6:40 Slavery existed in ancient Egypt. Though no citizen of Egypt could be a slave. It was not an economy supported by slavery. Some prisoners of war were their slaves. Interestingly, they also branded their slaves too.

North Africans were even raiding European shores enslaving people from Ireland, England, France and other European countries for up to 300 years and selling them in North Africa and Asia minor.
My point is that back then it was never done on the basis of race. It only became racial after the Catholic church committed sacrilege and approved it to mostly Germanic nations. Slavery was wrong, but from a historical prospective it was meant to be done as a defeat in war. But it was changed and done down racial line which was due to cowardice. It was after the Swahili leaders requested Oman Arabs to help them from the yoke of occupation that the latter fought and ended the Portuguese occupation, and ended the slave trade. However the Portuguese stayed in Mozambique and continued slave trade. I am not sure why Oman Arabs didn't fight them there too, but my guess the African leaders didn't make a request or they had interest the occupation and slavery to continue.

The British later campaigned to stop slave trade, because economically it wasn't attractive particularly with automation. This is the divide and conquer version of history spread by colonial powers. You can tell this version because it puts Ethiopia as a beacon of civilization of Africa and it denigrates Islam. That is because Ethiopian rulers considered themselves settler mulattos descended from the people of Sheba and therefore superior to indigenous Africans. They identified with white colonialists, and Ethiopia was a major supporter of the British colonialists. That is why parts of Ethiopia were not colonized. When it comes to slave trade, Ethiopian Kings of the Amhara and Tigray sold those tribes they considered of not white or Jewish extraction such as themselves. These included the Oromo and the OMO tribes of Ethiopia. After slavery was banned, the last ship of Oromo slaves, bound for the Americas, was captured by the British navy off the coast of South Africa and unloaded. Their descendants still live in South Africa.
Just as a correction, Oromo's were initially considered as Habasha by the Amhara/Tigre due to the phenotypic similarities to the northern people and were not sold in to slavery. Instead, they were oppressed for not thinking of them selves as Habesha. I mean the real version of the story isn't much better, but accuracy is really important. The people that were targeted for slave trade were the ones that were broadly known as 'shankla'. They primarily lived around the Ethio-sudanese border.

There were customs and traditions guarding the rights of slaves/indentured servants. Indenture was mostly towards payment of debts.
At the expiration of the indenture, the indentured slave/servant was free to go home or to make his place of indenture his new home. They would inherit all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of members of the community, could marry wives and start a new life.
Some of them would end up marrying one of the daughters of their masters.
I am Igbo and I grew up in the village. In the 1980s, one titled chief with multiple wives and children in our town, one day parked his whole family and left for another town. As a child, I was wondering and asked my dad what was going on.
My dad told me that the man's father or grand-father came to our village as an indentured slave and settled afterwards and that the children had forced him to move back to their ancestral homeland. My father proceeded to give a list of many other such families and gave me lecture on the long-faded indenture and other customs that had existed.
People that committed crimes, were either asked to make sacrifices, banished to the temple/shrine to serve the gods under the chief priest, banished from the community or killed. There was no prison and no chattel slavery. Banishment was for life.

But we said: We are doing an act whereas Allah's Messenger is amongst us;
why not ask him? So we asked Allah's Mes- senger ﷺ, and he said: It does not matter if you do not do it, for every soul that is to be born up to the Day of Resurrection will be born.

There's nothing that says the black people should be discriminated against. The prophet taught the Arab is not better than others. People attain higher status through righteousness not by color of their skin.

