Ah I'm sorry. :) I didn't. I just heard someone mention it online somewhere. But it's totally possible that they got it from After Hours. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the show myself though. I always just thought it was a funny observation. (I don't know if the film makers thought that much about it)
People forget how emotional tear jerky the first 5 minutes is with "I Believe I Can Fly" truly is. A reminder of why Michael went into the foray of baseball and his Dad was killed the year before. The rest of the movie though is just a guilty pleasure of mine. But man the scene between Michael & his Dad had potential for a powerful biopic.
I still love this movie, even if it's bad: I started playing basket thanks to this, made a lot of my friends in my team. Also seeing Bird, Jordan and Murray at the Golf pit always makes me smile.
If it's a What The Fuck Hollywood movie, then it's gotta get a Snob episode. Who cares if Nostalgia Critic did it years ago? His review was only 8 minutes long. Brad can go full length and do a 20 minute review. Tear apart my childhood, Brad.
The only thing that would make this movie more 1996 is if Bill Clinton and Al Gore were at the basketball game and spilled popcorn on Bob Dole and Jack Kemp, as Newt Gingrich was being used as a megaphone
I think Space Jam is hilarious. But hey, to each his own right? I've always liked Space Jam. I mean... it's not the best movie ever and maybe it hasn't aged well but, I think it's good. It's not really a nostalgia thing, it's just I think it's a funny concept, and it's a wild ride. Sure it's not Rodger Rabbit, but it's still a fun sit for me at least.
That Mon*Stars Anthem was FUCKING UNREAL though... B-Real, Method Man, LL Cool J, Coolio AND Busta Rhymes, all at their prime, on the same song!! And then they had a track on the soundtrack where Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck RAPPING. And it was kinda awesome!
Best part of the movie is Bill Murray trying to convince MJ and Larry Bird that he could play in the NBA and they tell him that he can't. Bill to MJ "Is it because I'm white?" MJ: "Larry's white." Bill: "Larry's not white. Larry's clear." Best line of the movie.
Your comment that Space Jam feels like it belongs in the Bebe's Kid universe isn't that crazy since Bruce W Smith, who directed the animation in Space Jam, also directed Bebe's Kids. He was also the creator of The Proud Family.
I remember having the option to go to Space Jam or Jingle All the Way when it came out in theaters. We went to Jingle All the Way. Honestly not sure which was worse in hindsight.
I was six when Space Jam came out and I do remember watching it a lot. The theme song and I Believe I Can Fly are still great twenty years on, but the movie itself I haven't seen from start to finish in at least fifteen years. I would be lying if I said I have any intention of watching it again. There are so many movies from 1996 I will and have watched many times over the years but this isn't one of them. Congratulations of becoming a dad Dave!
I have seen this movie around 100 times. Every day after school my brother would put this movie on and then fall asleep half way through. I wouldn't notice he was asleep and would watch the whole thing.
I'm 34. I saw it in the theatre when it came out and couldn't stand it. It's been one of those things where I was confused where all the nostalgia was coming from. It was the Amazing Spiderman 2 of our generation.
I had the experience you guys had with "Space Jam" I had with "Shark Tale". Good lord that movie is SO fucking early 2000s and a hot hollywood cash-in mess, I truly regret eating up that shit when I was a kid and it came out. Other childhood films I saw alot of times, like "The Swan Princess" and "Flubber", while I see them with a critical eye, I consider them to be guilty pleasures.
shark take thankfully got forgotten since the same year shrek 2 came out and incredibles and after that dreamworks released madagascar and before there was shrek and ice age so no one gave a shit about it ..i own it on dvd...and the soundtrack cause I was 8 and I liked it....its really bad and you can tell they used their best animation people and writers on shrek 2 and madagascar so this film was left to die on its own..like how disney gave no shits about home on the range focusing on incredibles and chicken little at the same time and making home on the range feel like made for t.v. film
3:46-4:10 This reminds me of this exchange between Spongebob and Patrick in Battle for Bikini Bottom during the Robot Sandy boss fight- Patrick: IwannaplayIwannaplay! Spongebob: Patrick we’re not playing, WE’RE FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES! Patrick: _I wanna play, I wanna play!_ Spongebob: _Oh alright!_
I was a year old when this movie came out, and it was always one of my favorites. When Looney Tunes Back in Action came out, I didn't really appreciate it back then as much as I do now. It wasn't until early this year where I watched them both back-to-back where I started to see the other sides to both of them.
***** Stock footage of MJ from Space Jam. Steve Martin (the bad guy) was changing into multiple disguises, one of them being MJ saying "Let's do some drills."
