    Never go cheap on your comms. Your life may depend on it. People buy the best rifles, pistols survival gear then go as cheap as possible with a low quality radio that’s probably the most important piece of equipment in your kit..

    As a nerd, I recommend getting the Baofeng UV-9G. It's advertised as a GMRS radio, but you can program in any of the radio frequencies that the UV-5R can use. It costs a little more ($45 or so) and the you can't swap the batteries as quickly, but it's waterproof to a few feet. It you live in a harsher climate that extra protection is really nice. The accessories are not compatible between the models (except for the antennas), so it will be harder (not impossible) to recreate this setup with the UV-9G.
    That all being said, I never fried a Baofeng UV-5R in the rain. But the increase in protection is nice without much increase in cost.

    • @justsomeguyontheinternet5331
      @justsomeguyontheinternet5331 7 месяцев назад +4

      The UV9R also has the IP rating and the waterproof multi-pin connector, and is frequency unlocked. It's really the minimum goodness analog radio for "preppers" or "minutemen"

      @@justsomeguyontheinternet5331 agreed. The weatherproofing is a resilience that I think the UV-5R really lacks. But still has that affordability and availability, making it a good intro option.

    I pretty much already own all the things that you use in your videos, especially your survival videos, but you have taught me new ways to repurpose all of them.
    For example, for some reason I never thought to use Faraday bags to hide my cell phone if I ever want to avoid my location being pinged.
    But after realizing there's no one in my region worth talking to over ham radio, you have given me a new purpose for my Baofung radios and accessories.

    Just remember radios do not work against military combatants. They can use your radios to triangulate your position or even mimic your voice to a teammate. As for everyone else, a secure frequency is cool but there are even some HAM guys who can find those and listen in. Food for thought

    Question: If you are on "no cell phones," why would you use radios that your OPFOR would easily be able to triangulate or use RDF to pinpoint you with? Obviously cell phones wouldn't be able to be relied upon in a grid down scenario, but if you are involved in some kind of protracted struggle against an advanced adversary, riding around on an ATV in the dark and transmitting in the clear is the best way to get a Hellfire missile from a Reaper drone up your tailpipe.

    • @gator7082
      @gator7082 7 месяцев назад +12

      Used with short antennas on low power utilizing the appropriate frequency range for the terrain, radio discipline and a good comm plan solves that to some extent. SIGINT would have to actually be operating in your area and in range to pick you up.

    • @ron3365
      @ron3365 7 месяцев назад +5

      I can say that if it did come to what he is training for I do not think there will be any assets that can pick up vhf transmissions to be honest the would be listening to high band transmissions like UHF and satcom range of freqs! Pluse if you are not running radios that can be incripted then it really dosnt make a difference.

    I really like my Rugged RDX. For just over $200 you get a durable and waterproof radio that can use DMR. You can also get a commercial license that lets you and anyone you allow to use a given frequency however you please within a 20ish mile radius. Took around $500 to get the commercial license but split between us it wasn't too bad. Digital is also really nice since it's significantly harder for others to listen to you and you get your own frequency unless you leave your zone.

I have spent lots of time, research and money on my gear from my rifle, chest rigs, pistol belts, plate carriers, go bags, medical ect. Next step would be a helmet, ear pro and possibly night vision. Should I continue investing in my personal setup? Or should I stop where I'm at because no amount of gear and training is gonna make anyone into a 1 man army?

    Baofeng radios can be good, but they have a problem. They have very little, if any, input filtering. So if you live in an area with lots of interference, Baofengs are not a good choice. I'm a ham operator, and I have a Baofeng. I got it for Christmas. When I first tried it, I was visiting relatives in another city. It worked fine. When I got home, in an area with lots of military & defense activity, it was worthless.
