This is just fabulous, and it's a wonderful way to experience this opera, especially with the projections. The orchestra deserves the spotlight. Would love to see CSO do it here in Chicago. The Lyric Opera probably can't afford to do a full production, but that's just the reality of the present time. This opera deserves as many performances as possible.

C'mon, Folks...you can carp all you want about this-or-that voice, or this-or-that tempo..but this presentation was a FABULOUS achievement..an opportunity for the world to hear THE MUSIC...in all it's magnificent, unbelievably complex, garish and exquisite glory...LIVE but without the burden of costumes, make-up, lighting, scenery, blocking..allowing the singers to concentrate solely on the music and their emotional delivery of same. Amazing, and greatly appreciated. LR

A heartbreaking moving music starting at 30:00 after Baraks words "O happiness over me and expectation, and joy in my heart", when he thinks, that he will become a father. A tremendous performance, a fabulous cast. I can't imagine a better one actually. It's really world class. I enjoyed everyone very much, especially Anne Schwanewilms as Empress.

A Fabulous performance overall indeed, but I must say I was bowled over by Merbeth's Färberin!! A great portrayal! Amazing how her voice sails the murderous tessitura with such ease, assurance and the right character! Kudos indeed. Also Jorowski's reading, although on the fast side, holds the continuity of this very difficult opera amazingly! Loved it all!

You're correct. The camera work here is awful. It gave me motion sickness.

Schwanewilms has too small voice for this part which almost requiers a dramatic soprano with unusual high extension and stronger high notes than heard here. Merbeth was a better Kaiserin some years ago before she moved to dramatic parts despite being a spinto, here still doing a decent job without too much wobble.

You are 100% correct about the Kaiserin. Even though Strauss specifically designates it as a jugendlich role in the cast list of the score, it really is a full hochdramatisch part rather than a dramatic coloratura as some RUclips commenters have stated. Schwanewilms is not and has never been up to the task. Interestingly, the Amme, while listed as a dramatic mezzo-soprano in the score by Strauss, was created at the premiere by Lucie Weidt, a hochdramatisch. I saw Anja Silja in the part at San Frabcisco in 1987, and I was astounded at how well it suited her voice.

I agreed with you until I heard Schwanewilm's performance of the Empress a few years ago at the Metropolitan Opera. I was stunned by the size, the volume, of the voice. It was huge, unforced, and pure, and her acting was stunning. I reminds me of voices like Gundula Janowitz, who I also thought had small Mozart sized voices, and then learned that she sang Elsa in Lohengrin. You have to hear some people live to understand the true nature of their talent. Jurowski was also the conductor, and Kerl sang the Emperor, - fabulously.

i attended two of those performances at the met years ago. the principals were almost the same as here, except the barak and wife were reuter and goerke. the weak link in the cast was komlosi as die amme. schwanewilms was wonderful as the empress. it’s not a huge voice but it’s very focused and penetrating, the very high and ethereal quality so apropriate to the role. it’s not a dramatic soprano part - studer was one of the best in the role in recent years. unlike the farberin, you don’t need a brünnhilde to sing this.

Jurowski and the orchestra are good. But almost the entire case is tragically overparted.

Unfortunately you are correct. A concert version from Netherlands is far superior to this. It is available on You Tube. Not perfect but preferable to the wobbles in this iteration.
