- On December 30th, 1980 the Trail Blazers found themselves down by one with just one second remaining on the clock. The inbounds man, Kermit Washington threw a picture-perfect alley-oop pass to Billy Ray Bates who put it up and in to stun the Philadelphia 76ers, 109-108, at the Memorial Coliseum in what is still one of the most improbable finishes in team history.
I was 15 years old, Living in Vancouver Washington, Listening to this game and remember screaming throughout the house over this play. . . Good stuff
What a pass and what concentration by Billy Ray!
I remember the audio clip of this play in the opening for many radio broadcasts.
Same here! I always listened to Blazers broadcasts right from the start of pregame just to hear this call. Always made me smile!
RIP Bill Schonely. Mr. Rip City.
I saw a G.
I've seen it all.
Dope describes my rhymes, making all you emcees cold drop like dimes. You know MCSC is back again, and battling me on the microphone is like committing a sin.
Scott/MCSC
Even the great dr j. Julius erving is absolutely stunned.
Philly has 2 nightmares
Portland with Billy Ray Bates
then Toronto with Kawhii Leonard
How long was Billy Ray with the Blazers?
Sixteen games (and playoffs) in 79-80 plus two more full seasons. Still owns the highest scoring average in Trail Blazers playoff history (26.7 ppg). An amazing player "nobody's ever heard of."
Executed just like Dr. Jack drew it up! #RipCity
Maybe Dawkins should have been under the basketball with Caldwell Jones?
The fallen Black Superman. So sad. 😔
