To anybody disregarding the piece due to the quartz movement, you should read hodinkee's article on the quartz grand seikos. The 9F movement can thermally regulate itself with the environment your in to ensure maximum accuracy. The battery efficiency is unbelievable and the watches machining is top notch. It's worth the money!
Nathan Black I hope I can pull your comment and put it on the first place right beneath the video frame so that people can read it and understand why this timepiece worths the price tag. To me I alwasy have faith in Japanese watch makers, they always know what they are doing, and for what they have done they sold products with the best price to performance ratio, cheers !
A true horologist is a lover of time not a lover of mechanical only watches. Technically these watches are not quartz they use Quartz as a feedback mechanism. They are still a mechanical watch.
Nathan Black you are right. This one is a pure quartz. I would not buy new, but I would buy second hand. I love high end quartz watches and like you said before, the 9f is astonishing.
Not only are you paying for that Grand Seiko level of finishing, but also that 9F High Accuracy quartz movement. Any Rolex's out there that can run for 50 years without having the movement serviced?! *crickets*
When I first saw this video I fell in love like never before with a watch. In 2017 I was able to do a swap deal exchanging a 354 parts Zenith 410Z for the first SBGX115 to be available in Holland in 3 years. Never regretted it, never seen one for sale since.
A lot of money has been spent by Swiss watch makers to convince you blokes that a bunch of temperamental springs and gears are better, or "more magical," than a quality quartz circuit. You are no doubt convinced. Is it because of said massive marketing effort? Certainly could be. I own three high end mechanical movements. They are difficult if you care at all that your timepiece tell the time. Most, unless shielded, are very sensitive to magnetic fields, are constantly losing or gaining time, and require frequent maintenance. I predict quartz will stage a renaissance. All that is necessary is for the Swiss to produce a wide selection of cases with quartz movements. For example, if one likes the Rolex Sub, one cannot get it, yet, with the optional quartz movement. That is coming.
+SteamPunk Quartz would need to be more durable for that to happen, IMO. I used to have a mid-price Swiss quartz watch, a Seafarer Barracuda (not a well known make). It kept excellent time (losing about 5 seconds a month) for the 8 years it worked and then gave up the ghost. On the other hand. my Tissot Seastar automatic was serviced this year and I'm still lucky if it's within a minute a week (it usually loses more like 2 minutes a week), but it's been working for 20 years now.
I hope what you're saying is true I love the Rolex oysterquartz but I think by the time I get outta college and will be able to afford one they will be rare collectors items or at least the ones in good condition are gonna be gone.
I use to have Swiss mechanical watches, I've sold them all. I personally just don't see the point of paying high dollar for less accuracy. I still want a GS but almost all of my watches are now Seiko's. My everyday wear is my SUN019, I know kinetic isn't everyone's cup of tea but I love mine. Feeling of an automatic, which I love, with Quartz accuracy.
It's not overpriced. If Seiko say its worth $4100, then that's a fair price. Seiko are an honest brand, which is more than you can say for the Swiss brands whose prices bear no relation to the cost to produce.
Sunyata I was responding to the usual ignorant 'That's too much for a Seiko' type of comments. The marketing sets the price, so with the right positioning and endorsements brands like Tag can charge a huge premium for some cheaply made watches. Seiko have their core range as their bread and butter, and because of this they know that their brand can't command silly premiums for their top spec watches which appeal to people who appreciate quality over the name on the dial. Therefore the prices they set are fair and the watch is worth what they are asking.
Great review of the Grand Seiko Quartz Diver. Both attractive watches, however you are right about this being a niche watch. The quartz movement at this price point for me is a no-brainer.
Why is the small round pip on the second hand on the wrong end of the hand? Why is the tail end of the minute hand so long? Won't it cover half of the hour hand at the 12:30 position?
Thanks for sharing. I might've missed it, but did you forget to mention the accuracy of the 9F quartz movement? The 9F is more accurate than all mechanical movements, even those costing thousands of dollars more than this watch; and the 9F is reportedly more accurate than all other quartz movements except for the Citizen Chronomaster series (which has a reported accuracy of plus or minus 5 seconds per year).
