Gran Turismo 7's Always Online Requirements are Unacceptable

  • For all those who love the experience of being inches away from the finish line on the final lap of a race in single player only to lose your connection to the server and get kicked back to the start screen, REJOICE! Daddy Sony has artificially contrived almost the entirety of Gran Turismo 7 to be held at gunpoint by your internet connection... HOW FUN! Sony just told everyone who cant access or afford a good internet connection that they can all hit the bricks! Doesn't it feel good to pay $70 for a racing game that is never truly yours and that a massive corporation can yank out of your hands at the drop of a hat? "PLAY HAS NO LIMITS" except for all the unnecessary and artificially-imposed limits...

It was then that I realized that they pulled the oki-doke on us. With only 1 area open, It immediately fell to a 5 out of 10. After noticing you cannot sell your cars or their upgrades... 3 out of 10. Now, I wish I saw this video before I bought it because I'd still have $60+ tax. Don't bother - even on sale. Your contempt for these anti-customer practices is appreciated and shared by all of us, though we would personally cast blame onto Sony as opposed to Polyphony. The developers are at the mercy of their publisher, and as history has taught us, it's the publisher who typically forces their developers to implement loot boxes, microtransactions, and always-online drm. This is probably the situation Polyphony finds themselves in with Sony, especially considering that Jim Ryan has more-or-less confessed his personal disdain for videogame preservation and thus has a clear motive for forcing GT7 to require a connection to a server that Sony could turn off whenever they want!

I foolishly made my assumption as I still drive and enjoy gt5 & gt6 even though support ended years ago. I’m a fool. I’ll be looking for an unapproved work around solution to extend the life of my investment or should I cut my losses and sell the brand new, unused PS5 now. We’re really sick of the fallacious “online is future” argument as well; I mean, global warming/climate is the future too but that doesn’t mean it’s good or that we should just accept it! While polyphony did technically put in the always online, the decision to include drm, like the decision to include microtransactions and loot boxes, typically comes from the publisher, not the developer. Sad to see GT7 needs DRM for single player stuff. Now we are going to see what will happen to Gran Turismo Sport since GT games servers goes out quickly when a new title is released. If they don't do like a last update for offline save, then all my time and energy spent on GTS will be gone. I pre ordered GT7 since I'm still hype for the game, but most likely will play for a little bit and collect dust since I don't want to put a lot of time and energy on a game that on the future will be gone.

    • @dankswank9088
      @dankswank9088  2 года назад

      Completely understandable; it makes no sense to invest progress in a game if that progress will be stripped away and impossible to recover after a certain point. That said, a final update to the game also won’t really undo the problem since the update is also dependent upon an internet connection. Sure, it will initially solve the problem, but considering PlayStation’s tenuous relationship with preservation (the potential shutdown of the psp and ps3 stores serving as the most recent example), we may still be in a “the game will someday be all but unplayable” situation. Unlike if the game was shipped with the offline functionality burned into the physical disk itself, the dependence on an offline patch means that all it takes is the patch being delisted from the psn for us to be back where we started, and anyone lucky enough to get the patch prior to the delisting have to hope they never absent-mindedly delete GT7 to make space or that their console never needs to hard-reset at any point in the future...

  • @risingdragon8886

    Sorry, i don't know about others but Polyphony has just absolutely destroyed what once was a great game. I played GT since GT1, 2, 3, 3-Aspec, 4, 5 prologue, 5, 6, so i've played pretty much every single one excluding GT Sport which was the first to do away with offline sinlge player campaign. To me, GT Sport wasn't even that good in terms of car physics compared to previous versions anyway, what was good about that one was the FIA approved races, thats it. This DRM bs, online only crap, paid subscription to play other portions of the game is killing the franchise off. This is just my own opinion, i may be just a few out of a small minority who think this, i don't really care what others think or say to be honest. I see this happening with NFS 2015, where they took off the servers for that game offline, so anyone who bought that game cannot even play it anymore, the reason why gamers buy games is to simply to enjoy them in their own free time whenever they feel like it, we paid for them in full price. The thing is, nowadays, we pay for games which have DRM's, are online only, but fact is we don't really own what we bought & paid for, this will slowly kill off this franchise, i see a lot of other companies like EA, who have done this with NFS 2015, and i know a lot of people who weren't very happy that EA decided to take NFS 2015 servers offline indefinately. Maybe i'm wrong about GT7, i hope i am for other gamers sake. If Polyphony & Sony entertainment go down the same route as EA in regards to their NFS 2015 game, then this franchise is as good as dead imo. I don't really see much of a future for Gran Turismo at this point.

    I did say that GT will lose a lot of offline player-base due to this but you have to realize, the only group PD listens to the top split drivers in GT; meaning from now on forwards, GT will be revolved around an online multiplayer game. Tbh the AI, licenses and career mode I may find boring if not challenging. Every new racing game coming out will end up requiring network connection let alone will probably have an online system that will be utilized.
    MY issue with GT right now is since GT Sport was badly executed, my worry is that they learned nothing from the last game and they’ll butcher the absolute hell out of this game with the online. Still 16 player lobbies, we need ACTUAL DAILY RACES and not WEEKLY races, dynamic weather and time of day is on select-tracks (my thinking is world tracks will have that as the fictional won’t), and the graphics isn’t a big deal for me but looks nothing improved from the last game. Still lots to unfold but if people closely followed GTS instead of completely waiting till GT7 you’d know why lots of people was never on the hype train to begin with

You only start the single player part to get free cars and money to start your collection, but as soon as you got the majority of Gr3 and Gr4 cars you can ditch it and focus on the online part... I don't see an issue with requiring a constant connection, but I see an issue with it not being clearly stated as a requirement.
    They implemented this for anti-cheat reasons, not DRM. It is to protect the save games from being modified. If they didn't do this, someone could and would modify the save game for unlimited in-game currency that they didn't earn or purchase. This could then be carried over into MP, which would be a huge problem for maintaining the integrity of competitive MP racing. If the game were only SP, then I would wonder why it needs an always on internet connection, but it isnt.
    Also, it is a misconception that software is every actually "owned" by the consumer. Software has always been licensed for use, not ownership. It is stated in every terms and conditions agreement.

    • @dankswank9088
      @dankswank9088  2 года назад +1

      A few things here:
      1. If Sony really had an issue with people artificially boosting the earnings of their save games, they wouldn’t have included in-game currency that can be bought with real money. Sony is perfectly fine with people getting an unfair advantage; they just want to make money off of it.
      2. Just because something is written in a EULA doesn’t mean it is actually contractually binding or legal. In fact, many people have argued that the game industry’s purported assertion of players owning only a license infringes upon consumer protections and private property rights, along with other infringements based upon the captive nature of the game audience (you don’t have any option to buy an offline version of GT7).
      Regardless of what Sony or Polyphony claim as the reason for it’s inclusion, it is DRM; it’s software that, intentionally or not, acts to inhibit manipulation and duplication of digital media by the end user.

      It always about making money. They are not alone in that. It seems that almost every game these days has an option to purchase in-game currency with real money, but that is another issue entirely. Yes, the need to maintain a connection to a server does effectively as a form of DRM. But isn't every console game already protected by nature of it being on a console?
