As a Barca fan, I can guarantee there is no dumber fanbase than ours. There is always someone to blame. First it was players like Rakitić, and then he left. But then Suarez is problem, and he left also. But then Alba, Busquets and Pique were problem, and all of them left. But then Roberto and Alonso were problem even though they didn't even play. And they are gone now and we have to find someone else to blame and I guess it's Ter Stegen. There were seasons where only two consistently good players were Messi and ter Stegen. Some Barca fans seem to have completely lost touch with reality. Not only is ter Stegen a very good goalkeeper, good enough to compete with the best of them, he is also way better than Valdes ever was - and Barca won everything with Valdes in goal.
Good analysis. I just had this same conversation with my Son, minus the very well explained stats. I explained that in their last 0-3 loss, Ter Stegen is not the reason they lost. Besides the fact the offensive effort resulted in Zero goals, his defense not only made mistakes my 5th graders know not to do, but they kinda gave up playing defense for 2 of those goals...but TicTock and X being what they are will always want to blame someone, so Marc was the easy target for them. I have NEVER been close to thinking Ter Stegen was bad or is the problem in the club. On the contrary he, alongside Messi, have literally pretty much been the only 2 players on the field for YEARS. Any Barca fan saying Ter Stegen is a bad goalkeeper must be watching football for last couple years.. Literally Barca has never had a good goalkeeper, even that Subisaretta was a horrible goalie. Ter Stegen is a solid goalkeeper. Contrary to Barcas tradition of doing a lot of things horrible (club managing, defence, goalkeeper, singing good players, selling players expensive......etc....) the least Ter Stegen has solved one of it... The problem is defence, Barca has never had a good defence, yeah technically they have amazing defenders from time to time (Puyol cough...). But as a whole Barca is horrible at defense since dawn of the time...Whenever a team attacks Barca, you know there is a high probability, its going in... Barca is bad at defending collectively.. You know why Pique judges Ter Stegen? because he has no other person to blame for his horrible defending skills. For whole his carrier he has only 1 year of amazing defending, the rest is meh... And Ter Stegen still a good goalkeeper, it is just Barca is getting more and more weaker, so no high possessions and more defence. And if your have Maguire type of defence whether with spaces or in the air, your GK won't do a thing, its almost like any attack is a potentially penalty type of handicap against you. It's like Brazil...When Brazil is strong, they have the ball, and even their GK is king, but when they are not having those legends like Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Romario, Neymar...so on.. even with good squad they are not gonna play Brazilian football, so opponent will get the ball and smash them, because no matter how good their GK and defense is, they are not comfortable against attacks. typical example is David Luiz- he looks like great defender, but if an opponent heavily attacks, he is so horrible. what I am saying is, sometimes its the player, but in Barcas case its the team.. That team has to be restructured from top to bottom. A lot of mindset has to be changed.. Especially when your opponent RM has 10x team, with 10x mentality.. I am playing as a goalkeeper on an amateur level and when someone asks me why did I chose to be a gk (except of being tall and slow) I always think of times when I began showing interest to football back in 2017 when I was in middle school. And I remember looking at games and of course loving the game of field players, but the goalkeepers with that cool jumping saves were on the other level, espasially Ter Stegen who played a huge role in why I still support Barca. So when I read the comments of people blaming him for almost all Barca problem I tell them that Ter Stegen is one of the only reasons why the crisis wasn't much more severe and that the situation is getting better
Valdes was mediocre goalkeeper with fantastic defence infront of him, for the most of his carrier in Barcelona Ter Stegen played with a defence that was pretty much non existing Pique being the main flaw in it, so to hear Pique saying Ter Stegen didn't work hard enough unlike him is unfair to say the lest. And we all know how bad is the reletionship between Pique and Messi.
Stegen is not the only problem. The biggest weakness is that he does well in small games but when you need him the most,he fails to deliver; you know that he will be butchered by any good team. Secondly I watched valdes, he was a big game guy that's why he never conceded a hattrick from any player. He was a good shot stopper.

It’s hard to not watch the compilations at the end of a season and not judge Ter Stegen for improving his weaknesses that constant cost us. As the first captain and eldest player we need better performances. An example is the Jude goal in el clásico, ter stegen should be saving that and it damages morale and confidence in the young players for the rest of the game
I have watched valdes since 2006 and I can easily say he is better than ter stegen as a goal keeper, stegen better with the feet but valdes is much better as a goalkeeper. He was Quick-witted and comes out of his goal to stop attacks and prevent them from happening in the first place, but Stegen is the complete opposite. His positioning is disastrous and he never comes out even if the ball is much closer to him than the attacker. Watch Stegen and you will notice how the defenders try to close one corner to make it easier for him to deal with the other corner, but he does not do that. I think that after Arnold's corner, in which he did not direct the players as a goalkeeper, no one should trust him and his exit is a victory for Barcelona. The best goalkeeper to have passed through Barcelona in the last 20 years is Claudio Bravo, without a doubt. Unfortunately, he did not continue and Stegen was preferred over him in a strange way.
Glad you brought the point up about VV. Again, I never watched and am just trying to convey what sentiment is online. Keepers are very hard to compare and even the stats aren't able to tell the entire story. Overall, I don't think Ter Stegen is nearly as bad as a lot of people are making him out to me.

Stegen never leaves his goal to stop any attack and always freezes in place when scoring goals. Also, if the ball is very strong, you always feel him tense and surrender to it. These things are disastrous when they are present with any goalkeeper, as this makes the defenders not trust the goalkeeper, so they become tense and make mistakes. Courtois is an example for you. Rudiger, Militao and Mendy are not good enough defenders to always be heroes, but Courtois gives them confidence and is always behind them and saves them when they make mistakes, so you find them playing with confidence with Real Madrid, unlike with their national teams.

