Great idea great idea on the rubber mats instead of foam. A pressure washer - a strong gas powered one as opposed to an electric one - works great to get rid of the old foam encasing an old tank to be replaced and cleaning up the area before installing a new tank.
Uhhhh....No 5200 on the tank securing screws going into the stringers? No bueno! I just went through the issue of the previous owner of my boat having replaced the fuel sender and just used 2-part epoxy, instead of installing threads into the tank to match the new sender. The holes were already there and pretty large, so they skipped the creation of new threads and affixed it with the epoxy. Fast forward to 2021, where I keep having water in fuel issues. When I pressure tested the tank, found the sender was leaking, so I removed it and installed Riv-nuts and affixed it the proper way. This channel has been a big help in me being able to diagnose and correct this issue. I plan to post a RUclips video on how I corrected it as a give-back to the community! Thank You Aaron!

Man, I never thought watching spacers being installed would be nail hitting haha. If they would have fallen down to the bottom, would have been a nightmare. Great work.
Guess when you'll find out you have a sour fuel tank ? Just bounce that boat around on a rough day and if your filter plugs up, you have a problem. Always carry a spare filter and a plastic bag to catch spills. Make sure you shut everything down and air out the boat well. Carry an outboard tank, bulb and hose until you know. You can connect to the carb. ? and hand pump your way home, at least you could. Now I imagine the fuel pump will be the point of connection.
It used to be that Tuesday just meant it was only 6 more working days until Monday.... Not anymore! It means this channel posts a new exciting video, and it's only 6 more working days until Monday! :) What an improvement on the week!!! :)
drive a finishing screw into the top of the starboard to aid putting it into place for drilling. then just twist out the nail when it is screwed in place. just makes it a bit more convenient.
Putting the fuel vent midship seams logical to me. Our Supra wake boat has the fill and vent rear starboard side. So if you fill it up full while on the trailer, gas shoots out the vent during bow rise. The hoses both connect to the back of the tank as well. I have been wondering how difficult it would be to relocate the vent and I now see it’s not that difficult at all. Thanks man!!
Oh no, that sucks! I don't know why they didn't think about that when they put that boat together lol Yeah, it's not the bad to relocate, you really want to get in and inspect before you start though, sometimes there can be complications with the stringers! Just make sure you can run the hose where ever you want to put it and maybe it would be an easy Saturday morning project :)
If I redo any boat with a gelcoat or similiar coating floor, those type of mats used for the fuel tank are what I'm using in the walkway. Much more cheaper and less hassle than dealing with adding Snap On carpet. Carpet just seems like a never ending hassle.
New here and got to say u guys r brilliant and doing a good job. Not sure if we can ask any queries here with rusted, leaking fuel tanks or say putting a new gas tank in to VEC technology Glastron SSV 170. Can we cut open the fibre glass deck floor and change the tank ? will it affect the boat stability since i am using 140 HP outboard. OR is it better switch to use portable gas tanks on deck area like gasoline bladders etc and forget abt rusted under deck gas tank. Thanks in advance !
My concern would be that you just introduced a possibility for water to enter the stringers. No Silicone on the stringer to prevent water from running down the screws and rotting them out
I was always told never use rubber under an aluminum fuel tank. Always use starboard. The rubber which is essentially carbon mixed in a salt water with aluminum creates a corrosive environment. Rubber is made with carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and can result in galvanic corrosion. Therefore, you should never use rubber strips near your aluminum fuel tank.
Thank you! Both, you want to ground the tank itself as well as ground the fill port. Usually you just run them to your ground block where all of the boats grounds tie together.
Haha, that's funny, I'm amazed that he still warranties all of the tips for me :) and my 6" quick disconnect #2 Phillips impact bits! I change out 1 or 2 of those a week lol
I've tried to think about that and how I could do that lol as well as a video of all the times the cameras have fallen off stuff! I'm amazed how durable these GoPro's are. I had one suction cupped to the seat on the tower of a 39' Sea Vee, probably about 20 feet up, and we were about 10 miles out and it fell all the way down to the deck, knocked the lens off and amazingly didn't fall out of the boat! I'm still using that one!
