  • In today's digital age, information moves so fast that its rapid nature is basically one with contemporary culture. There is so much content, that even in one entire lifetime you wouldn't be able to consume even half of it. Things move so fast, and are so self-referential that you can barely keep up. Yet, somehow we do.
    In this episode of sunfish, I try to document the current state of the internet-- and why it's so overwhelming to many.

    dude this could've been a tedtalk or a short college lecture or something 😭 this is seriously impressive and it was very comforting to experience the internet through the perspective of your video essay

    This video not only feels like a perfect explanation on the overwhelmingness of the modern day internet, but it does it in a way that resists the tropes of that same modern day internet culture. The longer time stamp is proof in the pudding on it's own.. and I love it. Feels like I'm watching a pre-zoomer RUclips video.

    • @dtwebpage
      @dtwebpage  Год назад

      well, tbf there's quite a few instances of incoherent zoomer editing in there 💀
      the script is 4000+ words long so that explains the length

    funny you posted this in the middle of my internet detox month lmao, i've really realized that i'm way happier and fulfilled with a limited amount of internet exposure rather than mindlessly scrolling only to feel worse than i did before.
    Of course, i'm insanely grateful for social media allowing me to fight isolation during ~a certain pandemic~ but there's definitely a balance to find.
    I really hope your video encourages people to think about what the internet is bringing to their lives and to be more purposeful with their use of it! :)

      i really wanted to bring home the point of nuance. social media is always either just presented apathetically or like it's the devil

    someone said this but you’re really good at kinda of summarizing a lot of thoughts. I have always thought about this stuff too, especially the short attention spans, and just wanting quick quick quick. idk if you enjoy researching stuff and making videos like this explaining stuff if you do you should definitely go forward with cause its really impressive. i cant even write a paper like this to my prof 😭(pls still solve the rubix cube)

      the script is like 4700 words long and a some of it _is_ cut, just for pacing reasons

    Thanks for putting three seconds timer in a video as it reminded me that I watch everything at at least 2x speed and that made the whole video more poignant

    Honestly, you just described exactly the way I have been reflecting on internet usage and people behaving on it. It makes me feel relieved from some of the study research that you have mentioned, that our lives are heavily influenced by social media and the way I have been speculating about it, but anyway it is an awesome video and a very nice watch hahah 👍😁

    Hi, Dylan! Finally got to watch this video, it sure took me some time but I eventually got there haha. I just love how you ended it on a positive note. I feel like this type of narrative is very rare online (not exclusively online ofc). Also I adore those uhh intervals with titles and sunfish logo on a wall, I love this style of editing and I don't see it used that often. And the logo is so subtly included! Love love love love it. Genuinely surprised you didn't punch the camera this time though. I was kind of expecting it...
    Anyway! Great video! Can't wait to see your next one.
    much love 💕

      i definitely like the internet more than i don't, so that's why i wanted it to be more positive :) (as it can often be the opposite)
      the wall logo light was so clutch!!!!

    i think the prominence of the vine boom came with its renaissance as a meme itself. i want to believe it was prank channels or other children’s channels that over-used the sound to the point of ridiculousness. absolute silliness.

    • @dtwebpage
      @dtwebpage  Год назад

      i think so too. a lot of today's memes are just that-- a mockery or acknowledgement of the absurdity/ridiculousness of any given property.

    As someone who's in his late 20s, I always knew as I was growing up and going through the internet was both a scary and exciting time.
    I was taught to be careful online at an early age, and not to reveal who I am, where now, for a lot it's just the standard.
    I remember as a kid watching RUclips in 2005 of "let's plays" of my favourite video games.
    I saw the evolution of Facebook and Twitter and how Reddit grew and changed.
    Nowadays, with how much stimulation there is, even I get caught into the cycle, but I'm old enough to know that I need to take a break and go do other things, not only for my mental health, but for my physical.
    Amazing video man, I hope to see and hear more from you. :)

    this video was just, really great! i've been thinking about this same thing exactly for like, probably months now lol. i think im more afraid of what the future holds as the internet and technology just continues to further integrate itself into our daily lives! literally everything is at our fingertips and it feels... helpless and out of our control! i think AI in particular is also something im pretty weary about. being an artist (who is trying to hopefully live off of art.... hahah) in a world where a computer can just. generate art with absolutely no thought or emotion put into it is so scary! sometimes i think about the fate and longevity of my art and my passion for it and while i'm gonna do everything in my power to keep it in my life sometimes i just cant help but think about AI replacing artists and running them out of jobs and livelihoods :'0 sorry this ramble isn't Really related to the video's main subject but it made me think! i could talk about this for eons lol. once again great video and awesome script and editing too!

    • @dtwebpage
      @dtwebpage  Год назад +1

      thanks :)
      i realize i didn't touch on AI, but i'd probably come to the same conclusion that it's all 'too much', and we don't know anything about it. i know AI 'art' seems like it'll take over everything ever, but i'm holding out hope.

    I feel you were very good at covering a lot of issues in this video. The fact that u adressed the nature of social media with such accuracy in ur opinion even if it was scripted is great to hear. I feel many ppl don’t want to talk about these issues for whatever reason they don’t care, they’re silenced, etc. But u spoke out about issues such as overstimulating media, a small bit about politics, briefing on Richard dawkins, social media, body issues, etc. While also keeping this entertaining but serious.
    It’s impressive to me and how broad you can be with ur humor but with serious subject matter that means a lot to you (also I love at the end how u just rambled and needed to take a breather at the end lol). Once again I hope to see more of these reflective videos in the future that hopefully will ‘influence’ people in a positive way (or at least bring a perspective to different sides of an argument, and I also hate the word influencer because it makes creators sound like puppet masters).
    Hope to see more of these in the future and that u follow ur dream in a way u want that will hopefully bring a sense of peace for u in some way. Side note: I WAS SO HAPPY THAT U INCLUDED EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE I could ramble about that movie for fucking ever 💜💜💜. It includes humor with amazing art visuals and existentialism and nihilism and I LOVE IT. Anyways ramble over, keep doing ur shit man can’t wait to see what u do next 👍.

      i honestly thought it was *too* broad, like i talked about a lot of stuff (with many tangents) idk if other videos will be as long, but it was lots of fun!

    i have legit no idea how i stumbled upon your channel, but the production quality of your content is absurdly high considering you don't have a huge following. i haven't listened to someone this articulate in a while, and I really could not agree more with your analysis of this rapidly increasing phenomenon. keep up the good work man, excited to see what else you put out
