BALLET PANTY TUTORIAL & DANCER PERIOD PAD TUTORIAL:- From a designer who has worked with ballerinas! I am friends with a professional ballet dancers who actually asked me to make underwear that goes inside the tights. Your period doesn’t stop if you have a show and that’s not okay to expect a woman to dance with a tampon in on potentially a WHITE outfit. For context I’m a product designer but I currently am trying to get back into doing set (wherever accessible) and doing a lot of freelance costume construction. Anyways, Here is the run down from a very immobile girlie (wheelchair user) who’s a designer to my active ballet dancer girlies. Obviously can’t exactly test this first hand but I’ve had only positive feedback so far. So the trick is to get a pair of extremely good seamless panties, the hollister Nude seamless laser cut thong is what I used then what you can do is cut the protective panty pouch element off of A DIFFERENT thong PAIR and sew on the front and the back on top of the thong. You will now have a little flap that opens at each side. This is YOUR WING HOLDER LADIES!!! so you now get your pad (I’ll have a cutting and taping tutorial lower down in my comment) and you get some double sided tape, you stick the pad perfectly on and peel the tabs for the wings (these wings are small as you’ll see in my lower comment) and you can easily tape these into the little flap wing holder. You then pull up and you have a perfectly seamless ballet proof pad to stop any leakage. Obviously please wear a tampon this isn’t just for on its own. I’d always suggest going for the most comfortable size for you DONT just go big or go home as you’ll be hella uncomfortable and believe me I know people who regretted this. Go for the most appropriate size. Dress as normal and you’ll be good! So Pad Tutorial! You’ll need:- Some Lilettes Teens Pads (Dailies - light blue with white hearts) Scissors ✂️ Hyperfix Tape is best but other tapes do work. Double sided tape (To also be wearing a tampon if you’re on your period as this is like a little back up) Paper (not essential) - only if you want to regularly repeat the process (Extra step) You want to open up your pad and if you want to do this often make a template of the thong (any part that the pad could touch) and draw around it. It should look like two lines that don’t touch but go diagonally towards each other at the bottom end. Lay this over the pad and mark with cuts where you need to trim it (ensure not to cut the wings) now cut the sides down to match the template. Now if you didn’t do the paper template open the pad and lay this over your panties and cut a mark of where you need to trim so they line up. Once you’ve done this you need to trim along those lines avoiding the wings. Now you have your trimmed pad ready to tape. Measure and cut the Hyperfix tape so it’s as big as the open cut on the side of the pad. Tape it vertically so half is over the edge, now fold it over to seal the pad cotton inside (do this to all edges you cut). Now you whip out that double sided tape. Cut it to the size of the reverse side of the pad and lay strips down. You need it secure! Peel the strips off and adhere carefully to the panties. Now you’ll want to remove the wings tab and double sided tape those too! Once you have the tape on remove the backing and stick the wings one at a time into the thong wing holder flap (tutorial at the top) these will overlap inside and do this on either side. Pad is now secure ladies and gentlemen! Pull up and smooth out around your body, you can use a hairdryer to improve the adhesive but not essential. Smooth out at the front to avoid any camel toe situations and then put on your tights. Check in the mirror and I doubt you can see a thing! Perfect! Now if you have a drop from you tampon string or any significant discharge (not on your period) no issue! Period blood 🩸 is nothing to be ashamed of but personally I believe dancers should have the right to choose what protection for their period or just day to day wear they use. This hack has helped many dancers I’ve designed or customised clothing for. Please let me know if you’d like a video tutorial and I’ll do one! I really hope even one person finds this comment useful! All The Love ❤
😂 we were giving seamless underwear that was skin tone or slightly darker because we were at the age that periods were a thing. And the wife of one of the instructors did modeling so she gave it as a suggestion and ever since then it just rolled
I GREW up in ballet, so the no underwear rule was so normal to me i thought it was like a widely known thing that was followed by all dancers to just know that when you danced and wore tights and leotards it was no underwear. I also thought it wasn’t like “weird” to some bcs it was just so normal to me. To this day it feels weird for me to dance with underwear and tights bcs that’s just not how I grew up dancing. But I do totally get why many would feel weird. Oh not to mention I did a dance show at school once, wasn’t for ballet or anything, just the dance elective show, and the girls were sooo weirded out by the “I don’t want to see underwear lines” thing and I was like “you guys wear underwear under your tights and leotard” and they were like “u don’t?!?” And u was like “no, you don’t do that in ballet.💁🏻♀️” and that’s the moment I realized it was not a known by all, normal thing abt dance that everyone happened to know💀😭😂
I hated the now underwear rule. Specially when on my period. My mom used to make me wear pads instead of tampons. I will forever remember the distinctive sound the pad made as it sticked and unsticked from my tights 🫣
that's really interesting, bc in my country (or at least where i dance) this was never a thing. i can't even imagine wearing my tights without underwear. but the guys definitely always wear a dance belt instead of regular underwear
I never thought about it until I started working for a ballet school. The way the parents would freak out when buying supplies for dance camp each summer!
