- This is not a compilation of the best theme songs but of the most memorable and universally recognizable. These are themes that are instantly recognizable, part of pop culture, most people can either hum the tune or sing the lyrics.

I grew up in the middle of all this. Each TV theme opening was unique and memorable; like works of art. It's amazing how different television has become.
Everyone keeps missing Little House on the Prairie theme song. I loved that show.

I miss Jim McKay. You hit this collection right on the head. Each one evokes a dozen memories. Great job.
Pretty good list indeed. They should make a CD with all the theme songs from back in the day. Some where very touching.

Dallas and Dynasty weren't included in this collection. I always thought Dallas was an iconic show.
overall it's a good compilation of TV theme songs. I didn't see them in the list but I do remember the theme songs from Barney Miller and One day at a time
At least you included my favorite one, Laverne and Shirley.
What about "Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Charles n Charge, Mr. Belvidere, Skipper, Leave it to Beaver, Dennis the Menace, In the Heat of the Night, Land of the Lost and Chips".
Happy Days was there.

The I Love Lucy theme that everyone is so familiar with is, is not the original theme when the show first aired, there was no theme, the show started out with cartoon characters of Desi and Lucy and then the introduction of the sponsor, then kind of a curtain would draw back and the show would start.
how i miss the moment when the whole family would sit together waiting for the showa to start... after all... those were our only source of media entertainment back then
You missed That Girl, Bewitched, Charlies Angels, Mod Squad, Streets of San Francisco,
Bewitched and Little House on The Prairie should definitely make the list. Still airing today....classics!

Three's Company aired from 1977 to 1984

Why were the 60s the greatest era of music ever, even including TV themes?
This was a great list, and I wouldn't take anything off (except for maybe 60 minutes), but it would have been neat if the theme to the "Wild, Wild West" made the list. I always thought it was a cool theme song. And perhaps "The Electric Company." Or maybe "Kolchak: the Nightstalker."
60 Minutes isn't even a theme song, it's a stopwatch ticking!
