    As someone else mentioned in the comments, there is no 'standard' Turkish kemenche. I think the differences you pointed out in general may be correct, but there is a variety of options available from Turkish kemenche producers. If you look at whats available in their shops, they have 'Greek'-styles as well. It depends on what the player is looking for. They may prefer a specific wood species, a particular depth, and more or less holes. And there are local preferences as well. As mentioned the kemenches used in eastern Trabzon for instance resemble the Greek variety more (this actually the area where Greek is still spoken widely).

    i think pontic lyra has a better voice than turkish lyra. The sound of pontic lyra is deeper and it comes good to the ears. music connects people, greetings from turkey

    I think Turkish style is better for” fast horon “ Rums kemenches are better for emotional songs... Thats maybe Greek kemenche carries burden and sadness of migration...

      Hi Atakan. Greek luthiers make 3 types of kemenche, each one producing a slightly different sound. Fast paced tunes are played on an instrument that's a lot narrower and also not as deep, in fact almost as deep as the Turkish instrument shown in this video. Luthiers are able to produce instruments capable of fast and slow tunes.

      @@kemenchebasics Hello there... Here in Trabzon there are many Luthiers with differnt styles, and there is no standart for producing, and even fabricated cheap kemenches are available.. In my opinion demand is important, People here around uses Kemence at weddings and festivals, narrow and not deep Kemenches are used, thats is understandable because , Kemenceh's are playing and dancing at the same time, with fast and low tunes. ( Not easy to carry a big kemenche maybe??) and one another thing, in Mavro Thallasao sherperding and living on platoes are still common... If one carries Rum's kemenche ( We call Greek Kemenche Rum's Kemenche here) ;
      1- Holes on Kemenche may get wet ( mountains are rainy usually)and that will caouse bad effcets on voice;
      2- While you were walkin hours on foot, small , flexible kemence is effective.
      This is also the answer of why people in eastern blacksea ( east mavro thalasssa) likes kemenche so much , because of lifestyle and geography!!! Yo can walk hours and play kemenche simultaneously.... Same thing applies for bagpipes I think...
      As a result with small differentiantions or varietys, all Lyra and Kemence are same ... an impersive part of pontian Turks and Greeks, Considering peeople blacksea part of Turkey and immigrants of pontus like and use kemenche, Its definitely from same source; which is Mavra Thallasa.
