  • A 6x6 vehicle with a mounted Howitzer cannon is unloaded from a C-130 onto the battlefield. An uncommon sight in the military world, the Nexter CAESAR self-propelled Howitzer brings its 155-millimeter cannon power to the French Military. Its crew of 5 swiftly take their positions, ready for action.
    With a deafening blast, the cannon fires, echoing across the rugged terrain. A target almost 40 kilometers away is obliterated, demonstrating CAESAR's unbridled firepower. As quickly as it arrived, it moves into a better firing position, traveling 100 kilometers per hour. It easily navigates the battlefield, showcasing its perfect combination of mobility, survivability, and firepower.
    Deployed to Ukraine as part of a French aid package, CAESAR is put right in the spotlight. This test is not just about firepower; it's about proving its mettle on a global stage. As it plays a pivotal role in combating the Russian invasion, the eyes of militaries worldwide are keenly watching…

    The Caesar is the sucessor from both the TRF1 towed auto-mobile 155mm 39 caliber canon and the AUF1 155mm 39 caliber howitzer on AMX30 chassis and not the old models presented. France was the inventor from the 155mm long range canon in 1917 with the 155mm "Grande Puissance Filloux", who was immediatly adopted after WW1 from the US Army and progressively improved up to the 155mm "Long Tom" M1A1 and M2, and later M59, some was installed on a Sherman M4 chassis called 155mm Gun motor carriage M40. Ukraine did design they own "Caesar" called 2S22 Bohdana on ukrainian KrAZ 6322 truck, project start in 2018 but ready to use only debut 2022 justebefore the ruzzian invasion, was use during the Snake Island battle, production was launched in spring 2023

    The CAESAR is designed with the French doctrine in mind of speed over armor. Doctrine of course largely influenced by the defeat to the Germans in 1940, and made all the more necessary with the post colonial wars that required flexibility and rapid deployment.
    The good point of that is that this piece of artillery works good in Ukraine, its mobility largely reduces risk, I think only 2 were lost to loitering munitions / FPV drones, and another one was hit by a drone but in the process of repair.
    Additionally, the use of a regular truck is excellent for logistical purposes, even though the artillery system in itself takes some time to produce, its vehicule is cheap and easily replacable.
    The huge black spot in europe right now is the shell production which is rediculously low.

    It's interesting how the wheeled platforms in Ukraine have overperformed, or simply got the better media coverage, their tracked cousins. CAESAR is a great example as is the Swedish Archer which is similar to Caesar. Both of these took the front seat to the more renowned Paladin and PzH 2000 heavy tracked self propelled howitzers..
    The other, and the most recognizable example is the HIMARS rocket system that became the hero and the symbol of the Ukraine War of Independence although his tracked cousin M270 MLRS can carry twice as many GMLRS guided rockets, is better armored and can traverse a much worse terrain than the HIMARS.
    One reason, and in my opinion the most important one, is the mobility. Yes, better mobility and speed, which allows the famous shoot and scoot tactics, is what contributes to wheeled platforms being more survivable on the battleground. Better armor means nothing if the counter battery fire from the 152/203mm howitzer finds you. And if you have a platform that can travel at over 100 km/h vs 70 or less for the tracked one, than this is the one you want to use..
    Another benefit is of course the price. Wheeled platforms are cheaper to buy and to use.

