Bright Eyes was written for the film version of Richard Adams' Watership Down a story about rabbits, this song by by Mike Batt. "The song relates to the transition from life to death. This is highlighted by Hazel, initially when wounded by a farmer's gun. Finally, at the end of the short animal life-span, Hazel (then Hazel-rah) departs his body and enters a spirit world."
I never read the book until I moved to a house on a street named after the book. The developer must have loved the book because several of the streets around me are named after characters in the book. The reference to bright eyes and burning pale is because of how the light goes out of eyes when someone dies.
My mother read us Watership Down as kids (she also read us Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit etc. she was a hippie 😅) and I remember I was so upset by it. Then we watched the movie a few years later and my younger brother was traumatised and couldn’t sleep without the light on for a few years lol. I love the story though even though it disturbed me as a kid.
The lyrics reflect the thoughts of a group of small woodland animals trying to understand the mystery of death. A song of exceptional beauty, elevated by Art's ethereal, flawless vocal performance. ❤
As lots of people have pointed out, this song is about dying. You’d think an animation couldn’t be that affecting, but when you hear this song in the context of what’s happening in the film and you see what’s being depicted on screen, just… OMG 😭😭
Art has a voice that will be listened to for centuries into the future. Cherished he will be like Mozart and Bach. A one of a kind, a gift to us for all of time to be enjoyed forever.
As others have said, this was written for the animated film Watership Down. It's set in the idyllic English countryside and the characters are rabbits. It's all about their trials and tribulations and is actually quite a dark film. It looks even more quintessentially English because it's done with watercolour painting, giving the rolling hilly landscapes a soft dreamy feeling, which contradicts the film's dark feel. This song is played when one of the main rabbit characters is dying after a fight. Well worth watching.
His voice is so pure and clear, it makes you feel every word that flows from his soul. Once upon a time, long ago when we made our favorite song lists on tape cartridges, his song "99 Miles to LA" was right up there on mine amongst all that great rock of those times. Please consider listening for yourself even if you don't think it's for your videos. It hits you hard about when you are trying to get to the love of your life. Medium tempo.❤❤❤
I remember so vividly hearing this paired with Watership Down when I was a lot younger and it made me cry. An absolutely beautiful song, thanks for the reaction.
I love this song even though it is a song about dying. It's from the animated movie, Watership Down which was out in the late 1970's. I loved the book and the movie. I used to play this on flute.
Best love song ever ,, "ill stand by you" . from the pretenders !!!!!!! Jus an amzing song 🎵 support the one u love thru thick n thin !!! Jus love that song !!.crissy the lead singer wrote it herself !!! ❤❤
Oh I cried. Cried for a long time after as a teenager when I watched it. I cannot watch it as an adult because I was so affected by the book and movie… and this song 😢
Definitely! Watership Down is a must watch. Unfortunately adults, unfamiliar with the novel or the movie trusted the "G" rating it got, and traumatized a whole generation of kids .... It is not a children's story. It's horrific in so many places, but still fantastic.
Art's portfolio is absolutely superb. I HIGHLY recommend that you take the time to listen to his solo works. I'd strongly recommend his 1975 album, Breakaway. But all of his LP's are just wonderful. Yes, Paul was the songwriter and quite a performer in his own right. But, anyone who thought Art would just fade away after their breakup was sorely mistaken. Art sings songs written by numerous different songwriters, including a number of songs by Jimmy Webb, a well respected composer (who was born and raised in my state of Oklahoma). As always, thank you for sharing. So glad you liked this. Steve
Art's using a particular singing technique that opens the throat and pushes out the a high yet hollo-ish sound. Andy Williams also uses a similar technique but with a lower hollowish baritone sound.
Wikipedia: "Bright Eyes" is a song written by British songwriter Mike Batt and performed by Art Garfunkel. "Bright Eyes" topped the UK Singles Chart for six weeks and became Britain's biggest-selling single of 1979, selling over a million copies. Richard Adams, author of the original novel, is reported to have hated the song.[2] A cover of the song was later used explicitly in the Watership Down television series as its theme song.
Thanks for the reaction! I suggest you react to my friend Maro and my sister singing the song they took to Eurovision to represent Portugal. It’s really special and would love to hear your thoughts 😊❤️
I guess if you want high voices and chills..in a similar vein.you could go with Dan Fogelberg "To the Morning" "The River"or John Denver " Rocky Mountain High" ,"Leaving on a Jet Plane"or America "Ventura Highway or Bread "Guitar Man" "Everything I Own" or Seals and Crofts " We May Never Pass this Way Again" "Summer Breeze"..I could go another 100 deep but you'll get the picture ( this is a short list suggestion ..there are a lot from these five and others that might work
OMG, you’re the first person that has ever mentioned Dan Fogelberg, I love him (RIP Dan) he was opening for the Eagles in ‘75 in NJ and that was my very first concert, I had never heard of DF, but fell in love with his voice and his songs (and him, best looking man ever!!) But been listening to him since ‘75 and I still love his beautiful voice and songs. So glad someone else besides me, knows his songs!

Hi Polo hope you are well. I have a request of you to play a song by the artists Jon and Vangelis. The song is called (I,ll find my way home) released in 1981. I think you will love this beautiful song. Thank you. 🙋🇮🇪❤️👍😁
I’ve been listening to this song when it first came out, but just recently, the song was played on the final episode of Black Mirror at the onset of a nuclear apocalypse in such a way that I cannot think of this song ever again without thinking of this incredible final scene. I don’t know if everyone here has seen it yet, but you probably should. ruclips.net/video/RumxQiK1tIc/видео.html - the song just fits perfectly for some reason.

A truly evil song! You think it's beautiful and soothing and then you realise its about the death of bunnies. Yes the film watership down traumatized me.
The songwriter, Mike Batt, was asked to write a song about death for the soundtrack to Watership Down. He said his father was dying of cancer at the time and that was his inspiration for the song so it’s about death and isn’t specifically about bunnies.
Truly EVIL? That's a bit much, lol. It is sad and touching, and addresses coming to the end of life. In the movie (which was indeed traumatizing for most children because it wasn't supposed to be a children's movie in the first place, but it was one of my favorites anyway) Fiver was looking for his brother Hazel, who'd been wounded, and was guided through the forest by the Black Rabbit of Death, a beneficent figure kind of like an angel but of the rabbit underworld. There is nothing evil about the Richard Adams' story or this song.

Watership Down… Required reading in school. I’ll have to find the movie.
@@zubee1 I have read that several US schools have banned it due to the content which describes some "violence" (to the life of rabbits, some death).

This is a soft snd tender song about loss. I sing this to all my rescued animals when their lives end.
Same.
The lyrics reflect the thoughts of a group of small woodland animals trying to understand the mystery of death. A song of exceptional beauty, elevated by Art's ethereal, flawless vocal performance. ❤
Its far deeper than just animals...its about death in general.
my sister passed when she was 3 years old and this song always reminds me of her. 40 years later and i'm still shedding tears - so beautiful
Music that is unfortunately no longer made like this today. Just pure, real and honest music.
This is the song I wanted you to listen to after Bridge Over Troubled Water. Thanks for doing this. Its magical 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

When I first heard this I was lost for words, Art Garfunkel’s vocals are breathtaking. Every time I hear this it sends chills down my spine ❤️