I agree on the date. So many very nice looking watches are ruined bij a date window. (Especially if that date window is at 3 o'clock.). A shiny steel hour hand on a white watch face may not be the best choice.
To all the nah sayers out there,..... Seiko is a fantastic brand and their fit and finish is beyond that of many swiss brands out there especially grand seiko. How do i know?,.....well i owned breitling ( the m2000 isnt up there at all,not even close) I own the rolex 114060 sub which is a very very well made piece and wears beautifull on the wrist with a great balans. I know that this Grand seiko diver is up there in fit and finish. Too be very honest,,,,,!!! The movement of the seiko, even if it is a quartz, has a better finish then that of the rolex period. Mine seiko ananta sprigdrive chrono is better finished then the rolex. So why did a bought the Rolex for?,.....because i like and appreciate the look of the Rolex and also the seiko for being a beautifull well crafted timepiece!!!. Forget the snobbery and wear what you like. So for the ones that are saying they would never buy a seiko for that kind of money, either don't like them( just fine) or the snobbery minds just take over. Cheers
Not overpriced, but oversized IMO. The pre-coaxial Seamaster at 40mm, 10.5mm thick is the ideal size. I don't understand why they didn't make this thinner like they did with all their other GS 9f watches. Why does Seiko keep making these bigger watches for their small wristed, japanese customer base?
Seiko has some really attractive-looking watches, and they have really useful technology(autoquartz, solar). Unfortunately, they rarely combine the two.
I'm not a big fan of grand seiko but I do appreciate their high beat movements. That said I can't see myself spending that kind of money on a Quartz grand seiko ,however I can see myself spending that money for a high beat GS if I were to have a horological nervous breakdown.
ADRIQOS I'm surprise this Quartz diver is at $4k. Their Grand Seiko 200mm Spring drive is at $6500. That's Submariner money. Grand Seiko doesn't have the prestige as Rolex and even if their quality and movement is on par or even better than Rolex there is no way they can compete at the same price point. I think this Quartz should be at T$1500 and the Spring Drive should be at $4000. They would sell a butt load more of these if those were the price.
+Aasa C - 3 year battery life. Any watchmaker can swap a battery along with a pressure test. After 50 years, it will need a service and it'll get sent to Japan, get stripped, relubricated and re-calibrated.
That quartz tick on the second hand is so unsatisfying. Nowhere near enough differentiation from Seiko to Grand Seiko, it just doesn't look like a luxury piece.
ok, this is a vey expensive ''battery powered'' watch indeed... but with a top notch construction quality and exterior finishing plus a state of art quartz movement... Now, do we get so annoyed by the price of a rolex submariner (more than double) which, along the high quality ''exterior'' ( but frankly, less refinished than this seiko) is powered by a 3135, a movement machine stamped in millions of pieces? or by the price of an aquatimer powered by a eta ( or sellita ) stamped in tens of millions? These are the prices of high end watches nowadays and we have to deal wth it
Walter Lee what you have to see here is that this is a ridiculously well made watch of incredible build quality. They could've thrown in there just a run of the mill quartz movement and that case, dial and bracelet would still be worth it! But instead, it's one of (if not the!) best quartz movements ever made. 50 years of no servicing, >1 second /month accuracy... how much should this package retail for? 2 grand? Other than the inferior clasp, you get Rolex quality everywhere, for 4k. It is a watch for people who want just 1 quartz watch in their collection and they want the best.
The mechanical watches many of you buy for under $10k are of very middling quality and cannot really hold a candle to these watches. Mechanicals are built for 10-15% of retail. That means your steel self-winder was made for just a few hundred dollars. To compare to these GS quartz divers in quality, you would have to spend at least $13-15k on an unadorned steel watch with self-winding movement. Put that way, the GS divers are a bargain.
+Walter Lee what you are asking is like who would pay a million dollars for a paint/ photo. guys who don't understand will never know what the value is.