I find it weird that theirs a no underwear rule because viwers in the audience shouldn't be looking down there anyway so it wouldn't make a difference to the performance, also how would the person in charge know you're wearing underwear?
if you wear underwear and it creates a line through your tights, then the viewer's eyes will automatically focus on that. If everything is seamless, then no one will even think about the dancers' underwear.
It’s the same with gymnastics too. When i was 7, my dance teacher said to me and the other 20 girls in the changing room that we couldnt wear our underwear. I was absolutely mortified because all the girls were just walking around completely naked. I remember i had to get my dance instructor to cover me because i was not comfortable changing like that.
For performances most dancers wear a special thin, skin toned leotard or very thin underwear made specifically for dance (kinda like spanx ig) but for classes and rehearsals we just wear our leotards and tights. It really isn’t uncomfy at all 😊
I had the "no underwear" talk with my instructor when I was around 8 (the whole class together, not one on one) but I dont remember any of us at that age doing it and my mom always bought me skin coloured underwear anyway bc I was also ice skating and the issue with underwear showing is the same. As I grew older I had more modern instructors who never talked to us about it and I'm very glad of that but yes, it's a rule normally.
My brother does ballet, and he initially got dance belts with full butt coverage, but his peers at the school made fun of him after a certain age, so he had to get the thong style.

We are allowed to wear underwear in the studio but I just don’t because I have such a big habit of no underwear with tights like even if I’m wearing tights for something else 😅
My school only had a no bras rule but they were pretty lax about it so long as it was black ( our uniform color) or nude since many girls had to change quickly between classes. plus many of us wore skirts so it wasn’t an issue
My studio would say that once you begin level 3 which for them was about 12-15 then no underwear. I do remember having to double up on compression sports bras because I had such a large chest in middle and high school. My teachers were always so angry about it but I couldn’t change it. It was just my body
I will add that if you are a guy dressing up as spiderman, black panther, deadpool, superman or any other body suit character, please do not go commando and wear a dance belt. Convention goers will thank you.
my husband went to school for theatre and they made him wear a dance belt for dance classes, they said “the thongs are for dancers, the full coverage ones are for spidermen” 😂

I would be to scared, bc doing jumps and stuff, the tighs might become transparent, and everybody would see everything, and thats just..weird especially for young kids

I just realized that barely anyone outside of ballet knows that women arent allowed to wear underwear. I did it when i was younger but I never put much thought into it.
When I had a dance belt I refused to wear a thong so my mum bought a pair that was just regular underwear and did the same job but I only just hit puberty when I wore them so they it didnt really matter
I once sat front row in a performance of Swan Lake where uh... I'm just going to say, I don't think the guy playing the prince had his belt on properly 😭

At a Nutcracker performance my friend’s granddaughters were giggling on and off. Afterwards I asked what they were laughing at and grandma said “when the man dancer came out on stage in his white tights, they were laughing at his butt.”
I mean just wear a thong? No offense but who came up with the idea to just wear... nothing? And also just the women... Weird. I love how people are always talking about how twerking or belly dance is indecent or too revealing, what about this though 🧐
Thongs didn't exist when ballet was invented. So now it is tradition
@@ThisSideoftheNuthouse tradition is the solution to a problem that doesn't exist anymore as they say
@@ThisSideoftheNuthouse Oh. Did tights exist? I'm curious because stretch materials were limited to knits until fairly recently as well. So I'm curious about what ladies who were training since childhood were wearing to cover their intimate parts while dancing.
Bro girls definitely wear underwear, there are dancewear brands that sell tan panties as dance underwear for a ridiculous up sell because we have to wear panties sometimes - like when you're on your period. And girls with big boobs are strongly encouraged by costumes departments to wear supportive bras
At my studio we were allowed to wear thongs but mostly just no underwear. Finding thongs that fit a 7 year old is hard lol
Thongs that small were likely designed by fashion companies ran by creeps…
@@mayrahemmerechts5867 probably, but hopefully it’s mostly dance wear companies who understand the struggle for dance moms trying to have their kid atleast wear something, yk? Hopefully that’s the case.
@@mayrahemmerechts5867no, no creep will sell something for which there’s no demand. Small thongs are sold for gymnasts (who tend to be very small) and dancers
How would you even look??
@@honeythunder sometimes it was just the smallest sizes they had at regular companies like aerie or la vie en rose other times it was dance wear companies
My school's rule was thongs only, and exclusively skin toned for performances. Basically the rule was that they shouldn't be able to see that you're wearing any. For figure skating, they said no underwear for competitions
You’ll need:-
Some Lilettes Teens Pads (Dailies - light blue with white hearts)
Scissors ✂️
Hyperfix Tape is best but other tapes do work.