VV is a club legend and i absolutely love him, but ter Stegen is better than VV in every aspect but one. Communication. VV was never ever close to winning a player of the year, or any individual award. Victor Valdes had great reflexes but could not catch a ball, even if his life depended on it. Also, during the majority of Valdes time he had players like Puyol, Lilian Thuram and a World class Pique in front of him. During ter Stegens time he mostly had an aging Mascherano and the living heart attack that was Pique in his later years. People blame the goal on Arnold on him, which is fair. But the whole defence was shocking during the game and arguably the whole tournament. People who say that VV was better than ter Stegen are living a delusional nostalgia, or have never seen VV play. I respect your opinion, but i urge you to compare them without Nostalgia clouding your judgment.

I think Ter Stegen gives the team much more than we see. The months he was injured last season, the defense was completely disorganized. Until the team develops a central defender who knows how to organize the defense, Ter Stegen remains vital. Vibes and possible dressing room problems included.

Good analysis. I just had this same conversation with my Son, minus the very well explained stats. I explained that in their last 0-3 loss, Ter Stegen is not the reason they lost. Besides the fact the offensive effort resulted in Zero goals, his defense not only made mistakes my 5th graders know not to do, but they kinda gave up playing defense for 2 of those goals...but TicTock and X being what they are will always want to blame someone, so Marc was the easy target for them.

Any Barca fan saying Ter Stegen is a bad goalkeeper must be watching football for last couple years.. Literally Barca has never had a good goalkeeper, even that Subisaretta was a horrible goalie. I am playing as a goalkeeper on an amateur level and when someone asks me why did I chose to be a gk (except of being tall and slow) I always think of times when I began showing interest to football back in 2017 when I was in middle school. And I remember looking at games and of course loving the game of field players, but the goalkeepers with that cool jumping saves were on the other level, espasially Ter Stegen who played a huge role in why I still support Barca. So when I read the comments of people blaming him for almost all Barca problem I tell them that Ter Stegen is one of the only reasons why the crisis wasn't much more severe and that the situation is getting better

It’s hard to not watch the compilations at the end of a season and not judge Ter Stegen for improving his weaknesses that constant cost us. As the first captain and eldest player we need better performances. An example is the Jude goal in el clásico, ter stegen should be saving that and it damages morale and confidence in the young players for the rest of the game

I have watched valdes since 2006 and I can easily say he is better than ter stegen as a goal keeper, stegen better with the feet but valdes is much better as a goalkeeper. He was Quick-witted and comes out of his goal to stop attacks and prevent them from happening in the first place, but Stegen is the complete opposite. His positioning is disastrous and he never comes out even if the ball is much closer to him than the attacker. Watch Stegen and you will notice how the defenders try to close one corner to make it easier for him to deal with the other corner, but he does not do that. I think that after Arnold's corner, in which he did not direct the players as a goalkeeper, no one should trust him and his exit is a victory for Barcelona. The best goalkeeper to have passed through Barcelona in the last 20 years is Claudio Bravo, without a doubt. Unfortunately, he did not continue and Stegen was preferred over him in a strange way.
Glad you brought the point up about VV. Again, I never watched and am just trying to convey what sentiment is online. Keepers are very hard to compare and even the stats aren't able to tell the entire story. Overall, I don't think Ter Stegen is nearly as bad as a lot of people are making him out to me.

Valdes you feel that his blood is boiling and he wants to help with everything he has, and this is what I liked about him. Stegen never leaves his goal to stop any attack and always freezes in place when scoring goals. Also, if the ball is very strong, you always feel him tense and surrender to it. These things are disastrous when they are present with any goalkeeper, as this makes the defenders not trust the goalkeeper, so they become tense and make mistakes. Courtois is an example for you. Rudiger, Militao and Mendy are not good enough defenders to always be heroes, but Courtois gives them confidence and is always behind them and saves them when they make mistakes, so you find them playing with confidence with Real Madrid, unlike with their national teams.

I am sorry, but i habe to disagree with you. Like you i have watched barcelona for some time (2003 for me). VV is a club legend and i absolutely love him, but ter Stegen is better than VV in every aspect but one. Communication. VV was never ever close to winning a player of the year, or any individual award. Victor Valdes had great reflexes but could not catch a ball, even if his life depended on it. Also, during the majority of Valdes time he had players like Puyol, Lilian Thuram and a World class Pique in front of him.
During ter Stegens time he mostly had an aging Mascherano and the living heart attack that was Pique in his later years.
People blame the goal on Arnold on him, which is fair. But the whole defence was shocking during the game and arguably the whole tournament. People who say that VV was better than ter Stegen are living a delusional nostalgia, or have never seen VV play. I respect your opinion, but i urge you to compare them without Nostalgia clouding your judgment.

That’s not the mentality of a Barca captain. The club's management is also at fault for not bringing in any real competition for his spot, and La Masia should be called out for failing to produce a top-tier goalkeeper.

He's not especially loyal.... where is he going to go? There isnt really an "Up" to go to with many openings from Barcelona.
He likes to be critical of his teammates but rarely of himself and has had issues with a bit of a diva streak about wanting things done his way causing problems. If you could get 90% of the keeper without any of the clubhouse problems it'd be a good switch.

No Serious club would keep a back up Gk for their national team and has a long history of European history humiliation. He is known to be called Ter Static, Ter Haram, Ter Statue, Ter Hairline, for his inability to make an important world class save or protect the near post. He is not a good goalkeeper. I have done indepth analysis on him, he is not good enough!
