Interesting points about doubling up on hearing protection. Yes there's more exposure indoors, but the high amplitide impulses are effectively the same. It is advisable to wear double protection whenever you are shooting a number of shots. The reduction of a rifle shot by 30 or 35 dB still leaves you in the 130 to 140 dB range.
Here are a couple of articles about firearms measured outdoors and firearm suppressors also measured outdoors. The peak sound pressure levels range from 140 to about 175 dB SPL. The suppressed peak levels ranged from 120 to 151 dB peak SPL. With the suppressor, the levels are sufficiently high that hearing protection should still be worn. I only taking a few shots, single protection w/o suppression may be acceptable. If firing more than a few shots, for instance at a firing range, then double protection would be advisable. These electronic muffs should all provide about the peak reduction indicated by the NRR. Safety glasses will affect the performance significantly, 8 to 15 dB less, depending upon the size of the leak introduced by the temples pieces of the glasses under the muff cushion. NIOSH recommends wearing dual protection when firing weapons. Electronic and moderately attenuating earplug. Hearing protection is not just for when you're shooting guns but for any noisy environment or activity. I have tinnitus which I believe I got from being in noisy server rooms. My choice is the 3M Peltor Optime 105 H10A earmuffs because they have an awesome 30db NRR. Whether I am at the racetrack, workshop or even just mowing the lawn, shredding paper or vacuuming I'll slap them. I also have a pair in the office for those times when I want to block out the general chatter or when the fire alarm goes off.
This is maybe THE best informative video on RUclips about a quality earpro comparison with usable facts and great insight for someone, like me, that doesn't have any ear pro that wont cause headaches. Thanks very much for this G.T.
Just FYI - Peltor have a "tactical" headband that is made to be more comfortable under a helmet and is almost identical to the band of the MSA headset. I've used it for years and it is phenomenal and significantly more comfortable than a typical headband when wearing a helmet. You can get the Sordin comfort with the Peltor protection.
@Vince Nav With a high cut you lose a lot of side coverage, which can make a difference if you are around fragmentation hazards. Also a lot of guys are wearing ballistic mandibles these days (also due to the frag) which ride very similarly to a full cut. IMO high cuts are good when you are prioritizing stop and listen, such as a scout role or LE, while full cuts are better if you are actually expecting to fight.
Truly amazing video, finally found all the answers I'd been searching for. I actually went with the Ops-Core, pricey AF but your coupon code saved a ton, sincerely appreciated, you literally just covered the earplug package...you are the ultimate tactical Santa! Bottom line, 34db noise reduction with the NMFI earplugs and accurate directional sound is priceless. Indoor, outdoor, good to go. Ya get one pair of ears, do whatever it takes to take care of them, and thankfully the Ops-Core don't sacrifice any situational awareness to accomplish that. Thanks again!
I always forget my hearing protection. At this point I just use the old McDonalds receipts in my car as ear pro by chewing them up and putting them in my ears. Works great.

EQUALIZER (decibel) RANGE capability is what you are describing. It's the same as any pro audio gear: the cheaper the parts and design, the more minimal the eq capability of the hardware is. As a sound engineer, I like that the peltors have an individual R/L eq level finder. Most people's ears have different eq damage levels, so that's a cool feature*
My (almost deaf) brother put a pair of the Walker Razor Electronic earmuffs, weird hearing him respond to me from across a busy room. He immediately bought a pair.
$900 for those isn’t unreasonable for the “best” quality for a professional headset for real situation use. It’s fine to get a $50 headset for going to the range on weekends but if your job consists of shooting things for a living or you just shoot multiple thousand rounds per month, it’s worth it. Sound clarity and comfort is key when it comes to expensive audio equipment. Bose makes the A20 Aviation headset that virtually all professional pilots use, they are about $1,100. But they are the best at what hey do, cancel noise while being extremely comfortable for use all day.
Thank you for this video, not enough on utube reminds the “youth” of the danger and seriousness of hearing damage. I always doubled up and I never imagine a nightmare called tinnitus that started in midlife. Hearing loss is culmative. Shooting, motorcycles etc. you won’t notice it at 20,30,or40 unless you do something stupid. Hearing loss is PAINFUL. If you have chronic tinnitus your life will never be the same again. It can render you useless as you adjust to living with it. 24/7, 7 days a week it rings. Some days are so bad you will need a fan on all the time and a dark room. People KILL themselves. Never shoot indoors, even when you double up. You are absorbing alll the rounds in there, limit your time to 15-20 minutes then get out. There is no cure for tinnitus. Doctors are clueless If you already suffer from depression, anxiety, or ptsd, it is a serious condition that I believe leads to a lot of veteran suicides. I am active with a tinnitus counselor and I have counseled others. . In the last 4 yrs I’ve spent 10K plus on out of pocket medical.
Your story sounds a lot like mine... Im usaf vet. A lot of money and life burned up..... If not for my wife i know my demise would happen.... Good luck brother... Keep your head up..
I’m 45 and have had tinnitus since I was 19. It’s actually very easy to damage your hearing. In the 90’s adults never warned anyone about the dangers. Between hunting, concerts, sporting events, bars, headphone use, ect. it takes a toll.
I’m that guy in the military that administers audiograms. I’ve seen many a aircrew, maintainers, and AFSOC guys/gals that can’t hear for shit now. I’d personally recommend doubling up if you can. Although, I know it’s not always practical. The most important aspect of in ear protection is ensuring they are fitted and in properly. It’s pretty common to have two different sized ear canals. We see a lot of asymmetric hearing loss due to lack of a proper fit in both ears or improper insertion. Also, I really appreciate this content. I think it’s a topic not covered nearly enough.
Hey I know this is late. Molten metal Slag got into my ear because I wasn't wearing them while plasma cutting. 2 surgeries later and I have permanent loss of the left side about 60% Ear pro is a must to protect from other environmental issues outside of loud noises. Hope this saves someone's hearing one day
Got a pair of MSA Sordin Pro (neck band) with gel cups standard that I've worn everyday for three years at an Amazon fulfillment center. Mine last 600 hours on average (yes 600 running on low volume), go through new ear cups (hygiene kits) every year. Wear them everyday for 10 hours each day and can confirm the noise pickup issue. You get used to it but situational awareness takes a hit. Often doing double takes on what is being said under conveyor whine, pallets crashing, and jacks clanking along.
I literally just went down the rabbit hole of electronic ear muff shopping and my biggest fucking hero in plaid has once again guided me to the promise land. Love you daddy.