Great watch but that damn bezel font is the only thing stopping me from getting one. Looks like something they borrowed from their Seiko Monster series!
I have no issue that it's quartz, I don't even have an issue that it's over $4k, the issue I have with it is that it's a 200M diver. You can get a nice vintage Rolex Submariner with an in-house Rolex mechanical movement and 300M water resistance for that much.
The ETA mechanical movements many of you own are available from the manufacture for $50-200 each. Why is it so hard to believe that Seiko spent more, R&D included, on developing one of the best Quartz movements ever made? Don't fool yourself into believing that the Rolex 3135 is to mechanicals what this Quartz is to the field of quartz watches. There is no comparison.
Also the movement is part of the package along with the case, bracelet, brand etc An auto or spring drive Grand Seiko cost quite a bit more than this but they cannot cheapen the brand by charging too much less than the mechanical alternatives
Qartz doesn't mean poor. Like mechanical ones there are average quality movements and very advanced movements. Seiko has always been the biggest name in quartz business and Grand Seiko has a much better level of finishing than most mechanical watches. I really like it but why there's no date indicator? I mean, 4 grand...
Nice watch, and great quartz movement. However, for professional diver there is Prospect Master series that goes down to 1000M. And yes, it's gotta say Seiko, because Japanese Seiko is an older brand than British Rolex, and so Seiko name has some serious legacy to it. Grand Seiko is just a line like the Sportura, Coutura (U.S. only), Galante, etc. Of course, Credor's tend to have Seiko name only on the back, but that should not be any shame the Seiko name, even on a $320,000 minute repeater limited piece. Yes, it's a Credor, but it clearly says Seiko on the back which is as significant as the front on that particular watch. Rolex back is not that significant as everyone knows. Anyway, my question here is, why are these called divers, as they will mostly be worn to a casual or even formal attire? A proper diver watch is bigger to go on top of the diver's suit and has rubber strap.
Actually my Diver is a Quartz Citizen Eco-Drive which has a NATO cordova band. It has hundreds of dives all over the World and going on 10+ years with no adjustment or need to ever open it up.
Problem is with seiko that they have such a huge price range in there watches. When someone looks and notices it's a seiko they will instantly think "cheap" unlike brands like Rolex
it's fucking beautiful, but.. I'd still go for the classic iconic grand seiko's over these if I would buy one.. mainly because for the amount of money i'm paying I could wear it with anything,
Rashad +BeautyofScent Yeah but at that price you're not just buying a watch but a status symbol as well. If i was dropping this much on a quartz it would be Breitling Superocean M2000. But i would always get an auto
Give me a break! 4K for a quartz battery powered watch? Expensive beautiful mechanical watches are pieces of art while the quartz watches are produced by machines. If you want a quality quartz watch that just keeps on going for years and years without opening up the back, then choose the Citizen Diver with the Eco-Drive movement, 300 meter diver. But actually 200 or 300 meters are both divers and 600+ feet is well below recreational limits. With Citizen, the actual difference between 200 and 300 meter ratings is the pressure that they are assembled under and hence the back pressure.
+drmoynihan Almost all mechanical watches have machined parts, then assembled by hand. The 9F62 movement is assembled by hand. This is a high torque movement, adjustable timing, sealed cabin, can adjust hand alignment, 50 year service interval (battery change every 3 years). You can't compare this a standard quartz and it craps all over eco drive. Believe it or not, it costs more to produce a 9F62 than a COSC ETA movement. This is coming from someone who owns many mechanicals (including a Rolex Explorer II). You gotta appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into these movements, which are probably the best quartz movement in the world.
Best Quartz movement in the world??? Look at the precisionist 97b122 that is worlds better and a fraction of a fraction I the price. Sweeping second hand at 16 bps date and 8 hand chronograph that measures up to 12 hours down to a 1/1000 of a second. And accurate to 10 seconds a year
+Slim7321 Bulova precisionist can't hold a candle to this. They aren't thermocompensated, and they rarely manage to get 10SPY. They are also not serviceable (throw away movement), unlike the 9F62 which is completely serviceable.