    • @LOLOVAL-os3pq
      @LOLOVAL-os3pq 6 месяцев назад +4

      as you rightly say, wheeled vehicles cost less to purchase and maintain, and they have other qualities, such as the ability to move quickly with minimal wear on the running gear, easier to move than machines on tracks, and it is easier to do 1000 km in a CAESAR than with an armored vehicle on a kennel which will not cope as well with traveling on the road (premature wear of the running gear and especially the tracks because of their enormous weight !!) tires also participate in ballistic protection, in Afghanistan, a French VBCI with 8 wheels hit an ied, 2 wheels destroyed but the VBCI was able to return to the base, a track, a track destroyed, it is almost impossible to repair it in a combat zone, unless you have suicidal thoughts in the event of a sniper in the zone!! LOL the tires also allow you to drive 100 km flat, a demonstration by Michelin in the USA, the technician drilled 20 or 30 mm holes in the sidewalls, the tires were still rolling flat!! these are reinforced sides!! unlike Russian tires, once punctured, they are punctured and can no longer be used!! for the mud in Winter, whether it's tires or tracks, they all get bogged down!! the tank even worse, it has a flat bottom, placed on the mud, there is a suction phenomenon, it can no longer come out, in addition, the ground clearance is lower on a tracked vehicle than on a 6x6 or a 8x8! some talk about the armor of these vehicles, and that the ARCHER crew is in the vehicle during the shots, but its armor is equivalent to that of the ARCHER 6x6, either STANAG 4569 level 2, or only against ammunition of caliber 7.62 x 39 (AK47) the 8 x 8 is barely more protected, STANAG 4569 level 3 or against 7.62 x 51! no big differences, but the ARCHER crew being locked in the cabin will not hear the incoming enemy ammunition shots (the characteristic whistle) on the other hand, being outside, we can hear what is happening around! ! for firing ranges: the Russian 152 mm carries a maximum of 22 km, the 203 mm carries a maximum of 38 km, the 155 mm carries a maximum of 42 km, or even 40 km in the event of a headwind, therefore, being at 40 km, we shoot at the Russians and the Russians will shoot at a maximum of 2 km shorter! so, in theory, if we place these guns 40 km away, they are safe from counter-battery fire, except from suicide drones or enemy planes of course!! the importance is precision, it is better to have 100 cannons that shoot far and precise than 1000 cannons that shoot short and not very precise!! LOL

      @SubvertTheState 6 месяцев назад

      What's that? Russia is pumping out 140,000 155mm Artillery Shells per month. That's more rounds than NATO will be producing every month after NATOs planned production increases in 2025.

      I mean trust me, I can talk all day about how awesome the Stryker ICV is. After all I drove them. But Field Artillery is called the King of Battle for a reason. It's still the most deadly weapon on the battlefield between land powers. Nobody really wants to talk about Russia's incredible pace of munitions production every month, NATO cannot possibly hope to collectively keep up, AND ship all of that ordinance halfway around the world. Then if it even makes it to the lines, will there be any adult males left in the country to shoot it?

      Wheeled (tracked Boxers are also a thing) these exceed 100km/h on the road and it is so far the only SPH which officially can fire while on the move (up to 30km/h).

      Currently drones aren't really a problem for CAESARS. they operate too far from the frontline for the vast majority of Russian drones to be able to reach them. And the few that remains aren't especially able to keep up with the constant fast relocation of those weapons so chasing them is nigh impossible. The only case in which a Russian drone can shoot one is if a long range drone just randomly encounter a Caesar moving around.

      Much faster on improved roads
      Crew comfort

      Ground contact area is a fraction of that of a tracked vehicle.
      Lower total vehicle weight(armor)
      Less crew survivability(less armor)
      Cannot operate on soft ground(soft sand, recent rain, plowed fields)
      Less maneuverable

      Higher total vehicle weight(armor)
      Higher crew survivability(armor)
      Maneuverability
      High speed on unimproved ground
      Able to operate on more surfaces
      Cons:
      Cost
      Complexity
      Crew comfort
      Lower field repairability
      Weight
      Special operator training required

    Cesar is an example to build cheaper artillery systems. In german military the artillery following close to the combat troops so they need protection for the users. That is reason for PZH 2000 and the new RCH155 systems which are quite more expensive but the security of the users are an main important point in the modern warfare.

    • @cotcotpouetpouet
      @cotcotpouetpouet 6 месяцев назад +2

      it's a choice, this protection requires tons of armor, it reduces mobility (speed and autonomy), which is also an essential characteristic to avoid counter-batteries and detection and attacks by drones

    • @tatalan750
      @tatalan750 6 месяцев назад

      If you shoot during you drive...no one can hit you...RCH155 could fire during driving and shoot 8 Granates in 90 seconds...little bit more as PZH 2000. If you change fire position every 2 Minutes...no counter battery fire will hit you. For example no one PZH 2000 was hit since they are used by Ukraine...only one was hit by a drone and is still in operation. If you hit a Caesar the most operator will be hurt and the open gun needs minimum longtime repairs. Cannon can be repaired or replaced by a new one but the user need years of training an experience to better protect them saves a lot of money.