Just curious I should the fuel tank being installed the level with the floor or the bottom of the hull, I'm upgrading a fuel tank in my boat and just curious if my tank needs to be angled I can't seem to find any information online
How can you stop fuel from coming out of the vent when you overfill the tank or when you're fueling up I try to be conscientious keep an eye on my gauge and listen for fuel whistle. I'm pretty good about not overfilling but sometimes it happens.
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. When an aluminium tank is fabricated, what's the procedure for cleaning it out before installation? I had a new tank installed, have run about 70 gallons through it. My Racor filter is now so clogged with aluminum shavings it's starving the boat of fuel. Not good obviously. I'm very curious to hear your perspective on my issue.
I got it from a local welder, he made it by using the old tank as a template. You can call around to welders there in your area and see if they could make it for you. Or check with a larger company that specializes in fuel tanks, like RDS or someone. Sorry to hear about your tank :(
That's awesome! Thank you so much! It really does help for the RUclips Algorithm and shows them that people like the video so they will show it to more people :) Thank you!
I know this has nothing to do with the present video but is there a way to adjust the cold idle or start idle speed on a 2005 Yamaha 250 hpdi? It was shutting off repeatedly on starting, which seems to be not so uncommon. I pulled the vst off and cleaned it. Now it starts and runs but runs at about 500 rpms cold, while the other motor runs at 700-800 rpms when cold after starting. Once they warm up, they sync up at 6-700 rpms.
No, there's not really an adjustment for that, though the TPS can be adjusted, most likely it's not the problem though. HPDI's can be pretty touchy sometimes, I'm guessing you've changed the spark plugs, since you cleaned the VST. After it warms up it runs fine, hmmm. The OX-66's would run high when the thermostats would stick, but that's not the same for the HPDI. It would be nice to put it on a computer and see what all of the sensors are saying and what the fuel pressure is. After it warms up it runs fine for the rest of the day?
@@BornAgainBoating Yes, it runs like a champ the rest of the day with no issues at all. We routinely go out to some barrier islands about 15 miles offshore and stay for several hours. Even when it was having the shutting off problem when cold, it would start fine the rest of the day once you got it to idle after that first start. That's what got me to thinking it was a pressure issue between the diaphragm pumps and the high pressure pump which led me to cleaning the vst. I should have mentioned I replaced the low pressure diaphragms when I first started trying to fix the original problem of it not staying running for the first few attempts at a cold start after sitting for several days. I have not replaced the plugs since they were replaced recently. I was planning on changing plugs, cleaning the injectors, changing mystery filters and the other normal servicing this winter. This isn't really a big issue, it's more of a curiosity thing. The biggest mystery to me is when I cleaned the vst, there wasn't really anything to clean. The pump filter was clean, etc. I pulled the pump and hooked it up to power to verify it was running and when I put it together and back on the boat, it would crank and idle when before you would have to constantly squeeze the primer bulb for a couple of minutes on that engine to keep it idling. I'm sure it's some sensor somewhere and I have learned that hpdi's seem to be very touchy. If I get it figured out, I'll shoot you an e-mail and let you know what it was.
Awesome work as usual! Any reason in particular you went with another aluminum tank and not a plastic one? Most old aluminum tanks leak and I see most new boats come with plastic tanks..

@@BornAgainBoating My family has been in the aluminum business for over 60 years and I would not recommend putting any cheap carbon rubber against aluminum, the reason marine hoses and fuel lines are expensive is because they are made of butyl rubber and not the cheap carbon rubber which causes galvanic corrosion. Carbon is a conductor and allows current to flow that coupled with crevice corrosion will rot out a tank very quickly everywhere the rubber contacts it. You are better off 5200ing plastic strips directly to the bottom of the tank and then 5200ing that to the tank space. David Pasco has a good explanation. www.yachtsurvey.com/fueltank.htm Placing aluminum on cheap rubber mats issues are coming its only a matter of time.
