    Anna is, thank God, still alive. Kate sadly passed away in 2010. Anna is at the piano in this clip, Kate plays the accordion. The sisters and their sister Jane McGarrigle have made the world a better place with their superb music/poetry. They may not be well known among the masses, but their art will last. They belong to the abolute top of North American music. God bless them.
    They made me happy for 60 odd years..

      @UCKkWvrqZbDI_kwR5ovxLJzA Sorry, the wording was badly chosen. I meant song. This one is still played. Dion is not. Point in case is, however, that it was a one-hit wonder thing. A francophone friend of mine had the LP but this one song stood out. I remember there was one other song, not bad, but the remainder of the album was run of the mill. Like Chuck E's in Love and Dreadlock Holiday. Just one song on the album that's any good. Quite different from Santana, for example. But then again, I am not a folk music fan at all. Just this one song.

Gee, what ever happened to the talented fella, anyway? 😬
      I saw so many epic performances in The City. I'm now in rural Vermont, a short drive from the Canadian border. French people would not sing it with this charming québécois accent (the song is in fact not really known in France). Plus, Anna is rolling the r à la québécoise, which is a bit different than people used to do in France before. Your comment made me realize that l’accent québécois is a real part of the musicality of the song.

    A great 1976 hit song from her 1975 production album then released it January 1976 from the sisters Kate & Anna McGarrigle from Montreal, Qc. Canada. It is quite very rare that a french song became an international hit even it was not a big worldwide hit. I remember in that song has been modified in the 1984 Bye Bye (Dominique Michel & Pauline Martin) modified that song for funny side. But as a young child I thought that was a 1984 hit song, but in reality it was a 1976 hit song. Just love it :)

      It's well worn story about life in general - the words of the repeated refrain couplet;
      Y a longtemps qu'on fait d'la politique (We've been in politics a long time)
      Vingt ans de guerre contre les moustiques (Twenty years of war against mosquitoes)
      are an oblique reference to the seeming futility of raging against those in positions of power?
      Many of the other lines mention everyday activities, such as taking the dog for a walk on Sunday

      I have literally never heard “Canadian” and “Cajun” in the same sentence before, never mind applied to Montreal musicians. Is that a phrase you’ve heard about them before?

      @@SiriuaA I figured. I’m Acadian. We come from Canada. Cajuns are our expulsed ancestors who live in places like Louisiana in the US. The roots are the same. The cultures are very different. I’m very protective of my Acadian roots. The history is rich but the expulsion that led to the Cajuns is painful. But they have undeniably better PR.

    The lyrics are complete and utter rhubarb! But its a pretty little number and harmonies that go off in some nice unexpected directions.

      The lyrics are probably better than most of the US/UK pop rock production since the 50s.. et la rhubarbe, c’est très bon.

    Could anyone help me with this: Joan Baez is supposed to have commented quite UNkind in her biography of 1988 on her cooperation with the McGarrigle Sisters - the book has no Index. Does anyone know the details ?

      If you're talking about her '87 memoir "And a Voice to Sing WIth," wouldn't that predate their collaboration, which took place in '95? Anyway, my edition of the memoir makes no mention of Kate nor Anna.

    • @bechamelmucho

      Ça dépend toujours de ce que l'artiste peut et veut produire. Certains québécois et canadiens français chantent comme ils parlent, avec leurs accents locaux. D'autres préfèrent le faire dans un language plus neutre qui rejoint plus d'auditeurs. On entend bien l'accent gascon de Francis Cabrel. C'est la même chose pour beaucoup de canadiens et plus particulièrement pour ceux qui ont grandi en parlant aussi anglais. On retrouve aussi plusieurs anglophones qui ont adopté le Québec et qui chantent principalement en français. Voilà. J'espère que ça vous éclaire un peu.
