When Common said his mom picked out Nas and Rakim as good rappers... Common's mom was a School principal, she dealt in Education and intellect on a daily basis. Real recognize Real.
They got overlooked by so many other artists, and they are from Atlanta as well. 3 years, 5 months and 2 days in the Life Of... is a classic album one of my favorites. @hiitsme3039
That's when I started listening to a lot of College radio...and heard a lot of incredible music that they don't or won't play on corporate radio, and that felt good.
Facts & an active member. I freestyled with Common on 79th during the filming of The Corner video while walking to his trailer. Kanye scary ass was petrified in his own city & the guys from the Ickes was threatening him. I got kicked out of school that day🤦🏿♂️😂
@@WOUNDSOFPASSION Common was a 4CH from 67th & Champlain. He said he was a gang member, but never said he was 1 of the Moe’s. He rocked with the multitude though. He has mad interviews talking about being a 4.
@@WOUNDSOFPASSION But he’s a 4 from Champlain. I know Common from 87th bro. There’s no 4 set none through 87th in the Chatham area. The only 4’s in that area are on 92nd & cottage grove in the row houses. Other than that the 4’s on 84th & Dante. The other 4’s are further east, which isn’t Chatham.
They need to understand something when we say a conscious rapper that doesn’t necessarily mean one who speaks positivity all the time. Nor one that wraps about knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. When we say conscious, we speak of the one that didn’t allow the record labels to use them against their own community! The ones who brought great music with the message without selling their soul to the industry. Those are the ones we speak of when we talk about being conscious rappers!!
Glad someone else remembered that the word "woke" was specific to Black nationalist thinkers in the 60's / 70's and not a new term that popped up 5yrs ago.
Disconnect is also related to the way music is consumed today. Started when radio became corporatized and hyper segregated. Then streaming combined w headphones was the final nail. Music is no longer shared - it's a solo experience now.
Facts… remember walking into the park on a hot summer day in the hood and u can hear the baseline to krs-one step into a world from a mile away. I miss when everybody blasted the hottest rap records.
That and the end of the mixtape era was also a nail in the coffin. Sometimes a song had to be hot on the mixtape circuit before it hit the airwaves. Even Common's B in You blew up on a Clue tape.
I agree but I also think the amount we are forced to consume is what is hurting people’s taste. There is so much you have to dig through a pile to find 8 connecting bars that are fire. All these rappers are feeding us one-liners.
Sooo goood bro. I’m 46 and was in high school listening to these dudes so this episode was for me. Thank you. Math you a king bro love your work and your passion for hip hop shines through. Salute.
If Math was still battle rapping I'd love to hear what they would say about his cutoff jorts...Real talk though, this Pete Rock/Common album is the most anticipated of the year for me.
Ice Cube and Dre are a good starting point to look at, because they literally dissed Black conscious emcees on their albums. Even though Cube later joined the NOI himself. But, it had already been put out there. BUT, people skip over the fact that we had a rebirth and a renaissance with the Soulquarians. Common, Mos Def, Kweli, Dave Chappelle, Bilal, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, D’Angelo, Q-Tip, etc etc etc all the way up to the point of KanYe and Chappelle Show and Peak Common and Mos Def doing Movies hit. JayZ jumping on with Dead Prez and Busta Rhymes. Freeway with Mos Def and Kanye. The early to mid 2000s was a resurgence that still impacts us to this day. Black Thought is on TV, Mos Def is a trailblazer, Chappelle is The GOAT, Kweli has People’s Party, Kanye is a legend, Common is a movie star and still a respectable emcee, etc etc etc

as of a couple weeks ago I’m 27, had these guys music and many from that era available my whole life they helped shape the person I am now. Thank you to my parents first and foremost but thank you Pete Rock and Common. Hip Hop has never not been there for me.
Common’s “Like Water for Chocolate” album is a legendary masterpiece.🔥🔥🔥🔥 As was CL & Pete’s “The Main Ingredient” album. I’m very much looking forward to this collaboration with him and Pete. Now if we can only get a Nas & AZ album….🔥🔥🔥🔥
There’s a difference between being conscious and being aware. You can be aware of your surroundings, but, still not take the time to be conscious about your part in it or your contribution to it or your responsibilities within it. Just knowing what’s around you doesn’t mean much, if you don’t act on it. Knowledge isn’t Power, Applied Knowledge is Power.
Honestly we need mentorship in hiphop. Just read Joey Bada$$ started one for black youth to explore the arts and it's a brilliant idea. I'd love to see the Commons and Pete Rocks of hiphop mentor alot of these new kids to get their bars and content up. 👌
Lil Uzi and Yachty and them were trolling at the time. They knew what they were doing, riling y’all up. I seen Lil Uzi breakdancing in the club like a Rocksteady Crew baby. His early raps full of 90s references. Social Media turned Culture into a big comedy show. Everybody just want to get their jokes off now, nothing is ever serious. Taking anything serious or taking offense to anything now is seen as an L. They wanted the reactions they got. 69 exploited that to a brief period of viral chart dominance
I respect what You stated!! Common & Pete are both GEMS!!! They make each others art & talent come more alive!!! They are both super nice without each other, but when they work together, it's A BEAUTIFUL THANG!!!
Shoutout to Common, mannnnn! When he started talking about the action design that he was a part of on John Wick, that was dope! And as a Stuntman (7 years in), I felt that! & Respect to Pete Rock, Math, & the Crew too!! ✊🏿✊🏿
As soon as I saw the title I clicked on it immediately! I can't wait to cop the album. This is legendary in the making by two cats that are already legendary in the game. Love the shout out to #soulsofmischief !
We should have been stronger..... Together.... "They" turned our power against us.... Helped us destroy ourselves and our homes and families..... The age gap was somewhat natural as those who grew up with hip hop entering the 40s and above there was a natural slight separation. But more importantly from the older side of the coin we grew up with a much more diverse landscape of music. Ice Cube's whole Street Knowledge way of kicking it was a good balance of "gangsta" and "conscious" hip hop.
S/O to Pete for mentioning arrested development, they don't get their shine in the hip-hop space 💯

Conscious was the evolution of the word woke. Originally, it was woke. Especially in the 60s and 70s. Conscious was our hip-hop version.
Glad someone else remembered that the word "woke" was specific to Black nationalist thinkers in the 60's / 70's and not a new term that popped up 5yrs ago.
Yea, conscious was synonymous with Knowledge of Self(KOS) all the way back to Earth Wind and Fire. The vibe changed when woke came back as a trend.
