I did it Pam this weekend I went to Lowe's and got 1 10ft 3/4" PVC pipe and a 10ft 1/2" PVC pipe and made me 2 different stand. I made 2 12x 12 frames from the 3/4 and 1/2" pipe. With the remaining pipe from both sizes I made 6" to make a 6x6 frame for my smaller work. I would like to thank you for your video on showing us how. It saved me a lot of money from buying a wood lap frame. And my Q snap clamps fit both frames. I also tried just putting the frame together without the base to make just the frame part and it works just like a Q snap. I cant just can't up a picture on RUclips. To show you. Thanks again Pam
i just made a six inch version this afternoon! it was about $15 for all the materials from home depot, but i bought two-foot lengths of 1/2 inch pvc instead of one big one, which would have been cheaper. it only took about five minutes to cut it all with a pex cutter and get it put together! thank you so much for the tutorial!!
Thank you for the awesome video! I just went to my local hardware store and discovered I can get a 20 foot section of 3/4" of pvc for less than the cost of a 10 ft section. About 15% less. So now I have enough to make two maybe three 8 x 8 frames. Before the day is over I will have one for me and one for my wife. Thank you! GREAT video.
I ran across this video by chance. I new had had to make one. I got the pieces from the hardware store (I also have a PVC cutter, which makes it so much faster to make) and made my self one. I make one that is 8 wide by 11 tall and them came back and cut me a couple of other sizes so depending on the project, I should have the right size. I have been using the frame for almost a week and have to say that I LOVE it. it has great balance and not heavy. It is easy to turn to start/end thread. Thank you so much for putting this tutorial up. My daughter wants one and so does a good friend of mine. I am sure I will make me a couple more...because after all who has just one project going at a time...LOL!!
I just came back to cross stitch after 14-20 years and was finding some things difficult... For instance, holding a q snap for extended time and my vision had changed. So we made your frame which was very simple thanks to your video but I still had some problems with it and had to adjust some of the measurements. I kept the original pieces but it cut down the side pieces to, that brings my stitching area closer to me so I can see the holes better. Also a stitch in bed and the pieces for the bends were also too long,so I cut them in half. This all brings the entire thing closer to me and easier to work with the way I like to work. I was happy to find that either Amazon had the clamps to fit on the three-quarter inch piping we bought because, for some reason, we got the schedule 40 so it was bigger around and my q snap clamps wouldn't work. Now I have a mighty sturdy adjustable stand for relatively cheap. Thanks again!!!
What a great tutorial Pam! Thank you so much for making it. I saw on Facebook that an SOS pad will take the markings off PVC pipe really easily. Thanks again.
I am a very happy stitcher, my husband made me one today it cost 6.02 he did end up using the 1/2 inch piping. Thankfully a young man working in Lowes even cut the piping !
Thanks for the tutorial. I just finished my first one with the help of my son. It was really quite easy, even if I had to measure and cut all the pieces, it didn't take me more than 45 minutes altogether! Now, to try it out...
Hi Pam, I did my lap stand exactly as yours, its awesome, I use 1/2 inch in diameter, I found it much better to handle it. I even made 2 more sides pipes shorter for small work. thanks so much, spend less than $7, $6.25 to be exact at home depot, there are two kind of 1/2 inch pipe, I bought the thinner one. "I forgot that I recommend to buy two 5 feet long pvc pipes, also included in the price".
Excellent tutorial, very easy to understand. I've seen these homemade stands, but never really understood how they were made. This really clears it up! Thanks so much for this video! Nina
I am actually speeches. Big around of applause. Thank you just doesn't seem enough. But thank you. I bought the one from Amazon. It's good. But I want more width than height. Now I can build it to my specifications. I was wondering, can you add something in the center side bars so you can rotate the frame to get to the underneath side. A world of thanks. You were mentioned on another Flosstuber. Kudos
thank you very much for the diamiter of the pipe. My husband is a plumber so he works with this pipe all the time. If anyone knows a plumber they can probably get the pipe for next to nothing. I have seen the video where the lady said she used half inch diameter pipe and I knew right away umm nope that can't be right lol. My husband has been wanting to know exactly what diamiter of pipe to get to make me one. He didn't want to take a q snap clip in the hardware store with him lol.
