bunny

Right - just go to 2:45 & skip the "don't feed the animals bit...." (Hint, no one looking to get rid of raccoons is dumb enough to feed them, lol!)
As far as pepper - I've used a 3-prong approach that seems to work. I spray the trees and bushes where they like to come into my yard with pepper spray, then scatter pepper pellets, finally, I spread coyote urine pellets. Seems OK, but must be repeated quite often.
If you're lucky enough to see them, when they turn to look at you (and they always do) you can spray just over their heads with a defense-type, long reaching pepper gel. Sabre makes a good one - be sure to get gel (the spray has too much blow-back) and get the large canister with at least a 15 foot range.
I swear they communicate with each other because I was harassed by the larger more aggressive raccoons in the our neighborhood most nights while walking - they would stand me off and not let me pass in alleys here in Boulder where we are quite overrun. (I find several each year with distemper so they're not a healthy population - they can also carry rabies - and roundworms live in their scat which is deadly to pets and humans - I definately want to keep them out of my yard and off my tables.) Strobe lights, waving my arms, stomping, yelling... Nothing worked.
I was finally pissed-off enough that I took my pepper gel out of my holster and sprayed one just over his head. Wow, did he run!
So that was a year ago and now they start to hold their ground (or come aggressively toward me) like always, but only until we're about 30 feet apart, when they suddenly scurry away. I honestly think they all know what I did once, lol! It's so weird. Or maybe it's my new-found 'don't f- with me attitude' lol!
I've sprayed attacking dogs the same way with immediate results. (The people in Boulder think their dogs need their "freedom", ha!) No need to ever aim for the face, animals are so sensitive they just need to catch a whiff of it and they're off.
In fact I might try sitting out a few nights waiting for them to come into my yard (where they poo and eat my tomatoes - one bite out of each, geesch!). Then I'll spray with the Sabre pepper gel. One spray might keep them all out of my yard the rest of the summer. Who knows?

I have raccoons in my attic now. I've lived in this house for 39 years, never a problem. I learned a lot from the professionals that are removing them from my property, and you never use a hose because , first of all, they can get very aggressive, especially when they're are annoyed, so never hose them, or toss things at them. It's an extremely expensive proposition to remove them, and yes, they are extremely intelligent animals, but also very dangerous, plus they carry roundworms and some can have rabies, so you want them out asap. They completely destroyed my flower beds and dug out a 5 ft planter full of trailing vincas. We had a 4 month drought here and that seems to contribute to this problem, apparently. They were hunting for grub worms .. I've never hosed, or annoyed them in any way, plus the fact that they're out at night, so even if you felt the need to hose them, you'd have to be outside all night long, and who's going to do that. I noticed as they were trapping them, they would emerge from my attic space between 7pm-8pm at night, so there was a pattern there. So far we've caged a 35 lb female, but there's still noise in the attic, and they usually trap at 72 hr intervals, and she may have been traveling with her ''juveniles" as they call them from an earlier litter that she had. They ripped into my roof air vent, through the metal, practically destroyed it to gain access to the attic. Yes, they're very cute and intelligent, but still wild animals, and you definitely do not want them inside your house because they can destroy your electric wires, your insulation, you air ducts, plus their waste has to be removed.

Do not bother will all these tricks that do not work, simply leave them some food especially dog food they love to crunch it and would leave you alone.

I like your approach David. The best deterrent is providing a better option for them. The only problem is that the constant supply of food might encourage more to hang out around the property. I agree with the video that we should never react with them.. so never let them see the food is coming from you.

Hmm I guess I have a different way of looking at things. I actually provide clean water for them every day and in large enough containers so that they can get in and enjoy water the way they like it. It's a joy to see the little babies when they come around, though mom is very careful with them and keeps them hidden away for the most part. If you could have seen the four babies up in the tree playing, or laying on top of their mom with their little faces pressed against their mother's face. Just precious. Or watch how careful she is with them. She'll spend a good part of the next year teaching them all they need to know to survive in this world. It brings me joy to watch them and goodness knows we've all taken away so much of their habitat. Granted it's not always convenient as they can get into mischief, but still the joy of just watching them far outweighs any inconvenience. Like currently one has started climbing up to my balcony deck and has taken a liking to the sugar water in my hummingbird feeders. So I'm trying to figure out a way to discourage them from climbing up there without harming them in any way. I had a friend throw pepper up my nose once in high school. LOL she wasn't the nicest friend I ever had. Anywho I know how awful that experience was for me, so it's not likely I'll ever do that intentionally to one of God's creatures.
