Shawn Yao Robomaster’s program seems to take Dean Kamen’s philosophy of making STEM like a sport to its extreme. While at their core they are both robotics competitions I think they are pretty fundamentally different. FRC’s focus is on making high school teams build functional 120 pound robots with basic materials and provided components like motors and processing units, and then programming them so that the drive team can actually use the robot efficiently and effectively. The experience doesn’t change much because the participants are all in high school, they only participate for four years before they leave the program. Robomaster seems to be much more focused on the sport-y and entertainment of it, which is really cool and something I think we need more of to further interest students. It also seems to focus more on actual AI (or at least the ICRA event does) so that robots can compete completely autonomously. I am not completely up to speed about robomaster, but it looks like it is really only for programming and operating while FRC is for building, programming, and operating.
As captain a Robomaster team at UCSD I hope the competition gets more popular here, it’s a lot of fun and covers a wide spectrum of skills. It's meant to be accessible so getting started isn't hard but the level of engineering and programming that you can out in to polish these 40 lb machines is something else. Plus it's got the whole e-sport production! :)