+Sharleen Bielman glad my video helped. Some places measure the diameter by the outside of the pipe and some measure based on the interior of the hole. Here in Newfoundland its by the interior so 1\4 inch.
here in the US it is the interier as well. This is because of plumbing reasons lol. My husband is a journeyman plumber and had to go to 4 years of college to get his license lol. Not all states are that way though. The state that we live in is very strict about plumbing code because it is for the safety and health of people who use the plumbing which is everyone lol.
Thank you so very much for this tutorial!! My pipe diameter turned out to be 1/2 inch. I took snap clamp with me as you said and tried both 1/2 & 3/4 and 1/2 was best. Great advice ~ Thank you!! took with me to beach and was so very comfortable. I made 2 and total for both was under $12.00 TFS~chelle
Hi Pam! Just wanted to Thank you for this tutorial. My husband helped me buy the parts for it and I LOVE it! It has changed my life. Thank you so much!! I love all your wips and ffo's . I just shared my new lap stand on my latest video. ❣😊
thank you so much for doing this! i'v went got the pieces as a first time making things lol i've was able to make it same size. definitely going to make a bigger one ontop and now i'm going to use the extra pipes to make some qsnap clamps, just need to go get a clamp to clamp them to be cut up. thank you.
Hi! Just made this for myself. I wanted one to use for tabletop so I can see at eye level and use both hands to stitch. Perfect. Thanks so much. The video was great. Thanks, again!
You are awesome. This was a great tutorial. I made it with no problems. I like that you explained which pieces to change if you wanted the frame size different.
I made the stand today so ready to try it out thank you so much I think I am really going to like it. I had bought a floor stand for the q-snap spend little over 50 and do not like it but I think this is going to really get me stitching more since I want to try parking and to hand stitching so many someday I can get one of my haeds done.
Hi Pam, Thank you so much for making this video! I have watched this video several times and finally went out and bought all the materials I needed to assemble this lap stand. Your instructions are very clear and I like how well you explain everything. Great job! I now have my lap stand assembled and am excited to use it! I have cross stitched years ago and now with RUclips and your channel I can't believe how much I still have to learn! I usually do small projects so that I can get them done. My biggest project was 8" x 11 1/8" (Angel of God prayer with a little girl kneeling and praying by her bed) which was for my Goddaughter. I would like to do more large projects. I did not know about gridding. Do you have a video on how you start your large projects? It would be most helpful. Thank you again! Greetings from Saskatchewan, Canada!
Hi Michella, Thank you so much for watching my videos. Happy to hear you like the lapstand. ☺ I don't have any videos at the moment on how I start a piece. If it's one of my large full coverage pieces I typically just start in the top left corner allowing 2-3 inches on top and in from the side. I typically cut my fabrics with about 3 inches to spare around all 4 sides. That's more then enough for framing.
Hi Pam, Thank you for your reply. This will help me out if I ever get around to doing a larger project. It makes more sense to start at the top left corner and work your way down rather than starting in the middle. I am used to starting in the middle, as most of the projects I have done are small. However, I did start the Angel of God Prayer project in the middle. I wish I would of thought of starting at the top left corner. I think it would also help me count more accurately than starting in the middle. It can get confusing sometimes! Oh well, live and learn! Also thank you for the guide on how much fabric to leave around your project. Anyway thank you again for your reply!
:-) Hello I found your video by way of Lindystitches. Just made your stand while on vacation this week. It was so easy to follow your instructions......Had enough PVC tubing to make interchangeable 10" and 8" frames! :-) Thanks so much for sharing this!
ohhh awesome when I get home from holidays I am making myself one to leave in my trailer Thank you so much for the directions and I am so glad you don't have pink eye. HUGS, Patty BC Canada
Thank you for making this video. I was able to repurpose some PVC pipes that I had made for a backdrop stand into a lap frame with extra to make different sizes if I want.