I researched Islam and I read the Qur'an myself so I know what it says and what it teaches you only know what someone else tells you if you haven't read with your own eyes. Did you know the Qur'an was revealed within a 23 year time span ? Did you know Arabs were pagans before Islam and worshipped Idols? Did you know they had African and Arab slaves already before Islam? I noticed the numbers that you receive in regards to the truth of African history and all of the history that surrounds Africa and related to africa. The numbers that you're getting here on RUclips I think is extremely low, it makes no sense to me that all of this important realistic and factual an educational information would provide such low numbers. Whenever a white man with a British or european accent decides to narrate the story with his own bias opinion or interpretation I don't care what he says he studied and where he studied it from. in 1624, Oman was finally able to expel the Portuguese colonizer that had arrived over a century earlier. After expelling the Portuguese from Oman, Imam Nasir was able to chase the Portuguese fleet on the Indian Ocean and defeat them along the East African coast. Thereafter, with its sophisticated and capable navy, Oman became a bulwark against European machinations on the Arabian Peninsula and across Indian Ocean trade routes.
The East African leaders requested Oman to expel the Portuguese and remove them from enslavement and brutal occupation.
Why should the East African leaders request help from Oman Arabs, if as claimed by Dr. the latter were involved in slave trade per the capacity described. They could only ask and their request implemented only if they had close relationship with Oman Arabs.
Portuguese occupied East Africa, built forts such as the largest one, Fort Jesus in Mombasa, and slave ports across the East African Coast. During their occupation they took as many slaves as they could without freely without any major opposition. It was like fishing in the open sea. Today Brazil has the second largest population of African ancestry, than all African countries except Nigeria.
Ironically the likes of the Doctor, don't mention this history! Why is this kept silent. Why not in discussion of East African slave trade mention the Oman Arabs fought the Portuguese Occupiers , defeated, stopped the brutal occupation and slave trade?
Colonial history and even prior to that has been most frequently written from the perspective of the Western colonial powers or Christian Missionaries. Thus many don't get the truth.
The white missionaries know when an African scholar talks most Africans will believe. Thus we have seen many in the comments have believed blindly to false information. Same tricks used during Trans-Atlantic Slavery and colonialism. Why not use their own to spread propaganda, create enmity between Christians and Muslims, curtail Africans to become Muslims etc.?
It is imperative readers to develop critical analysis and thinking. Question the information shared, do independent research from different sources and perspectives and have an open mind to accept what might be against our world view. Only then will get out of victim mentality.
The interactions of Africans and Arabs has been going for centuries, with new or shared civilizations; thus African ancestry in Arabia doesn't mean was mainly by slavery. Also with Islam many slaves were set free as it has a system of gradual emancipation, and some verses that command free of slaves as one of the options.
Scholars have an obligation to research widely, and not as the Dr mentioned one or two sources, and only share the truth.

It is imperative to do more research on slavery as it was a global phenomenon that was practiced by the powerful in most all parts of the world. My reply hasn't referenced much of other sources so as to make this as short as possible.
Pointing to a race or a religion with the intention to bring conflict between races and religions, and to shift attention of the inhumane Trans Atlantic by Christian Slave Traders against mainly Africans is distortion of history. Similar agendas in the 20th century resulted in a genocide of innocent Muslims in East Africa. Titles such "Arab Slave Trade" are indicative of a similar agenda.
Unfortunately the talk is propaganda against Islam, and at times the speaker's expressions indicate this false belief, which has squeezed out independent critical thinking and analysis much needed in an intellectual discussion.
It is missionary colonial propaganda, which isn't backed by substantial evidence. The late Professor Mazrui talked about this in his documentary: The Africans, A Triple Heritage. A much recommended researched documentary so as to understand history in an unbiased way.
Slave trade and slavery was practiced globally for centuries even before Islam, and even by the powerful Africans against the weaker ones.
A map with a title "Trans-Sahara Slave Trade" so as to get the reader to think of similarities with the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. While it is debatable if human beings moved as slaves in a very vast extremely hot and harsh desert routes as explained from the map can survive.
River nile is down flowing from Ethiopia and Uganda through Sudan to Egypt. Does it make sense the Slave traders to sail to East Africa against the strong stream, which has a couple of massive water falls? Then they sail back over the water falls towards Egypt!
An Oman Muslim saved Africans in Uganda from a king who had ordered his own to be killed. African slavery by Africans was practiced by strong tribes against the weak tribes. Some of the strong Africans captured the weaker tribes and took them to ports in Mozambique, and were sold to Portuguese slave traders.
Nzinga Mbemba who wholeheartedly embraced Christianity and became King Alfonso I of the Congo in 1506, and with the aid of Portuguese firearms, he expanded his kingdom and provided 3,000 slaves to the Portuguese each year.
Today Brazil has the highest population of African ancestry after Nigeria.