$4100 for a quartz???? I bought a Tudor black bay for a little over half that and its almost identical. I do like Grande Seiko and want their spring drive with white face, but jeez these two are going to be a hard sell.
I love and respect seiko, always have, own a couple pieces to this day, but this watch is a joke.. For that price point, quartz should be out of the question, and secondly, stop trying to look like a rolex! You're seiko, be seiko, and let Rolex be rolex... Do you see rolex trying to be any other brand!?
Anyone who owns mechanicals (like me) and checks them consistently against a reliable time standard will develop interest in quartz. Mid-range mechanical movements are incapable of sustained accuracy without frequent overhauls. People who believe otherwise are victims of aggressive marketing campaigns by the Swiss manufactures.
Me, my last mechanical was a Breitling Superocean. It broke after 4 years and cost half the watch to fix, so i cut my losses after seeing the GS limited edition SBVG19. I hate dress watches, would never go back to quartz and i suffer from swiss snobbery, but you just have to see GS in the flesh to understand them. My quartz is 100% inhouse, handmade by 2 guys, is accurate to 5 seconds a year and has a DISPLAY CASEBACK to show off the hand decorated movement. Its very niche and not for everyone, but i understand their cult status.
I’ve had dozens of mechanical watches over the years and own 5 now but am interested in a high end quartz as part of the collection. Would be silly to get a quartz from a Swiss or German brand but Seiko invented it and have amazing case/finishing quality in their grand seikos so...
Me. This damn hobby has seen 100k bought and sold over 5 years with everything from a few Rolex, multiple Omega, vintage, and rare, and appreciate the fine movements of my speedy, Railmaster, Deville but the two that get the most wrist time are now quartz. Full circle. I have the 117 shown here plus a 300m quartz and the GS SBGN003 GMT. All three are amazing watches with incredible accuracy, just pick them up and wear them. Full circle indeed. I will always have a select few mechanical but I expect I will.always have at least 1 x high end quartz as well.
$ 4.100 for a Seiko, complet insane!! For a Seiko you just have to pay € 700 at max. When i will buy a high end watch it sure will not be a Seiko, because a Seiko remains a Seiko, just a ordinaire Japanese watch.
To anybody disregarding the piece due to the quartz movement, you should read hodinkee's article on the quartz grand seikos. A true horologist is a lover of time not a lover of mechanical only watches. Technically these watches are not quartz they use Quartz as a feedback mechanism.
They are still a mechanical watch.
bighands69 are you sure you're not confusing this Seiko with their spring drive system? Because I'm basically certain this is a pure quartz movement
Nathan Black you are right. This one is a pure quartz. I would not buy new, but I would buy second hand. I love high end quartz watches and like you said before, the 9f is astonishing.
treated myself to one of these and its truly wonderful. Had it 3 months and it has only lost 1 second .

Why not a sweep solar quartz movement....???
To all the nah sayers out there,.....
Seiko is a fantastic brand and their fit and finish is beyond that of many swiss brands out there especially grand seiko.

I love Grand Seikos, but these quartz divers few of the oddballs ones... they should have picked a better font for the bezel.
Seiko has some really attractive-looking watches, and they have really useful technology(autoquartz, solar). Unfortunately, they rarely combine the two.
Where can I find this watch?
I'm not a big fan of grand seiko but I do appreciate their high beat movements. That said I can't see myself spending that kind of money on a Quartz grand seiko ,however I can see myself spending that money for a high beat GS if I were to have a horological nervous breakdown.

is the bezel made of ceramics?
How often do you need to change the battery? Thanks

DeeDeeDanone Yeah, some other grand seikos are nice offerings, this one is overpriced
Great Review! Superb Watch!
Seiko should make more No Date dive watches..
Expensive watch!! I also like the look of the piece.
Fine quartz movement and finish and attention to detail with a 200 meter rating for 4K? I call that a very tough sell!
ok, this is a vey expensive ''battery powered'' watch indeed... but with a top notch construction quality and exterior finishing plus a state of art quartz movement...