That was a great tutorial! Thank you for giving all the measurements. I'm not handy in the workshop, but I think the hardware store will cut the measurements for me. Then, with your example i will have a new stand!
What a terrific video! I wonder how many people has created these now from this video.... 5 months later. :) I'll be talking to my hubby about this video :) :) :)
Thanks so much for the helpful tutorial! I've been having hand pain lately, and holding the qsnap just wasn't possible. My husband made me one today for under $10! :)
Well, i got all my 3/4 inch pvc and elbows. Had my brother cut it, and I put it all together and looks good now i have to make the Q snaps from pvc. i payed $6.79 for all the parts at my local MENARDS and they have that 11% going on also
Someone made of already commented on this but...if you have a knock off q snap and want to use them in the stand, the tubes ARE 1/2". I guess the real q snaps are really a 3/4". I bought 3. 10'. 3/4 pipe, economy bag of 90 degree angel, 2 45's, 4 T pieces (not sure why 4 only need 2). This will yield stand 8x10, 10x10,11x17,12x12,10x12 and 17x17. I paid right at $27.00. Try to buy all those sizes!: Happy Stitching my fellow stitch' fairies!
Someone posted her husband’s pvc pipe lap stand. I lost the directions….😢thank you so much for this. Now all I have to figure out is how to cut the pipe. Hopefully you will address this in the video…. The 45 degree pieces are called elbows.
Excellent tutorial Pam! I might have to look at making one of those for my daughter and throwing away the horrible old stand she's using! Hubbie said Mineral Turpentine or Methylated Spirits should remove the writing from the pipes... If you wanted to get rid of it. Happy stitching 😉 xx
I remember viewing your tutorial several years ago and I'm a little late to the party but wanted to view again as I want to make one. Love your tutorial and the lap stand you made. Planning on making one like yours and want to make one like Blitz Stitch uses where you can set a frame on the lap stand rather than attaching the fabric to the stand itself. You can never have too many stands right? Thanks so much Pam! update: Lap stand completed... :) love it! BTW, after I washed all the pieces in hot soapy water, I was able to get all the black writing off with an SOS pad with little effort. I left one section that was printed "made in the USA" on one of the pieces. In the US, I had to use 1/2" pipe for the premade clamps to work. I did purchase 3/4" pipe too as I want to make another one like blitstitch made where you rest your frame on the stand. Happy stitching!
I made one a few months back. My design is just slightly different though. I also used 1/2 inch pvc. Might have to try the 3/4 inch. I have. Problem with tension.
+shereen pv Thank you. It's actually not my design. I'm just demonstrating how easy it is to use. There is a link in the description of where you can find the original post of this lapstand. ☺
Thank you for the great tutorial, I just made one 11x17 and I love it. How about a floor stand, any ideas, I'll have to figure that out as well. I use it for rug hooking, and it works great, thinking of making different sizes 24x36 and ideas let me know.
+Rae Costello Awesome! You can certainly make these as floor stands as well. Just search youtube there are a couple videos. I believe colour cascades has a video showing a large floor stand meant to hold a scroll rod frame.
Pam, thank you for your video. I am going to try and go to a small harder store instead of Home Depot ( which I tried and they wouldn't cut the pipe). I will see if they will cut for me, but If I can't do you think if I got a small hand saw I could do It? That would probably make it very jagged? Great video and than you for sharing. Debbie
Thanks so much Pam! Love your videos. Learning a lot. Going to get some pvc pipe this weekend and make a 20 x 25 stand for my next project! how did you make out with your picture you got from China? I'm curious because I also bought one last year, but I decided to frog it and start on an Aida 14 blank canvas because I found that the background was quite visible even using 3 strands. keep up the good work Pam, we're loving it! Margaretha
+Rita Violeau Thanks Rita. Glad you like the stand idea. I find mine very useful. As for the piece from China, I haven't stitched on it yet. I'm thinking it'll become a travel project in the next year. I just have too many wips at the moment.
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I always wondered how to make one. But I have one question. How do you take out your project? don't you usually have to slide out the snaps?
