  • Growing up on the third floor of a Tokyo apartment building, halfway across the globe from the skateboarding mecca of Los Angeles, Yuto Horigome quickly built himself up as one of the best street skateboarders in Japan. Not satisfied, he moved to Los Angeles as a teen all by himself to chase his dream of becoming the best in the world. But little did he know he would prove it not in the US, but back in his home country... at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games.

A father who introduced him into skateboarding and taught him techniques, a family friend who mentored him, a best friend / rival who accompanied him everywhere in his youth, and a world-wide journey that helped him hone his skills, win recognition, and introduce him into the culture? Yuto is literally a shonen sports manga protagonist. And I think that's wonderful.
    EDIT:
Then we get a comradery with the most dominant skater in the world, the Olympics itself where Yuto's dad steps out to avoid jinxing his son and prays for his victory at the old bridge where he once brought Yuto to skate, a reflection of reputation and propriety and the fight for respect, an impossibly thin margins for success, and a glorious run to victory. You can not make this up.

As a skateboarder who has seen the progression of the sport from the 80s and 90s 00s till now, it is great that is is now accepted and kids who want to express themselves in this way now can and also have a future. When I was young skaters were seen as burn outs who would amount to nothing and this was not true but labels hurt and it is good to see change.

I just clicked on the video and it blew me away. I never thought I would watch a whole documentary of someone I didn't know and of a sport I'm not familiar with. You did amazing with the storytelling and explaining. ❤ I'm definitely more interested in skateboarding and the way you described the concept of skateboarding and Yuto's journey is amazing! 😊

Can't believe this is only sitting at 100k views man, this is one of the most gripping and investing documentaries I have ever watched, and I had no prior knowledge of it. I walk away with newfound respect and wonder for the sport and inspiration to push myself harder. This is truly a work of art, thank you.

I've been seeing this video suggested to me for months and put it off thinking it would just be another poorly put together slideshow with annoying commentary. BOY WAS I WRONG. This was amazingly well done! Awesome story and you told it perfectly! Great job my dude, you have serious talent for this.

12 seconds in and I cannot agree with the statement that the contest was not possible due to an alleged "pandemic". The contest was not possible because of the RESTRICTIONS! And a cough and a law are two very different things.

Im 3 months late seeing this video but only 10 minutes in I'm hooked. Never skated in my life other than pushing a board around and falling more times than not as a kid but truly appreciate and respect the art and world of skateboarding. Dropping a like and Sub and getting back to the video. Thanks for this banger my guy!

My heart wears such a huge smile after watching this. I was a little late finding out about yuto. I found out about my guy about three years ago. Kelvin hofler… when he came out onto the scene I was so hyped. I’m still hyped when I watch him skate. Same with yuto and all the other talent coming out of Brazil and Japan. These two countries are so very humbled which is why they are destined for greatness and prevail on top. I absolutely love what the people from these areas of the world have and will continue to contribute to skateboarding!! 🙌🏼🤙🏽
