Concerning the small vs large form, botanists DO recognise them as separate plants, but they DON'T recognise them as different species or subspecies. They recognise them as within the natural diversity of Monstera deliciosa. The reason why we as collector consider them as different plants come from the way our plant began their journey.
Early collectors took seeds or cuttings from the wild and planted them in private collections, botanic greenhouses or even gardens in the tropics.
Each single plant established itself in a different location. The small and large forms have been massively propagated and became the the two standard clones cultivated in the western collections. The 'Brazilian common form' is neither a small or a large form, it's just a different individual that was took from Mexico and planted in brazilian gardens. The compacta is neither a small or a large form, its another individual, collected and kept mainly in asian private collections. "Burle Marx Flame", the sierrana and the Hawaiian clone are other individuals, took from Mexico and kept in collections.
Since the small form is the most common and the easiest to bloom, most seed grown deliciosa and most weird mutant/variegated deliciosa are small form, because all those seeds are inbreed from a single individual with little genetic variability.
Since large form is still common and large plants bloom on a regular basis, you have also some quirky large forms. And since both grow almost feral in south-east Asia, you can find a lot of indeterminate weird plants popping from asian collections.
If you go to the forests in Mexico and Guatemala where you can find wild Monstera deliciosa, each plant will be wildly different from one another and you will have the same conclusion as the botanist: there is no borsigiana or something, just highly variable individuals, like in humans.

Wanna add that in Canada and the US, the majority of seed grown Monstera are actually large form. Every single plant in the garden centres and hardware stores these days are large form and have been so for the past 3-4 years.

@@miramar1504 You are absolutely correct on that. The ones we have here in North America are large form. The small forms I have yet to come by here in the US. I feel small form is more popular in the UK and mainland Europe.

Just wondering if the burle marx flame has been genetically tested to confirm it is not different enough from a deliciosa to be categorized separately from the normal variation in the species? It’s not confirmed where it was originally collected and the leaf shape and structure are pretty different and really apparent in the juvenile stage. I just got the flame and feeling the two leaves is like night and day compared to the little bit of difference felt between the small and large form. These plants are so fascinating, the more I learn about them the more I love them

So happy you brought up the fact that Thais are large form! I have a beast of a Thai that I got from a local collector that was moving out of state. He never poled it so it grew for years in more of an outward/wide shape. He had propagated the plant a few times, so this thing literally has FIVE “arms” growing from it. It’s over 7 feet wide, and I literally wouldn’t be able to move it through a door in my house 😂 it’s most recent leaf it put out is 34 inches long. I wish I had a way to show you a photo of this thing!

While other types of monsteras are small leaf climbers.

Thanks for mentioning the deliciosa large form. I’ve been watching videos and Facebook posts laughing when people talk about how big their deliciosa is, when it is in it’s pot on a dining table or in the corner of a room!
My dad brought a monstera deliciosa home from his company many years ago on the back of a low loader because it was too big for the company’s reception area. It lived a totally neglected life in my parents living room. There are two picture whole wall windows so it had plenty of light. It was ‘trimmed’ multiple times, was supported by hooks and wires across the ceiling and eventually filled the whole ceiling of a very large room. It had aerial roots 4 metres long and leaves a metre wide. I wish I had a photo of it, it was awesome.

The mint you showed on the image originated from Aroider Barry Schwartz near Tampa Florida. There are other forms of "mint" as well that have the regular MD shape. His genetics typically are sold as "mint NoID" these days. The one you labeled as Mutation is known as "Lace Prismatic" in SE Asia and Japan. There are also more dwarf forms other than Kunzo's "Compacta" cultivar.

Great video again, Kaylee 😊 I've read in different fb groups about monstera creme brulee and monstera white tiger and I wanted to know how you (and everyone else) think about both of these. I thought it to be just a fancy name for more variegated species?

Sooo I live in a 800sq foot apartment… and I have a cutsie little Thai. It does have large large cream sectoral variegation on every leaf, (5) and I definitely didn’t consider just how big it would get. 😅 I knew they get big big but between my albo and Thai I’m gonna need a house SOON 😂❤

Yellow Marilyn has to come from Kunzo or have documentation going back to him as it’s his sport, much like white monster. If it’s not from him it’s just an aurea.

The Brazilian common form seems to be rather an intermediate than an actual large or small form. Similar to the NoID mint

I grow both the large and small forms of Brazilian M.deliciosa.
The small one tends to climb like M.borsigiana, and the large form tends to behave like the regular large form of M.deliciosa.

It's goofy to say their aren't variations in genetics that determine sizes within the same species. It's wild people even tried to claim there are not and got mad at you for it. There are standard poodles and mini poodles. They are both poodles. They are just different sizes and we call them different things based on that size difference. Small form and large form plants makes total sense. Being the same plant species does not mean their aren't perceivable, measurable differences.

Afaik the internodial space is way smaller for large form monsteras. For borsigianas it can be normal to have about 5 cm between each node, whereas large form monsteras have 1.5 cm max (at least what I've found so far 😊)