I got the 'what the fuck were they thinking' reaction harder than any other from watching Lupa's Charmed review. That show made my jaw drop to heights I've never before known.
I went to a Fathom screening of Wrath of Khan on a Monday night and the place was PACKED and it was in WV of all places. People will see the most random classic films.
Back when they aired it, I watched Looney Tunes on TNT EVERY DAY as a child. That show left such an impact on me, and I would marathon classic Looney Tunes any day, all day.
I love this movie, corniness and all. It's dumb and a big commercial of the 90s, but damn is it a fun sit. I can sit down and review this movie with a critical eye, but I'll watch it as a fan. And Back in Action is still fun. And I'm still down with Space Jam 2.
theres more to space jam then people let on..its popular cause its meta first of all it pokes fun of itself and the brands all the time its fun with good animation and a great soundtrack and it melds the 2d and live action well...thats more then most films from that era..it stick with you...I can't name 10 american films from 1994-1997 that I remember more then this film...that pretty special to be a top 10 memorable film released in theaters for a 4 year period in hollywood history...heck it may be top 3 between 1995-1996...and top 5 over 3 years from 94-96 and a top 2 film from 1996 that i remember...its that crazy...this o scream to me is the 96 film I remember the most...I know independence day gets the smoke up its butt but that movie I never saw so..
This movie was also made at the time when sports stars and athletes from a lot of professional leagues have a huge hero worship back in the 90's. Which is why it's a product at its time.
Yes, they should make a Space Jam 2, but this time they should get Tim Tebow, since like Michael Jordan, switched from one sport to the other, that being football to baseball.
Not well acted, yeah, but i think the writing is ok. Only part they could have cut in my opinion is the whole rehab for the basketball players after the aliens stole their talent. I have watched it about a year ago and it still held up.
Bosko the talk-ink kid was actually in Space Jam. If you watch the scene where Yosemite Sam is about to shoot one of the Nerdlucks, you can spot the picture of Bosko hanging on the wall while Yosemite Sam was hopping onto the stage shouting “ We ain’t going nowhere!”
Definitely a guilty pleasure now, but I still like this movie. Takes me back to my 6th grade class when everyone was obsessed with it. On the other hand, the "30 for 30" episode on Space Jam is a comedy masterpiece.
I found Space Jam in the $5 bin at Walmart the day after the election, and I almost regretted not grabbing it purely for it's nostalgic value. Because I was 4 when it originally came out in theaters, I didn't see it until it was on VHS, but I remember liking it a lot at the time. I even had a Space Jam Babs Bunny toothbrush at one point. I'm pretty sure it'd be more of a so bad it's good thing if I watched it now.
"They made it for kids." I have to disagree. The Looney Tunes Show definitely isn't just a kids thing If they only wanted kids they wouldn't have modeled it after a sitcom. Also, yeah, Looney Tunes Back in Action is a decent Looney Tunes movie. It's underrated.
I'm not seeing the sitcom influences in Looney Tunes. If anything, it was more of a variety show with vaudevillian roots. Shows like The Flintstones and The Jetsons were the ones modeled after sitcoms.
Ryan Cox The Looney Tunes Show, not Looney Tunes itself. The Looney Tunes Show ran from 2011 to 2014. It was largely modeled after The Odd Couple with Bugs and Daffy living in a house together in a suburban neighborhood.
RaineV1 Sorry. It's just that they were talking about the original Loony Tunes cartoons made back in the 30's and 40's when they were talking about it being made for kids, so I assumed your comment was supposed to be relevant to the conversation. My mistake.
I used to watch these parody vidoes on youtube back in middle school, called "Kingdom Hearts Stupid FIles," based on the KH games. Now that I think about them after re-watching them recently, they really do not hold up that well, due to me having better tastes in humor as time went on.
I loved this film as a kid because I've never seen anything like it before, not even Roger Rabbit, only much later in life did I become aware of the movie's existence. When I saw Space Jam as a kid, the concept of animated characters in live action was one of the best concepts I've ever seen. Though, if I saw Roger Rabbit as a kid, I would've liked that a little more, since it's multiple characters, not just the Looney Tunes, from different studios, which I've always wanted to see as a kid and used to wonder why no film had done it. The only downside I would've had with Roger Rabbit if I saw it as a kid would've been that those characters aren't the main characters, they're just cameos.
Welcome back to the Midnight Screenings Dave! Other than changing diapers, I hope being a dad is going well... Never saw Space Jam. I'm twenty-one now, so it may be a bit late for me.
