The 1964 tsunami was far worse. It hit at night, and no one had any real knowledge of the phenomenon. The first wave tore things up, but everyone thought that there was only one wave. Many came down to the harbor as fast as they could after that first wave to inspect the damage. Unfortunately, the second wave was much larger. The third was less, but by then, many who had rushed to the harbor died. Others were swept away when the first and part of the second floor of the Surf Hotel was inundated. The wave destroyed everything in the business district near the ocean.

This is why the best thing for boats like this is to be out at sea, offshore, during a tsunami. Out there, nothing will happen to them.

One would think with Crescent City's past experience with a tsunami that those who've come down to the docks would take the warnings more seriously, there's nothing you can do about the boats at this point nor should you except to evacuate to higher ground on the chance that the tsunami surge gets higher which can happen, true a tsunami loses some of its power when crossing an ocean but if the Japan quake had been a higher magnitude like 9.2 or more this situation could have gotten much more dangerous and the possibility of lives lost due to irresponsibility.

Still shocking how much power it had after that far. Thousands of miles.

Sirens going off in the background. Sound of disaster approaching. Just a terrible sight. Unbelievable.

Can you imagine? It took less than a day for the tsunami to come from Japan to the USA.

Hardly worthy of mention compared to what happened on the other side of the Pacific.

Just so everyone knows, a lot of the people who took these videos were owners of these boats. Luckily, it was only our harbor that was destroyed.

We were there in July. Just an empty harbor now, no docks. Just one fishing boat. It really got hit hard.

I went to the beach and watched the tide go out further than I have ever seen. I got pics of the boats smashed up. This is a powerful video. It sure stirred up the feelings. Thank God there were no deaths here.

Holy Cow. Crescent City Harbor got hit hard. Did it get a wave like Santa Cruz Harbor or just a constant surge in and out? How many surges did it get? How high was each surge?

This had to be the next morning (3-12-'11) actually around 8-9 AM.
The waves took about 16 hrs to reach the west coast of the US
all the way from from Japan.

Tally Ho is the only charter out of Crescent City...and he will also do funerals at sea (from his ad). Crescent city has been hit before by Tsunami, Alaska '64...and will be hit again.