    • @cotcotpouetpouet
      @cotcotpouetpouet 6 месяцев назад +1

      All these modern artillery systems have the same advantage over old systems: a very rapid “fire and go” principle, which is enough to avoid counterattacks by opposing artillery.
      The Caesar was designed in 1992, the PZH2000 in 2014 (and put into service in 2020), the RCH155 also in 2014, we are not talking about the same generation.
      Only 3 Caesars have been destroyed out of 18 deployed and intensively used in Ukraine for a year and a half, including 2 destroyed during the counter-offensive of mid-2023 (more risky situation), by lancet drones which know how to hit moving targets, so shooting while driving is not the miracle solution. The Caesar 8x8 provides "light" protective armor to save the crew and often allow the vehicle to be repaired, not against direct artillery fire (mobility and speed of deployment avoid this), but sufficient against most drones.
      Heavy protection has a cost: financial first (5M for a Caesar, 12M for RCH-155, 18M for a PZH2000), autonomy in the field (halved), maintenance (much easier on a truck chassis than on a heavy armored structure: half of the pzh2000 deployed in Ukraine are under repair due to premature wear, while other howitzers used in the same way do not have this problem), manufacturing time (where/when are the rch-155?), and in deployment capacity by aircraft (18 tonnes for a caesar, 39 tonnes for an rch155, 55 tonnes for a pzh2000).
      3 generalities:
      Armament is always a matter of compromise.
      Between the paper and the field we see big differences, practice in real conditions reveals what was the right choice.
      There is the weaponry dreamed of for the years to come, and that which is already delivered to the field when it is needed.

    • @tatalan750
      @tatalan750 6 месяцев назад

      @@cotcotpouetpouet PZH 2000 was developed in the 1990 and not in 2014. You are not under protection if you are in a fire position with a Cesar than all crew members outside the vehicle. The main point was the lower price, another kind of doctrine and the colonial history of France so they need a lower weight to transport the systems to Africa or in other regions. That is the same reason for M-777. You can produce every system cheaper if you produce more. In 1990 the plan was to produce 1500 PZH 2000 only for the Bundeswehr and around 800 for other countries with such kind of numbers the prices go much cheaper. The same about Leopard 2 tanks in 1982 was 400 prices produced in one year so the price for one was much smaller. That is now the problem with Ukraine we produce not enough and too many different systems so prices increase much because no one decides to produce one artillery piece in great numbers. Btw...PZH 2000 has been in service since 1998 if I remember right. right...

    • @cotcotpouetpouet
      @cotcotpouetpouet 6 месяцев назад

      Every manufacturer has a plan based on commercial estimates, but most are wrong, then it's a double penalty, the price goes up and they sell even less.
      Experience shows that the doctrine of use of caesar, archer, and other ultra-mobile rapid deployment artillery does not put operators at risk during the 3 minutes necessary for the operation (stopping, deployment, multiple shots, putting away and leave). What seems generally more at risk for soldiers (not only artillery operators, but also the troops they support) is having too few artillery systems (because of the cost, the possibilities transport in the country, maintenance difficulties) to press the adversary, and not being able to move them as often and quickly as necessary, due to their mass and lower speed.

