Billy Ray Bates was able to do extraordinary things for the era he was in, and capable of even more had he been a little more focused, consistent, and of course these 3 reasons we’ll talk about never happening. As a youth in the 60s, his days were spent picking cotton for his family’s survival and gathering lumber, which he credits to giving him his NBA ready body by his senior year in high school and his athleticism he’d later become known for, that allowed him to attack the rim like Russell Westbrook with the body makeup of Lebron James. His season stats in the NBA may not impress you, but when you look at the amount of minutes he did it in I’m sure it will. Like the 11.3ppg average as a rookie in just 14mpg. As a second year player averaging 20mpg he averaged near 14ppg. What he was known for is his playoff performances hat doubled when he was given substantial minutes, that showed he could’ve been a star in the league. Instead he had to go overseas to the Philippines and became a superstar to say the least. He was even enshrined into their Hall Of Fame. If talent only meant success was given to you, Bates would be one of the best players ever, because naturally he was that well put together for the game of basketball talent wise. But he wasn’t and here’s why. Stunted Growth.

I lived in Oregon as a young kid during Bates' time there. I loved him. He was awesome on the floor and he seemed like such a nice lovable character. He was always smiling during interviews and commercials. I remember during his last year, the team was struggling and would miss the playoffs, but after a rare win, he did the postgame interview and he just screamed out "We are going to win some more games for all of you!"
How can you not like a guy like that. I heard rumors that he was stupid and had problems, but I was too young to understand. It's too bad he ended up the way he did.
Lots of players during that time were selfish one on one guys. I think he definitely would have had a great career if it wasn't for his addictions.
Despite all of his problems, I can't help but still like the guy. I really hope he is ok now.

This man Bates was bad ass on the court. When he played but never knew if you could count on him. If he actually tried to work his game vs work on partying who knows what would of happened.

I spent some time with him in 2020 and he is so humble and kind hearted, he has been robbed so many times in life because he passes out drunk and the ppl around him would take his stuff, i was blessed to feel his energy and hear his storys

I'm 58 and started watching the NBA in 1969. I don't remember this guy, the name doesn't even ring a bell. Nice video though. Super talented
Watched him in Lugano Switzerland (he was playing for Olympic Fribourg) ca. 1984-1985. About 50 in attendance in a gym the size of your average junior high school's in the US (aka: great seats). He tore it up anyway, by far the best player on the court. Unforgettable dunks, like a man among children.

I was good friends with Billy Ray’s cousin and the three of us hung out a lot during the summers . He loved to drink that muscadine wine man . When his mom passed he never recovered from that and started doing the coke . Which ruined his nba career. We never lost a game at the park ( he took every shot ) . He once scored over 100 pts in a high school game .

We have to acknowledge our cultural problem. Too many of us are destroyed by the toxic environment that Blackistan is. And by the time stamp of this mans life it's a problem at least 60 years old.

Embarrassed DJ chuckled and said I'm going to need help ." Russell laughs and says that's right. " or words to that effect. I thought it would be on here but when a man with such enormous talents sinks so low it's as if what others saw in him he couldnt see in himself that's the alcoholism compounding some low self esteem. I also thought youd have his 4 backboard breaking rim shaking you cant ignore me cba play into post houston blazer second chance. Dr. Jack an ocd basketball coach saw a God and couldnt mold him into a team structure which is when a more refined and coachable Calvin Natt took his place. Now CN was really good but BRB was a super man but his mad powers were not under control. You watch these old clips and you see the cringe factor of his defenders like oh no here he comes again I cant stop him. Take another look. He earned his jail time but if he runs the 12 steps one day at a time he ll get what's left of his alignment problem straightened out. Man on a pogo stick no lie.

I never really thought of him again but soon as I seen this video I knew exactly who he was. I didn't know his story so this was very informative.

I was 6-1 ht about 205 , so I through one down. Just a one hand of one leg slam, then they said do it again and it was clapping and happy and
Then I threw down a two hand jam off the vertical. Why did I do that? Man I had to throw down my whole arsenal of dunks before I could go and I told him man I'm tired
Reverse dunk, 360, Dr J ocean wave dunk, throw off the backboard dunk, cuff the ball dunk, gorilla dunk like Darryl Dawkins
But before I pooped out all the way they asked me to play with them, they didn't even want to play a serious game just want to see me dunk and just let me go down the lane.
They had a dunk fetish now this was the time you know Michael Jordan was only like a two-year NBA player and they were seeing all the games. And of course who wasn't mesmerized by Michael Jordan Dunking?
They was real cool man, great memory of my time over there. Occasionally I'll pop through there again but most of the time I kind of went around the other way because I would have been late getting home to the meal my girlfriend prepared me. And she was good at making lumpia and chicken a double!

Good video I first heard of Billy Ray when I would go to a coworkers house. He told me the story of Billy Ray when he came to Portland and how he was referred to as Black Jesus and how he had a great playoff run averaging like 20 but unfortunately some things derailed his career
I grew up rooting for the team he played back home in PH. He was a monster on the court. He was one time tandemd with an import named Michael Hackett. They were unstoppable!!! I didn't know he had vice issues. I hope he turns to the Lord!

Booth instead came to italian league. He was insanely good. Italian league was good test but he averaged around 30 a game and what was most amazing was his smooth and effortless style in doing it.

Ir was not Keith but David Booth I remember here play. Forner DePaul blue demon. Here he actually looked like one: 38.8 per game and a 56 pts season high. He took Oscar Schmidt's jersey in Pavia and performed as well as the brazilian legend. Not an easy task.