I just replaced both my fill hose and vent hose. I measured the old fill hose and cut the new one to length. But looking at it installed it appears to dip below the tank fill inthe bilge before connecting to the tank. This appears to be why I was having issues when fueling. So should the hose stay above the tank? Looks like fuel could sit in the hose and cause it to fail
I dont know about the hose failing because of the fuel, but the issue with filling the tank would definitely connect with the hose being below the tank. That dip will fill up and cause filling issues for sure
It's for personal :) resale though really, we'll do a boat and then use it for a few months while doing another one, then sell them and start using the most recent one :)
Thank you! Hey I just noticed your comments on the control box! Sorry about that, I don't get notifications on replies to comments, just on new comments, so the replies get buried in the comment feed and I don't get time to scroll down and see them :( but I did see it this morning! The control box uses that CAN P network and something must have shorted out in it :( Now you said you disconnected the actual box itself, and left the trim and that can pad plugged in? Which basically means you need a control box :( They aren't that cheap but that's awesome that you got it figured out! I'm proud of you, that's some serious diagnostics there :) great job!
Yes I disconnected the trim plug and the harness the fuse did not blow. Plugged in the trim plug and did not blow and was able to trim engine up and down. The dealer came down after I told him where the shirt is coming from and he took the panel mounted DTS controller apart with the 4 screws and plugged it in an it didn’t short. Put everything back together and it is fine now. Can imagine what happened. He said those screws were a little loose when he took them apart. When I got down to the boat he already had it apart and plugged in so I could not see exactly what he did but that it’s working now. Thank you for your knowledge and helping point me in right direction to diagnose it. Without you I would never got that far. Thank You !!!
No, I've been on the fence about that for a long time now. I've seen tanks that were coated and the water get in under the coating and basically trap the water on the tank! Then I've seen uncoated tanks last just as long as the coated. It's a catch-22, the prepping and coating process has to be perfect for it to really work. Most places down here use a stuff called gluvit. It's an epoxy coating.
Born Again Boating I do like the holy rubber mats to allow air to dry the bottom out but I’ve seen more tanks with holes in the lid before the bottom but when pulled the whole tank had erosion ready for perforations
There are so many things wrong with this installation. Please do some research before attempting to replace a fuel tank unless you want to be ripping it back out way too soon.
Never use rubber material under an aluminum fuel tank because rubber contains carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and will cause galvanic corrosion. This fuel tank replacement is sloppy at best sorry to say.
I work for a marine mechanic shop up in ohio and was getting ready to do a yamaha trim ram job an saw you use a moto stop tool do you by chance have the part number so I can pick one up?
Depends on what engine you are working on, they have different ones for the V6-8 and what not. Yamaha has a new tool out though that you can get from K n L that does all their engines. Comes in a case and is basically this big socket that goes on each cap tool. It's pretty nice, if you guys are a Yamaha dealer maybe you could get it at cost ;)

It's for personal :) resale though really, we'll do a boat and then use it for a few months while doing another one, then sell them and start using the most recent one :)
Nice way to go 👍
Awesome video!
No man hole on the tank?
Wtf, how do you clean out the tank if you get growth in it?
Lol no, no man hole! Lot's of companies polish the fuel tank, they just take the sender out and cycle through the tank using a cleaner :)
Takes 10 seconds to take off the plastic on the new fill hose.....
LOL, heating the hose to get it pliable? I do the same for old stubborn wire sheathing that needs to be cut off on 40 year old wire!!!
No coal tar epoxy ? That’s all we do now
No, I've been on the fence about that for a long time now.
I would love a job doing this
how did your fill hose go on so easy ? mine took 15 min lol
Luck of the draw I guess lol, sometimes you can squirt them with some de greaser or soap if they are giving you trouble :)
Great video
Thank you!
Dr Phil????
There are so many things wrong with this installation. Please do some research before attempting to replace a fuel tank unless you want to be ripping it back out way too soon.
What was wrong
taco tuesday < technician tuesday #FACT
Now how can we make that trend?
@@BornAgainBoating #tacotuesday < TechnicianTuesday #FACT
Never use rubber material under an aluminum fuel tank because rubber contains carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and will cause galvanic corrosion. This fuel tank replacement is sloppy at best sorry to say.
Abel Vazquez agreed. Very sloppy.
What is the best way to carry auxiliary fuel on a sailboat?
nice work but the videos need to be longer
WORLDCAT 33
Yes! It's a World Cat! Nice Eye :)
first! :)
Hahah that's awesome :)
Very primitive , bad example...
@@BornAgainBoating Thanks look forward to your next videos