How did I miss this one? I didn't dislike it when I saw it as a kid, but I did pick up on the "WTF Hollywood" element. For years I thought we all collectively decided to not speak of Space Jam, but I learn it's actually nostalgic.
When I saw this as a kid, the first question than ran through my head was: "You want to make a career in Basketball and be the best NBA-player. And you already plan on quitting and play Baseball after that??? Something doesn't feel right with that line."
I recently saw SJ in a theater. The first time around, I saw it on home video. The Looney Toons were ok. The Basketball stars, other than Jordan (who is likeable enough) were hysterical. The worst part of the movie was the sexy lampshade masquerading as Grrl Power.
I Believe I can Fly was one of the greatest movie songs of 1996. It also had a sad message and a good beat at the same time. It left you both uplifted and conflicted. It was deep. Also I was not a kid when this movie came out. I was in college, but I still kinda liked it. Ah, Space Jam the video game clone! It was glitchy as heck and funny bad. :)
The purpose of this movie was to sell shoes. Or more accurate Michael Jordan is in the movie to sell shoes so that his shoes get marketing during Space Jam ads and Space Jam gets marketing during shoe ads.
I was 2 when this movie came out, and I don't know if I saw it in theaters. I think my parents got it on tape and I rewatched it after its release. My dad claims that this movie turned me into a Jordan fan as a kid, which he hated as a Knicks fan.
I'm still curious to see what Justin Lin is going to do with the sequel. It would be cool if they bring in the Animaniacs and some modern cartoon into the mix.
Yeah, I still consider this movie a guilty pleasure. It's totally fast-paced and batshit crazy but come on, It's Michael Jordan and the Looney Toons playing basketball against aliens! WOOO! :D
C'mon, Michael, it's game time. Slip on your Hanes, lace up your Nikes, take your Wheaties and your Gatorade, and we'll grab a Big Mac on the way to the ballpark.
Fun fact. Marvin the martian is the referee because he's both a Looney Tune and an alien so he's technically neutral.
Did you see that on After Hours? Not trying to call you out or anything, After Hours is great.
Ah I'm sorry. :) I didn't. I just heard someone mention it online somewhere. But it's totally possible that they got it from After Hours. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the show myself though. I always just thought it was a funny observation. (I don't know if the film makers thought that much about it)
Damn.
Marvin is secretly working for the bad guys... it was an inside job this whole time
HASHTAG SPACE JAM WAS AN INSIDE JOB
Space Jam is beyond stupid but goddamn it, it's so entertaining. Fun fact: Space Jam is the highest grossing sports film of all time
Rocky 3 and 4 and The Blind Side have it beaten, both domestically and worldwide I believe. Probably a few others as well.
It should've been BASEketball.
"This movie is more 90s than my wardrobe" my new favorite midnight screenings quote
Also, you ever notice how Marvin the Martian, who was both a Looney Tunes character AND an alien, was the referee of the game?
Mind Blown :O
I still love this movie, even if it's bad: I started playing basket thanks to this, made a lot of my friends in my team. Also seeing Bird, Jordan and Murray at the Golf pit always makes me smile.
I still love it too. It's just so cheesy and over the top that it's great.
Same. I grew up with the German dub. It alleviates Jordans bad acting as much as a dub can do^^.
No one says you can't.
If it's a What The Fuck Hollywood movie, then it's gotta get a Snob episode. Who cares if Nostalgia Critic did it years ago? His review was only 8 minutes long. Brad can go full length and do a 20 minute review. Tear apart my childhood, Brad.
Not to mention, that was before Nostalgia Critic really became as awesome as he got.
Well now I want this.
*pauses at start*
*puts Space Jam song remix playlist on in another tab at low volume*
...Go on.
The only thing that would make this movie more 1996 is if Bill Clinton and Al Gore were at the basketball game and spilled popcorn on Bob Dole and Jack Kemp, as Newt Gingrich was being used as a megaphone
You guys are way more nice about Michael Jordan's acting than anyone else.
Ebert said basically the same thing in his review.
Ironically, Siskel and Ebert gave the movie 2 thumbs up and gave 2 thumbs DOWN to Home Alone!
Sure it's not Rodger Rabbit, but it's still a fun sit for me at least.
i like space jam over the looney tunes back in action movie cause one film understood we like buggs more than daffy...and it was space jam
Is no one gonna talk about Danny Devito voicing the boss of the aliens?
That Mon*Stars Anthem was FUCKING UNREAL though...
B-Real, Method Man, LL Cool J, Coolio AND Busta Rhymes, all at their prime, on the same song!!
And then they had a track on the soundtrack where Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck RAPPING. And it was kinda awesome!