These are the prices of high end watches nowadays and we have to deal wth it
I would go for Bulova UHF
Guys help me out here, who/what is the market for a 4k quartz watch? I dont get it!

+Ryan Li no not at all, as an old art major I understand fully the inherent value in art but this is somehow different
+Ryan Li put it this way, mechanical watch is to painting as quartz is to a print
So beautiful watch
Great watch but that damn bezel font is the only thing stopping me from getting one. Looks like something they borrowed from their Seiko Monster series!
Get a Sinn ux for that kind of Money. The best Dive watch there is !
I have no issue that it's quartz, I don't even have an issue that it's over $4k, the issue I have with it is that it's a 200M diver. You can get a nice vintage Rolex Submariner with an in-house Rolex mechanical movement and 300M water resistance for that much.
If you could take that Rolex past 200 meters depth, you would quickly find out that 300m is easy to print on a watch dial.
looks good but why so expensive for quartz
The ETA mechanical movements many of you own are available from the manufacture for $50-200 each. Why is it so hard to believe that Seiko spent more, R&D included, on developing one of the best Quartz movements ever made? So many rolexes out there are fake anyway but ultimately I wear a watch for me not to show off to other people.
I like it but not for 4k. I know it's a high quality watch.Sorry I prefer mechanical movements.
The bezel ruins this one for me. The font and the size of the numbers. Love the smaller 42.7mm case though. 42mm is goldilocks for 7.5" wrist
That's a beautiful sounding bezel, haha.
it's fucking beautiful, but.. I'd still go for the classic iconic grand seiko's over these if I would buy one.. mainly because for the amount of money i'm paying I could wear it with anything,
The audio is not as good in this video as in your past videos. It's simultaneously somewhat muffled and slightly distorted.
Oke, looks like a Rolex in a Omega case watch with a quartz movement for the price of a Rolex. What do you think yourself ???
Pieter P. Good luck finding a Rolex at $4,100, even used and beat to hell.
Wai Wong not that difficult, I've seen 14060m 2 liner subs for 4000-4500 on forums
I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so...
You need to have a Lexus, Seiko and Sony home set up to really turn Japanese.
+bighands69 got the sony, got the seiko. But the lexus is only for the big boys $$$
everything about them is perfect, except for the hands and the bezel, could've been done much better.
$4100 for quartz? NO THANK YOU SEIKO! I'M SORRY I MEAN GRAND SEIKO!
jasio kowalski the name Seiko is on the dial. nuff said

Rashad Well it is ovepriced..Nice look to me but for that money Tudor or even a Rolex can be found, not to mention breitlings and omegas...
Yeah, it's better to buy IWC Portofino at Sellita SW300 for 6000 euro ))))
The Longines vhp deviates 2 seconds per year. Longines is much better.
they looks like a tudor replica HAHAH :D
Ok, you know what?
I will buy the white dial one when I can pay 4100 for a seiko whithout thinking!
Accurate to 10 seconds per YEAR ?!!
They do make once that's accurate to 5s/year if this one is a bit slack for you :0)
$4100 for a quartz???? I bought a Tudor black bay for a little over half that and its almost identical.
I do like Grande Seiko and want their spring drive with white face, but jeez these two are going to be a hard sell.
3 years later I bought one 21 months old for $2,300. I can live with that.
4k Just no no for a quartz. If it was a quartz that sweeps then yea maybe
Seikos, even Grand Seikos, do absolutely nothing for me.
Ppl trying to convince themselves this is great!..😕
Haha inferior mindset
Show me a sane person who goes back to quartz after getting into mechanical...
Cmon..
I will always have a select few mechanical but I expect I will.always have at least 1 x high end quartz as well.
not very original looking.
Grand Seiko Quartz Diver not good SBGX063 is better
$ 4.100 for a Seiko, complet insane!! For a Seiko you just have to pay € 700 at max. When i will buy a high end watch it sure will not be a Seiko, because a Seiko remains a Seiko, just a ordinaire Japanese watch.