Double sided tape
(To also be wearing a tampon if you’re on your period as this is like a little back up)
Paper (not essential) - only if you want to regularly repeat the process
(Extra step) You want to open up your pad and if you want to do this often make a template of the thong (any part that the pad could touch) and draw around it.
I’m not a dancer but we gotta love the heart and energy and advice your giving to anyone who needs it ❤
Commenting because this is cool information.
Oh not to mention I did a dance show at school once, wasn’t for ballet or anything, just the dance elective show, and the girls were sooo weirded out by the “I don’t want to see underwear lines” thing and I was like “you guys wear underwear under your tights and leotard” and they were like “u don’t?!?” And u was like “no, you don’t do that in ballet.💁🏻♀️” and that’s the moment I realized it was not a known by all, normal thing abt dance that everyone happened to know💀😭😂
I was so mesmerized by the dancing that I had to watch a second time to actually hear what you were saying !
I forget how beautifully effortless ballet appears... and the remember how hard the dancers work to make it look that way...beautiful and painful
It's like wearing a one-piece swimsuit. You don't really wear anything underneath cause it looks weird. Lol.
Essentially a jock strap with no cup.
That high jumper needed a dance belt!!! If you know you know.
My brother does ballet, and he initially got dance belts with full butt coverage, but his peers at the school made fun of him after a certain age, so he had to get the thong style.
Crazy to be made fun of for not wearing a thong 😅
AHHHH, I would just like to appreciate the male duet in the background at the last bit cause hdhdhdhdh it’s so stunning!! The strength and gracefulness is just ✨✨!! If anyone knows what the dance is from I would love to know!! SLAYYYY 👏👏💫
for females: what if ur on ur period? What do yall do abt that? cuz i aint bleedin through a $3,000 tutu
There are seamless, skin toned underwear. The no underwear rule also includes small kids I think it was a rule made by PDF files and it has lived on
We are allowed to wear underwear in the studio but I just don’t because I have such a big habit of no underwear with tights like even if I’m wearing tights for something else 😅
as a dancer I always wear underwear lol idc what anyone says. I just wear a nude seamless thong and no one ever sees any lines
I always wore nude underwear. Never even considered not doing it 😂
A dance belt is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen😂
I would wear underwear just to feel safe and comfortable.
it wont be safe nor comfortable
my husband went to school for theatre and they made him wear a dance belt for dance classes, they said “the thongs are for dancers, the full coverage ones are for spidermen” 😂
I love the fact that you don't mind talking about these things on your channel.
Guys I’ve never heard of this rule. I’ve always worn thin, high cut seamless underwear that are tan and it never showed through my pink tights. I’ve always felt pretty comfortable wearing it. But this is crazy especially as women 😮😂
Dont forget the tuck and swoop!
I wish they had seamless bras for is female dancers 😮
Those athletes need to wear those. Terrible how they got them running
I went to a theater arts college in nyc and my first dance class, I remember writing down all the required shoes, leotards and tights I would need and raised my hand to ask where I could buy a “dance belt”.
I’m a girl 🥲
Dancer for ten years here, still had no idea about this!
The more i learn about ballet, the less i would want to do it. It just sounds horrible. You can not wear underwear and your feet get fucked
I did google dance belt. They make full seat dance belts too. I qas wondering about this because i find g strings very uncomfortable and I'm sure other people might too.
I would be to scared, bc doing jumps and stuff, the tighs might become transparent, and everybody would see everything, and thats just..weird especially for young kids
What do you do on your period? I’ve done ballet for 8 years (not professional as I’m not 18 yet) and we wear underwear so I’m normally ok with a pad
Probably use a tampon or those cup thingy
Tampons mostly, and at my studio we were allowed to wear black tights or dance shorts for class on our periods.
Im glad dance belts are atleast softer than baseball cups cause my best friend will finish any game and then complain the whole time in pure misery. Im glad im not in baseball
Can you show some of your contemporary ballet performances?? I watched the show u put on RUclips & I’m obsessed!!!💃🏼🕺🏻💖🩰🪩
i think ballet primed me to love going commando lol
I’d be too scared of something popping out of my leotard if I didn’t wear underwear if yk what I mean😂
I don't do professional dance or anything but I'm in 9th grade and 2 years ago is when they finally started talking about not wearing bras and underwear
I’d love to see the engagement graph for this video, how many others clicked off to google it and realise that guys get to wear underwear, they just call it something else.
Thank you! Finally an answer to my question. I am greatful!
My daughter was in ballet for years during childhood and there was never a no underwear rule or thongs. Thongs didn't even exist then.
