Great list! My list: 4. Alien Romulus was a slick well directed movie with a great zero gravity sequence. 3. Oddity was a creep fest, unnerving with a great simple premise that delivers. 2. Longlegs crime mystery horror that was engaging with an unexpected ending and explanation. 1. Strange Darling was a gripping chase horror (more so a gory thriller modern day Film Noir esque) with a twist that had an outstanding lead. An Oscar worthy female performamce. Very memorable role by Willa.
MY Rankings are as follows 1:Longlegs, 2:Alien Romulus, 3Strange Darling, 4:Maxxxine, 5:Blink Twice, 6:Infested, 7:In Violen Nature, 8:Trap, 9:Cuckoo, 10:Tarot, 11:The Watchers 12:The Strangers Chapter 1,13:The Crow (I didn't see Stream, Afraid, or The Exorcism)
It’s always fund to see these mini rankings a few times a year, especially in a year ripe with horror; I realized after watching this that I need to dedicate time to things I haven’t seen rather than watch my old reliables.
Top 2 of the year so far are le vourdalak and the devil's bath. Every other movie i've seem pales in comparison to those two imo. I did love oddity and longlegs a lot. Haven't seen strange darling or cuckoo yet, very curious about those two! I'm expecting great things!
Maxxxine was good, but definitely the weakest of the 3. Kind of felt like a massive after thought in the trilogy. Which is weird, because he likely had it planned before Pearl...Pearl ended up being the best film objectively, which is crazy since he just thought it up during lockdown
It was good but also felt more like they just wanted to end the trilogy soon as possible that it felt somewhat rush at the end. It's very forgetful. My favorite was Pearl though.
In violent nature was sooo hard to get through but the yoga kill is an all timer for sure. Oddity is probably the “scariest” movie of the year also it’s my favorite horror movie on this list along with strange darling and longlegs. Top 5 of the year so far…1) Oddity 2) strange darling 3) longlegs 4)the first omen 5)Alien Romulus
Longlegs was my number 1 as well! I’ve seen it 3 times! I have been looking forward to your 4 month review. I was disappointed in The Strangers as well, but they did introduce a few new characters to make us wonder where chapters 2 and 3 could go. Maybe they made it a remake for a new generation of fans, who we can’t assume have already seen the original 2. Just my theory to keep me optimistic for a better chapter 2. Also, it seems chapter 2 will be released later than we initially expected, so maybe the director is heeding the negative reviews from Chapter 1 and reshooting some scenes. See you next quarter! 😊😊
Great list Lee. Though hurts my soul that maxxxine is so far down the list 😂 jokes of course. My ranking for the last few months would be (and obviously from the UK there is stuff I haven’t seen. Or stuff from your previous ranking that I finally have seen. Different release dates etc) 1. Maxxxine (also favourite of the year overall which makes me so happy because of how excited I was) 2. Love lies bleeding 3. Cuckoo 4. In a Violent nature 5. Milk and serial 6. Alien Romulus (could go up or down with a rewatch) 7. Longlegs (same as Alien) 8. Sting 9. The moor 10. Winnie the Pooh blood and honey 2 (probably better films lower down but I had more fun with this) 11. A quiet place day one (can’t remember if this made it to the last ranking. But I believe it came out in May) 12. The strangers chapter one 13. Trap 14. The last breath 15. Under Paris 16. Visher 17. Horror in the high desert 3 18. Tarot 19. Afraid 20. Something in the water 21. Bloodline killer (not even Shawnee Smith could save this for me)
Oh I'm definitely looking forward to watching it again Charlotte. I was just so disappointed because it was my most anticipated of the year. But hopefully that changes with repeat viewings.
I saw Longlegs twice in theaters ❤ It is one of the best films I’ve ever seen IMO. Great ranking! I was disappointed with Tarot, I thought they had an interesting story line with the cards but failed to deliver anything.
I couldn't believe I Booed Maxxxine!! Like Mia Great actress but hated the weak dumb ass ending!!! Same with In A Violent Nature!!! Can't wait to see where Terrifier going to be rank ??? Great Ranking!!!!

To be honest, 2024 has been a decent year when it comes to horror and we have had some good amount of horror movies which IMO not necessarily great but still watchable/good. From those that kind of stood out for me was Longlegs and that too would've loved it more if it wasn't for that ending which wasn't a fan of. Not that I hated so much but wish they could've done better. Though I'm waiting for Terrifer 3 and Smile 2 this October. Hope that will change for me and I really loved the previous movies. So there's still more hope for horror movies this Halloween month and i m excited.
I haven’t seen many of those horror movies but I personally wouldn’t call Trap a horror movie at all !! I was thinking about this movie yesterday and I’d like to see a sequel because of the ending, I enjoyed it despite a lot of bullshit/conveniences. Longlegs was definitely pretty good, amazing Nicolas cage’s performance. Maxxxine was pretty good to me, maybe not what I was expecting but pretty good. It wasn’t disappointing in my opinion.

In a Violent Nature 12. The Crow (2024) 13. Cocaine Werewolf Addendum - Blackout is an indie werewolf movie with an interesting cast, plotted like The Wolfman meets Jaws. However, the low budget shows in the effects and the acting is uneven. Not bad per se, but not amazing. Whereas Cocaine Werewolf is a shamelessly cheap, deliberately bad direct-to-video flick that's amusing only if you're in the mood or drunk.
2024 horror has been a mixed bag for me. i am not impressed with the "serious" horror...late night with the devil, oddity, first omen, longlegs. i found the stories too contrived...not all pieces fit...too many story conveniences although i do appreciate the artistry that went into them. on the other hand, i liked many "fun" ones...infested. sting, and abigail.