      It was not meant to replace the tracked ones but the towed howitsers and it can be ready in much less then 1 min.
      Because it has so long range and MRSI and each has GPS it basically just need to lower the back spades and load there are no need to calibrate all the guns in the battery as people did in the old days (ww2 and Cold war) it dossent need to be off road as it sits in cover and hides get a fire missin goes out to someplace close by, lowers its spade and fires the firemission as its a 52 Cal weapon the flight time is so great that it can fire more than 1 mission then raise the spades and buck out to either the next hide or to restock ammo also in a hide then rinse and repeat.
      That means that it can stay on the road or very close to it and since its so fast on roads and it has so long a range that it can support many more fire missions with impunity.
      In the cold war era NATO never fired with less then 2 BTYs (12-16 tubes) at a time and preferred a whole BTN/REG (18-24 tubes) to get the effect that they wished for now a days they are much more effective with bonus , GPS rounds ect.... so you get alot more bang for a lot less money /Tubes., and they are much more mobile and have the range to avoid the counter battery fire.
      Also on that note since all guns calculate the fire solution themselves they are able to be spread out in a very large area so it will be virtually impossible to do counter battery missions against them cause they are not there anymore when the enemy are able to land shells in that area where they fired from.
      So yes the tracked ones are awesome in a 1 to 1 comparison but are really completly over kill if done correctly and a waste of money just look at the new german RCT 155 with a crew of 2 guys that can shoot while it moves and it is still a wheeled armoured vehicle with a 52 cal tube.
      The only real threat is drones and hipersonic weapons which no tracked vehicle can defend against anyway. so as long as you can keep those from the artillery then they are virtually immune to enemy action.

I can’t imagine you’d be able to put all that many rounds down range without at least cursory maintenance and upkeep, unless you want your mobile gun platform to shake itself into several useless pieces just from firing it more times than you should’ve…I dunno. Maybe I’m mistaken, or perhaps there are measures in place to mitigate the effects of the recoil that I’m not seeing or aware of… I’m certainly no expert, I’m just speaking on what I believe I’m seeing in the footage used in this video. Ehh, even if it is an issue, the Ukrainians have proven themselves to be more than capable and creative enough to come up with and implement any necessary after-market modifications that might be helpful or required. Edit: I’m referencing the 6x6 model specifically.. the 8x8 appears to be quite heavy and sturdy enough to significantly lessen the strain on the vehicle frame

      the CAESARs fired tens of thousands of shells, and the chassis did not show any particular problem, so, do not ask yourself too many questions on this subject, moreover, instead of a rigid system which would be more sensitive to shots, the 6 x 6 chassis is very flexible, which limits fatigue cracks, a rigid material will break more easily than a flexible material which will better absorb shocks and vibrations! a concrete example, today's cars have bodies which are not rigid but which deform during shocks, in the past, the cars were very rigid, at the slightest accident, the car did not deform and it was the passengers of the vehicle which took all of the kinetic energy, today, the car is designed to deform gradually, at the beginning a lot and as the sinking, the sheets deform less and less to limit the penetration of the obstacle into the passenger compartment! even the wheels help reduce kinetic energy! Obviously, there will always be a limit not to be exceeded, in terms of speed or weight or shape of the obstacle! a human body resists a kinetic energy of 150G, but over a very short period of time, on the other hand, in a combat plane, humans faint before 10G if the G lasts too long, a Rafale reaches 11G, it is the only one, sir or madam everyone will faint well before these 11G!!

      @@LOLOVAL-os3pq sure, of course I understand the benefits of flexibility where absorbing the stresses of heavy recoil are concerned, I only had to wonder because a truck chassis isn’t something I would ever usually equate with the quality of flexibility. If it happens to be that’s wonderful and all, but I couldn’t help but notice in the footage of the 6x6 firing, the entire vehicle lifted upwards and appeared to bow significantly in the process. Military engineers of any country are surely plenty smart enough to notice such a thing in testing before such a system ever hits the battlefield and would be more than capable of implementing mitigating measures of one description or another if and where necessary. I wasn’t saying anything bad about the Caesar system; if it worked well enough for Ukrainian warfighters in achieving their objectives, then I’m happy to leave it at that. I’m certainly not losing any sleep over it, just voicing an observation that made me raise an eyebrow or two.

      @@sadsciuidae3425 no, friend, you miss my point. I’m not talking about the effectiveness of the system as a whole or it’s battlefield capability. I just noticed in the video that the 6x6 version of the Caesar looked like it was doing its best to fold in half each time it fired, figured it might require heavier-than-usual upkeep and maintenance, and was wondering out loud if that was actually a real thing or not. I have since received the answer to my question, which is all well and good, but I feel the need to point out that it’s kindof hard to be mistaken when one is more posing a question than making a statement.

    Nothing about the problems they have, like its too light. So when it fires it bounces around, and throws off targeting.