Love that you did this review! This has me wanting to pick up a pair of AMPs. You may or may not be familiar with them since they're ancient, but before Peltors and Sordins, Gentex had Wolf Ears back in the 80s and 90s. They were huge, but something that has continually pissed me off is their directional sound reproduction and pass-through sound quality is an order of magnitude better than Sordins and Peltors despite being ancient (I still have my 1030As from back then). The AMP sounds like Gentex might have given audio reproduction the Wolf Ears treatment. I need a pair...

The Peltor ComTac XPI is the best, as I can pretend that the UI female voice is an actual woman speaking to me.
Sad...but true
I just shrug my shoulders up high and bring my neck in like a turtle. Works great.

A nice juicy tampon works good too.
Lose the “headband” clip them to the sides of your helmut
Do you know where I could find that?
@Vince Nav Them's expensive
@Vince Nav Yeah used stuff can usually get picked up pretty affordably. I don't have the money right now so I haven't been looking around too much
@Vince Nav With a high cut you lose a lot of side coverage, which can make a difference if you are around fragmentation hazards.

Can you give an update on how you like them? I am waiting for a sale. They are PRICEY
I always forget my hearing protection. At this point I just use the old McDonalds receipts in my car as ear pro by chewing them up and putting them in my ears. Works great.

@@mrick1974 no. Not stereo. You cannot identify direction of noise. I run cheap ass howard leight impact sports, but they work well, are stereo, and aux Jack plays input superimposed over ambient noise.
Can I hook the Peltors to my XBox? Mommy clangs the pots and pans too much when cooking me dinner.

I am active with a tinnitus counselor and I have counseled others. . In the last 4 yrs I’ve spent 10K plus on out of pocket medical.
aka, spend the 90-1000 bucks now, save a lifetime of sanity and pain. Roger roger. Probs gonna get me a Peltor for Christmas as a gift for myself.

Soulful Repose is a US Army veteran. 😊🎗🗣 ... shes awesome!

It almost sounds like you are embarrassed of us down here in the comment section! It's alright we love you anyway!

I literally just went down the rabbit hole of electronic ear muff shopping and my biggest fucking hero in plaid has once again guided me to the promise land. Love you daddy.
With the new REV6 Digital Sound Processing the sound quality of Liberator is better than before. And I really like TCI’s Digital Situational Awareness Enhancement which can increase the sound a lot louder than MSA Sordin. Yes you will get more noise but useful in some demanding situations.
As a trans F-35, I really appreciate you being such a inclusive and diverse channel. I’m so proud of this community.

But dad, how do we hack ourselves into YOUR COMMS?

This is serious stuff hear! (pun intended) 35 years ago I decided I didn't need hearing protection for a Saturday shooting adventure I was going on. That day I was excited to shoot my new HOT loads for my Dan Wesson. After the 1st 6 rounds I couldn't hear! The ringing lasted a few days, after that I went to the ear doctor, I had lost 80% of my hearing my right ear and 50% in my left. That was 35 years ago. . .Today I have to use hearing aids if I want to hear any conversation. . .WEAR HEARING & EYE PROTECTION. . .When I worked at McDonnell Douglas we used David Clarke headsets, I always thought they were the standard for QUALITY when standing behind a turbine engine!
"Flang"? "FLANG"?! There's an e on the end of that word for a reason!
I don’t use electronic ear pro. They don’t drown out grunting, splashing, and straining. Or the final flush.
You can triple protect, with foam plugs in the ear canal, silicone plugs in the outer ear, and muffs over the top
So smooth with the restarts he didn't even catch them on post production