Pam! This video is amazing and you do such a wonderful job explaining what to do. Thank you! I've really been wanting to try one of these. Do you have a video or know of any where it shows someone using it? Like a demo after it's made? I'm really interested in seeing that before making.
+Weasley Studios Thanks. I did make a video a little further along showing how I use mine. Here's the link I think. ruclips.net/video/lfgaHpRYtxo/видео.html
This is a wonderful video. I am 72 years old and I do believe that I can make one by myself following your directions. Thank you angel girl.
So pleased to hear my video will help. Enjoy your stitching!
I’m 9 years older than you and I KNOW I can do it. YOU CAN DO IT ALSO!
I just made your lap stand $7.84. Can't get enough better than that. Thanks so much for the tutorial. You are so awesome. Thanks Bonnie
So happy it worked out. And you're right for that price you can't go wrong. :) Happy stitching.
7 years later ……. Still fabulous! Thank you!
Thank you so much ❤

Omg!! This is great. My husband is a pipe fitter and he doesn't know it yet but he is going to be making it soon!
Lolol
My ‘Handyman’ and his wife just drove to Tennessee with his wife.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 to live.
Wow you looked like a seasoned RUclipsr. Very clear instructions. Well done. Thank you.
Thank you ❤
OMG I am so glad you found him. I have been praying you would. I knew if anyone could find him you could! Thank you for all you do !

I LOVED this video. My husband and I are going to Lowe's tonight and he is making me one this weekend. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
+Lynn Highland glad you enjoyed it. Hope you enjoy the stand as much as I do. Its simple to use and easy to pack up if need be.
Thank you for taking the time to show us how to do this! My husband made me one and had leftover pipe to make smaller one!!! Love it!!!
Awesome. Glad you like it.
This is the 3rd time I've watched this -it's great! I've made 2, one this size and one smaller. Great video! Thanks!

You are a genius! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I can't wait to try one. Been wanting a lap stand forever!
+Wendy JB Hoping it works out well for you.
This is really helpful thank you very much. I didnt think of taking the clamps to the hardware store for size reference!
Excellent tutorial, very easy to understand. I've seen these homemade stands, but never really understood how they were made. This really clears it up!
Thanks so much for this video!
Nina
Thank you Nina
Oh wow Pam this is genius!!!! Perfect for my commuting I'm off to buy some pipe lol - thank you for showing this tutorial😉😁👍
Good luck Teresa. Let me know if you do make one and what size you make. I think 12 inches may be a little large for public transport. :)

Fabulous video!!! I just bought my first Q Snap frame and thought, there has to be a way to make one! I am making this for sure!!!
You are awesome. This was a great tutorial. I made it with no problems. I like that you explained which pieces to change if you wanted the frame size different.

Thanks for your video on how to make a PVC frame. I will go to hardware store this weekend and make me a couple a large and small one.
This video is great! I have been looking for a tutorial for a q snap lap frame, and yours is perfect! Thank you!

What a terrific video! I wonder how many people has created these now from this video.... 5 months later. :)
I'll be talking to my hubby about this video :) :) :)
I'm not sure how many but this video certainly does get a lot of views. Happy stitching.
So clear and easy to under stand. I might just give this ago. Thanks. Great tutorial.
Thanks
Great tutorial Pam nice lap stand xx
Oh my stars! Thank you soooo much! Your directions are clear and easy to follow. Again, thank you very much!
Thank you for watching. Happy to hear the instructions helped. 😊
Thanks for sharing this video. I will be making one or many this weekend.
made one of your lap stands.. I'm soooooooo in love!!!!
OMG! this was so easy to do ... may make more in different sizes! Thank you!
Nice video. I used acetone to remove the markings on the PVC.
Good tip. Never thought of acetone.
Wonderful! I will try this for sure. TFS
Awesome you just gave my hubby a little project to do!!! Hehe!!! Thanks so much!!
Pam That is AWESOME!!!!!
Thanks.
Thanks so much for the helpful tutorial! I've been having hand pain lately, and holding the qsnap just wasn't possible. My husband made me one today for under $10! :)
Perfect. Hopefully your hand feels better soon.