What?? You haven't heard of ballet knickers??
i think of spiderman and his cup-thong under the suit 😭😭😭
I just realized that barely anyone outside of ballet knows that women arent allowed to wear underwear. I did it when i was younger but I never put much thought into it.
Started dance at 1 1/2 with the no underwear rule never even questioned it 🤷🏻♀️
as a dancer it’s interesting to see how the rules change around the world- i never wore underwear with my tights and leos since i can remember.
When in doubt, I just finger spell everything 😂
When I had a dance belt I refused to wear a thong so my mum bought a pair that was just regular underwear and did the same job but I only just hit puberty when I wore them so they it didnt really matter
Geez they're pricey too. Just looked at the first store that popped up and it was $53 AUD
what if a girls on her period but doesn’t like to use tampons for example i prefer period underwear
I once sat front row in a performance of Swan Lake where uh... I'm just going to say, I don't think the guy playing the prince had his belt on properly 😭
I have seen them many of times from my brother who also does ballet with me.😅😂
It's basically padding with a piece of literal floss coming up your butt( Mail dancer here)
Hold up so yall dont wear underwear underneath all that??
And if that dance belt is missing or doesn't fit well, you can definitely tell. 👀
Ngl kinda weird that it’s a thing in the first place. Out of context if a belt like that was handed to an 8 year old child that person would be investigated and put on a list 😂

I was a gymnast as a kid and we were also supposed to not wear underwear under our leotards and it was weird and humiliating and from an adult standpoint its completely effed up. I am an adult now myself and the thought of forcing a child to not wear underwear under their teeny tiny bodysuits while there's adults watching? Fck no. Makes me sick to my stomach. Just the thought of how exposed you actually feel doing spilts when there's only 4cm of fabric between your legs...It makes my blood boil, kids deserve so much better
As an adult I'll never feel comfortable enough without underwear but I think since they start as kids, they get used to it
I’m so glad we’re allowed to wear underwear at my studio (the dance kind) for performances
Anyone who was in dance tell me your story about what you had to wear!!!
Dance belts are ... not comfortable. But they make you look great in tights.
Ok when u got your period, WHAT DO U WEAR UNDERNEATH because there is no way your tights will help.
Edit: Pads seem to stick fine enough in the tights for dancers to wear them. They might not be the most comfortable but they work :)
You might have to wear either a tampon, menstruation cup, or a menstruation disk. There is little room for a pad and with all the movement and sweat, it might not hold well in the tights.
@@fuchsfarbennot necessarily. I've stuck pads on my tights before while performing. Was it the most comfortable thing? No. Did it do its job? Better than you'd expect. I did however stick two pads on top of one another just in case (even tho it turned out it wasn't necessarily, but better safe than sorry ig). I know other dancers who have done the same.
@@F00L_Of_A_Took Ah, then excuse my comment. I only ever knew of dancers using other methods! Nice to see that pads aren't entirely out of the question for people :)
I’d recommend menstrual cups or tampons.
I haven't met anyone who didn't wear tampons for ballet. Seems that some people use pads, but it's going to be harder to deal with that way. Personal preference
How does no underwear work for the girls? That sounds uncomfortable. What if someone is on their period?
I danced ballet for 12 years and never heard of the no underwear rule. At my studio everyone whore underwear and I also never whore thongs. But my teacher wasn’t really strict overall:)
I wonder why there isn’t something specific for a woman too? Why only for the guy?
She kinda explained it in the video. Guys have more "obvious" stuff that needs to be held in place
that is so cool
Same thing for gymnasts
Wait really? That's so much faith put into one leotard
I always wore mine and it would show and be all annoying with the pantyhose.
I did ballet from 4-13 tho
And strict clothing rules so no skirts or extras just the assigned clothes and I would have two at some point cause I was taking multiple classes and because I'm chaotic I'd forget the right one and be the one idiot in purple or blue in a sea of the other one and I'd get into so much trouble each time (just practice not on stage)
Ive wanted to give ballet a chance. However the no underwear rule is absurd and completely inappropriate for a teacher to strip you of choice.
Have any of you disobeyed? And what would I be in store for if I refused to take my underwear off? Because no.
i did ballet for about a year when i was 9, they didn't enforce the no underwear rule and if they had, i wouldn't have done ballet that year. i have awful sensory issues and i do think i would have had a meltdown lmao but, we were getting pointe shoes when i left because the cost was more than doubled for the next years classes. this video pulled that memory from the vault lol
Ive never heard about this in sweden
we wernt ment to wear underwear omg this makes so much sense
So as an E cup traditional ballet costumes would be difficult huh
I mean nude seamless underwear exists... so why is no underwear still a thing 👀 especially with children 😬
Because the tights are the “underwear.” That’s why they have a gusset patch.