You'd think they would have used the Tiny Toons characters to fill out the crowd shots at the game.
Michael Jordan coming down the spaceship to "I Believe I Can Fly" was so fucking hilarious to me.
I'm glad you guys went. This is one of the most fucking SURREAL movies I ever saw.
when I was a kid I thought the Pulp Fiction reference was MIB I was 5 at the time.
Cameron Clophus me too😂
+Cameron Clophus I did too
I did too! And my dad thought it was Blues Brothers! I guess it's like mistaking Bill Murray for Dan Aykroyd
michael jordan playing basketball wih the looney toons? whats next? shaq is a genie?
Best part of the movie is Bill Murray trying to convince MJ and Larry Bird that he could play in the NBA and they tell him that he can't. Bill to MJ "Is it because I'm white?" MJ: "Larry's white." Bill: "Larry's not white. Larry's clear." Best line of the movie.
I think they cut that out of Tv airings
If that's true, that's *so weak*! UGH.
Honestly not sure which was worse in hindsight.
no brad's correct. loony tunes was totally for an adult audience.
Space Jam is one of the greatest drug fueled Hollywood made releases in the history of film. I'm okay if they give this a sequel
SO THAT'S IT? WE'RE SOME SORT OF SPACE JAM?
The movie was and always will be a guilty pleasure for me so I enjoy listening listening to their movie going experience, which usually entertaining
Welcome back Dave. Congratulations.
"It was made for 30s and 40s kids so you could do some FUCKED UP SHIT. " The way Brad says that 😂😂
I was six when Space Jam came out and I do remember watching it a lot. I have seen this movie around 100 times. Every day after school my brother would put this movie on and then fall asleep half way through. I wouldn't notice he was asleep and would watch the whole thing.
Space Jam is still in my top 5 favorite movies. I'm not sure where in that list it lies but its there.
I'm 34. I saw it in the theatre when it came out and couldn't stand it. It's been one of those things where I was confused where all the nostalgia was coming from. It was the Amazing Spiderman 2 of our generation.
EVERYBODY GET UP, IT'S TIME TO SLAM NOW!
I had the experience you guys had with "Space Jam" I had with "Shark Tale". Good lord that movie is SO fucking early 2000s and a hot hollywood cash-in mess, I truly regret eating up that shit when I was a kid and it came out.

I like how Brad implies that the Mighty Ducks exist only as a cartoon and that that cartoon gets its own cartoon universe.
Sincerely,
---That guy
Because mentioning the cartoon clearly means that I only think it exists as a cartoon. Don't be that guy. :P
HE'S FIXING A DIVOT!!
That line always stuck out to me as a kid. I thought it was hilarious
3:46-4:10 This reminds me of this exchange between Spongebob and Patrick in Battle for Bikini Bottom during the Robot Sandy boss fight-
Patrick: IwannaplayIwannaplay!
Spongebob: Patrick we’re not playing, WE’RE FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES!
Patrick: _I wanna play, I wanna play!_
Spongebob: _Oh alright!_
COME ON AND SLAM
AND WELCOME TO THE JAM
Brad. Please make a playlist of all the WTF Hollywood! Snob episodes so we can enjoy them in ALL their splendor!
My favorite part is that the plot line involved Mike quitting and playing baseball... Because that actually happened and it still seems hilarious
this was my favorite movie as a kid and I didn't notice how insane it was until I was a teenager.
I was a year old when this movie came out, and it was always one of my favorites. When Looney Tunes Back in Action came out, I didn't really appreciate it back then as much as I do now. It wasn't until early this year where I watched them both back-to-back where I started to see the other sides to both of them.
Lakitu1134
I don't really like Back in Action, but I love the Michael Jordan cameo/joke.
Space Jam is probably a worse film but in my opinion, Back in Action wasn't as entertaining to watch, dare I say, nearly boring
*****
Stock footage of MJ from Space Jam.

"It.Is.A-live!"
-Bill Murray
Brad and Dave were probably sober when watching Space Jam and that's not the best way to watch it after the late 90s.
To kid me, Wayne Knight was always Nedry from Jurassic Park.
I LOVE that this is what you took Dave to and not Arrival or Hacksaw Ridge.
This movie was also made at the time when sports stars and athletes from a lot of professional leagues have a huge hero worship back in the 90's. Which is why it's a product at its time.
What are the chances they re-release Back in Action?
idk if it's the fact I was probably 5 when Space Jam came out, but I still love this movie. Or maybe I just have an odd taste.
I saw this for the first time in theaters a few days ago, and I honestly think it's pretty good.
Come on and Slam! And Welcome to the Jam!
