    Had a 2015 Civic with CVT. Honda did all the service but never changed transmission oil. At 115,000 miles, transmission failed. Repair estimate was $8200. Replaced the car, but not with a Honda. Also have a 2018 HRV. Much wiser about these CVT deals. Appreciate the video. Off to get the parts to perform the fluid change.

    I just had a recall on my wife's 2016 HR-V with CVT and not only is all well, Honda has extended the transmission's warranty to 150K miles or 7 years. There is a procedure for checking for metal filings in the transmission sump with an external magnet plus upgrading the software. The whole procedure only took about 45 minutes because no problems were found. My dealership has found no bad transmissions, so far. I'm happy.

    This is the perfect video! Just changed the fluid on my daughter's HRV. It looked pretty clean at 47000 miles. That stuff' is messy! It tends to splatter everywhere when draining. I drained it for about 1 or 2 hours, and I got exactly 5 quarts out. (It just filled a 5 quart engine oil jug,) So I put back in 5 quarts of Honda CVT2 fluid. I then started the car, selected all of 'PRNDL' positions, turned it off and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I then checked the fluid level and it was right on! I then about 1 teaspoon drained out!

      I wouldn't even open the filler bolt if you put back exactly what drained out, and you used the right fluid not like this guy. I'm more curious about Honda saying you have to re-map the transmission from the sound this guy heard.

    I wish you would do more videos on Harvey, how's he doing any updates etc. I love them but I have to disagree about using non-Honda fluids. On the packaging they may look better but with Honda you don't have to worry. All the additives are tailored to the specific type of systems in Honda vehicles. Not saying it will for sure, but it's possible that using another brand could cause premature wear to internal moving parts, O-rings, and gaskets. But I'm a Honda fanboy, I love using all Honda stuff lol.

    I enjoyed your CVT fluid change video. My wife and I are seriously considering an HR-V for her next car. My biggest concern in the HR-V is the CVT transmission. A CVT transmission has a lot of sliding parts that require good clean lubrication to give a long service life. The CVT is the primary reason we are not buying out the lease on her 2018 Outback. Subaru does not have a scheduled maintenance on the CVT other than inspection (probably just for leaks). The fluid is considered “lifetime” and the transmission is sealed. From what I understand, some dealers are very reluctant to change the fluid upon customer request. No fluid is lifetime. I am looking forward to seeing you change the filter located inside the bottom pan of the HR-V. Subaru has a SMALL cylindrical filter only accessible by cracking the transmission case in half...in other words NOT serviceable before a complete overhaul. I clicked your subscribe button. Thanks.

    • @jstinsley
      @jstinsley  3 года назад

      This car is VERY serviceable. I now have 63k on it which is getting in the range that the 2016’s seemed to have CVT issues. Hopefully my aggressive service schedule will pay off!

    • @MrGarfield4
      @MrGarfield4 3 года назад +1

      @@jstinsley hopefully so. CVT’s scare me due to the inherent design. Too many sliding parts that require a good lubricant. At least Honda has a maintenance schedule and provide for replaceable filters. I am afraid to say that I think we are passing on the HR-V due to the CVT transmission and going with a Mazda CX-30 which has a conventional torque converter 6 speed automatic. Thank you for your reply.

      It might void it. If you use the Honda Genuine HCF-2 you should be alright though. Keep records. This is my first automatic, and I was scared to mess things up, but this video was an awesome resource. (Harvey's rear diff vid (AWD) was great too. I've changed that too, with the Dual Pump II per Harvey, without incident.)
      My experience (YMMV): I did my car's first CVT change last fall at 34k (did not do 'break-in' change... didn't know it was a 'thing'), and more than 6 qts came out. Factory overfill? When I refilled, I filled it to the overfill point (took 5.5qt), closed it all up, did the gear cycle and reopened the overfill plug, and there was still a signifigant drip. Even so, I put the last 1/2qt in.
      It's been 11k and everything seems nominal. There was a little but not crazy debris on the plug when I changed it. Wiped right off. I did not change the filter. Next time, I definitely will.

    Hi there. Does Honda hr v cvt transmission come with filter? If yes where is it?

      Yes. There is one in the pan and one behind the fluid warmer. The next time I change the cvt fluid I am going to change them and make a video.

      FYI if you go buy them, Honda calls them strainers.

      @@jstinsley thanks. I have 2017-2w lx canadian model with 73000 I never changed the transmission oil because is it still on warranty and I guess they call the service at 90000. It looks to me too much far away especially because sometimes when I switch from neutral to reverse and even in drive mode I full a little kick . So should I change the filters too?

      @@enrico5232 I plan on changing mine the next time I change the fluid (that will be at 75K Miles). At that point, I'll look at them and decide how often I want to change them going forward.