Oh my gosh, I want one of those! And I think we've got a lot of PVC left over from a plumbing project....
Perfect. Good luck up cycling those leftovers. ☺
I'm not handy with pipe but my son is. I'd bet that he could make one for me out of scraps he has laying around. Great tutorial.
Thank you. Amazing informative video tutorial. I will be making this stand
Well, i got all my 3/4 inch pvc and elbows. Had my brother cut it, and I put it all together and looks good now i have to make the Q snaps from pvc. i payed $6.79 for all the parts at my local MENARDS and they have that 11% going on also

I did do a follow-up video after showing it in use. You should be able to find it on my channel. Thanks for watching ❤
Thank you!!! My stand cost $9.00 from Home Depot and was labeled 1/2in pipe!!!
Fantastic. Happy stitching!
Fantastic tutorial Pam thankyou. my only issue is getting a 10ft length of pvc home lol. I only have a small car.
+sillyeels I had the same issue but the guy at the store cut a length for me so I had 2 pieces that fit in the car to get it home
Ah well that makes sense then, will def give this a go..........thanks again for a very clear tutorial.Cheers from Australia-Elaine
You're a great educator!
Thank you. Glad you understood me. First attempt at a tutorial.
I priced the supplies to make this today and only around 7.00 thank you so much for the tutorial
Thank you very much. Am from Sri lanka and very grateful to you.
Thank you for watching ❤
I really appreciate you sharing this.
Enjoy
Someone posted her husband’s pvc pipe lap stand. I lost the directions….😢thank you so much for this. Now all I have to figure out is how to cut the pipe. Hopefully you will address this in the video….
The 45 degree pieces are called elbows.
Wow thanks for the idea I’ll buy pvc tomorrow to make one
Thanks. Hope it works well for you
Excellent tutorial Pam! I might have to look at making one of those for my daughter and throwing away the horrible old stand she's using!
Hubbie said Mineral Turpentine or Methylated Spirits should remove the writing from the pipes... If you wanted to get rid of it.
Happy stitching 😉 xx
Glad you liked the tutorial and Thanks for the tip
Wow! You are one smart lady!! ☺
Thanks for watching. I still use my stand and Brian's stand is great for anyone that uses scroll frames for sure.
Nail polish remover (acetone) gets the writing off.
I liked the way it was made
I am liking your design I am using it!!!
+Nancy Spicer That fantastic. 👍
Got mine made today!! Thank you! This is awesome!!!!
Awesome. 💕
I made one a few months back. My design is just slightly different though. I also used 1/2 inch pvc. Might have to try the 3/4 inch. I have. Problem with tension.
Yes I tried my clamp on the 1/2 inch one and it was way too loose.
Thank you so much for this video! I made one, and love it! 💜😍
Awesome Vicki!
Great tutorial! You sure are crafty :)
+Khristine Doiron Thank you. I didn't design the stand but I thought it would be helpful for people to see how easy it is to make one yourself.
Wow. Thanks for sharing, I might have to try it
Great tutorial, Pam! Thank you :-)
Thank you so much for making this video.its very helpful for me.
Happy to hear it was helpful.
Such a great idea. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Thank you for watching.
Hubby and I are heading out to get the pieces :-)
Thanks. I am making one this weekend.
Very helpful...Thank you so much for sharing your idea...👏
+shereen pv Thank you. It's actually not my design. I'm just demonstrating how easy it is to use. There is a link in the description of where you can find the original post of this lapstand. ☺
Pam's Crafty Corner Oh...so sweet of you... I really appreciate you for being so honest...you are a wonderful person:)
I did it and it worked!! Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching. Happy to hear it worked for you.
Debbie
Thank you
I've been wanting to make one😍😍😍
Pam's Crafty Corner Thank you!
thanks for the instructions. Now I just have to go to the hardware store. thank again
Awesome video!!! I will have to make me one...very helpful...ty
Just make sure you take your Q-snap clamp to the hardware store to ensure a proper fit. :) Happy stitching.
Fantastic!! Thank you for the tutorial!!