I watched this in theater in Belgrade when it came out. I remember almost everything that happens in space jam even tho I haven't seen it since.
Yes, they should make a Space Jam 2, but this time they should get Tim Tebow, since like Michael Jordan, switched from one sport to the other, that being football to baseball.
ginnrollins211 in the end he converts all the toon to Christianity.
Nice to see so much of Dave again lately!
It's still a good movie, for some reason people like to hate on it.
FinalplayerRyu It's fun to watch and the animation is amazing, but it's not well written or well acted in the live action parts.
Not well acted, yeah, but i think the writing is ok. Only part they could have cut in my opinion is the whole rehab for the basketball players after the aliens stole their talent.
I have watched it about a year ago and it still held up.
Probably because they don't think it's a good movie.
Conceptually, it is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of... I don't know the execution ends up, but goddamn does the concept seem dumb.
Dude I enjoy this movie, and I can't call it good.
For what it's worth, if not for this movie, Futurama wouldn't have the episode "Time Keeps on Slippin'."
Very true.
Heh, loved that episode :)
Definitely a guilty pleasure now, but I still like this movie. Takes me back to my 6th grade class when everyone was obsessed with it. On the other hand, the "30 for 30" episode on Space Jam is a comedy masterpiece.
I love that you guys know enough about Looney Tunes that you can name drop a deep cut character like Gossamer.
Wayne knight steals this movie
Hell yeah. His moments are some of the funniest parts.
We'll pick up a big mac on the way.
Bugs. Bugs . We got Bugs here.
See? Nobody Cares.
Come on, Michael. It's game time! Lace up your Nikes. Grab your wheaties and we'll grab you a Gatorade and Big Mac on the way to the ball park.
I found Space Jam in the $5 bin at Walmart the day after the election, and I almost regretted not grabbing it purely for it's nostalgic value. I still like space jam, not as much as before but still kinda like it, the monstars soundtrack is kickass!

By the way, congratulations, Dave!
I know right now that the Midnight Screenings for "Monster Trucks" is going to be the best Midnight Screenings EVER!!!!!
I ain't care, I got Space Jam on blu-ray and love that shit.
No one says you can't. Don't be so defensive.
...I'm not? It's hard to read tone online though.
'Twas the first Blu-ray I bought, it was!
th3mdt Yes it is
When I saw this as a kid, the first question than ran through my head was: "You want to make a career in Basketball and be the best NBA-player. And you already plan on quitting and play Baseball after that??? Something doesn't feel right with that line."
Ah yes, the film that spawned a thousand furries. Me included.
Disney's Robin Hood did it for me, but this movie reinforced it.
I recently saw SJ in a theater. The first time around, I saw it on home video.
The Looney Toons were ok. The Basketball stars, other than Jordan (who is likeable enough) were hysterical.
The worst part of the movie was the sexy lampshade masquerading as Grrl Power.

Bugs Bunny would never get help from anyone. If this film was more true to the Looney Tunes, it would've been a 7 min cartoon.
I just watched it on TV and while some of it didn't age well, but I really enjoyed it! :D
recently rewatched space jam. enjoyed the shit out of it
Oh yeah, the 90's. I remember that. Before everything was shit.
It's time to hoop! So shoot, baby shoot!
As a time capsule of the 90's, i can watch this movie. As a movie on it's own......just watch Looney Tunes Back in Action
I'm just glad this movie helped spawn one of the best video games of all time, "Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden".
That gag was really funny when they were injured on the bench
And also very sad.
I saw it in the theaters way back then too.
That guy getting his body pumped after being flattened scared the crap out of me as a kid lmfao
Well it was this movie's 20th anniversary. Not everybody (or even some cultural touchstones) ages well. That is why we have makeup and film editors ;)
When I went to the rerelease of Pokemon: The First Movie, there where 20 years olds and kids in my screening.
Now I want to see Brad review Bosco the talk ink kid cartoons.
The purpose of this movie was to sell shoes. Or more accurate Michael Jordan is in the movie to sell shoes so that his shoes get marketing during Space Jam ads and Space Jam gets marketing during shoe ads.
Dated or not, will always love this film. Got Doug Walker to sign my copy of it at a con this year :)
I watched this movie at least 20 times between the ages of 4-8. I haven't seen it since. Not sure if I want to see it again.
Dave - For those think Space Jam held up over the years you are are-
Right!
Dave - *WRONG!*
AW MAN THAT'S BOGUS!
If anyone feels like going back 20 years, check out the movies website. It's still up, never updated.
I certainly don't LOVE this movie as a movie, but as a piece of nostalgia it is invaluable to me.
